The ACC will delay the start of competition for all fall sports until at least Sept. 1

I agree. Speaking generally, SA's are in much more structured environments compared to general student body. They are accountable to their team & coaches.

As one anecdotal point... my sons are D3 athletes. They play a spring sport with about 35-40 players on the roster. Their coach carries a rather large stick (plenty of consequences for failing to follow team rules) to their carrot of enjoying the game they love & being part of the brotherhood of team. As they are returning to school over the next week or so, the coach has already established how fall practices will go (small 'pods' each led by a captain). As for their personal time, he's directed the captains to ensure no gathering will exceed 10-12 people. The coach will punish violators.

At first, I sort of laughed at notion he could pull off keeping these guys in line including their social lives. The team is tight and socialize in large groups often (pre covid). While it is the right thing to do, it seems like a big demand... & rather lofty expectation (to me)... .. but my sons seem to be totally onboard (one is a captain).

That kind of approach will be repeated across the country by NCAA coaches & teams. In some cases, jobs will be lost. There is no such oversight for the general student.
This is similar to the protocol for MLB, except for large group of non-athletes who will share classrooms and libraries and those 10-12 person gatherings. I hope it works.

There's one study on this I know of:

Descriptions of the study is often prefaced by "a small sample". This is misleading. First, the study is carefully controlled, with comparisons to age-matched and "risk factor-matched" groups that validated the main results. Second, the effects observed were substantial. A larger sample would almost certainly show similar results.

No doubt the same team is at work on a bigger study to take care of the results for different age/ethnic groups. That's what I'd do and that will take a bigger sample. The effects of this disease are still largely unknown, however; no need to take undue risks.
This is the study that he big 10 heavily relied on to decide to cancel/move the season. In this report the lowest age was 45 of the 100 patients with the median being 49. How they determined this report was relevant to their student athletes is beyond me.

Is there a valid reason to move the season/cancel? Maybe. Did they get scared into doing so by lawyers, liability etc. and cite this report prematurely? Probably.

Yep, and at the same time medical professionals are advocating to not play football, they are advocating for tens of thousands of college kids to return to campus. We’re close to starting challenge trials here in the US - that’s deliberately infecting people with COVID to see if a vaccine works. How can we say it’s okay to let sedentary middle aged regular people make decisions by their own free will to be infected but not super fit active healthy 20 year olds to live their life with manageable risks but at least try and not be infected?

Yes, the patients were mostly older (IQR 45 - 53), but the damage stats are enough to give anyone pause. When 78% of the subjects showed heart damage, especially when contrasted with the controls, you just about have to sit up and take notice. The usual assumption would be that anybody coming down with the disease, even if they were likely to recover, would be at severe risk for lasting heart damage. There's no reason to assume that young people would be exempt, unless they had very mild cases. And, btw, in this context, nobody knows what a "mild case" actually is.

I have no doubt that the commissioners were told that possible legal liabilities were looming from playing football. I'm pretty sure that the SEC,ACC, and Big-12 people were told the same thing. That's why they are waiting for a month or so to see if the dust settles. (Hint: it won't.) I continue to doubt that a football season is on tap for this year; even if it starts, it will almost certainly stop soon enough.

A side note: my wife has a client who is an inveterate opponent of mask wearing and spread this to his whole family. His daughter goes to Bammer. She lasted a week; both she and her also non-mask wearing roomie came down with the virus and went home. And - you guessed it - all but one member of both families, including children of all ages, now have the disease. This thing has an attack rate you would not believe, at least for those who won't take it seriously.

Yep (yep to every point). IIRC a study estimated COVIDs level of contagiousness at 5x the flu (and the flu is contagious).

If students were kept off campus, I’d say we have a 95% chance of playing fall sports. With them on campus, it feels like 25%. The news will bang every new case on campus over the head until it has CTE. Which as a reminder nobody cares about.

So many layers to this.

So Clay Travis thinks that the commissioner of the Big 10 actually thinks its perfectly safe to play and therefore is letting his son play yet made his own conference not play anyways, disappointing their pretty large fan bases and giving up hundreds of millions of dollars. Im just trying to comprehend how stupid you have to be think that is what is really going on and that is ignoring the fact that Warren's son is 22 years old and he can't actually stop him from doing anything. Also, has Travis given up on telling people that cases don't matter because deaths and hospitalizations aren't going up now that hospitalizations and deaths went up like everyone with half a brain knew they would?

One weird thing to me is why people here are so upset that the Big 10 and Pac 12 and other conferences decided to postpone their season. We aren't in those conferences. We weren't going to play anyone in those conferences. Why are so many people personally offended about safety decisions made by others that don't affect them at all?

I think it is the belief that both the Big 10 and Pac 12 will lobby to get the other conferences to cancel fall football as well and make them look bad. So yes while you are right it doesn't directly affect us because we are in the ACC and will play teams in our conference, it affects us if those other two conferences try to get us to cancel our fall seasons.

No, that’s not what is going on. And no, we are not upset that the Big Ten and the PAC 12 are not playing football. We are laughing at them. We are calling them dumb ****s.

Those stories above are more proof of what we have been saying here, which is that this decision that they made was based on liability and risk and money, and not about health and safety. The guy’s own son is playing somewhere else - how much more clear can it be to the world.

Michigan State had 200 new cases from a single party this summer - 0 even went to the hospital. Expect similar numbers from Notre Dame when the dust settles.

Sounds like you’re pretty obsessed with that dude Travis amirite?

But this beauty I cherry picked is actually the funny part as this is how the Swarm thinks about your views on pretty much everything 😂. There’s irony and then there’s IRONY 😂

It’s all love, Wreck. We love you regardless.

Yeah, that doesn't really pass the smell test. Even if you were making post after post after post after post supposedly mocking the Big 10 that would be a pretty big sign of insecurity but this is different. This isn't really mocking, it is some attempt to try to prove something. The best I can figure is that some here are afraid that the ACCs current decision is not really final and they could eventually come to the same conclusion, therefore you have a weird incessant need to post random things in an attempt to discredit the Big 10 and Pac 12s decisions. And good luck to you forcing your 22 year old adult child to do anything when that time comes.

One big advantage of the way the ACC is slow rolling the decision is the extra practice time. I don't think the conferences who have cancelled can practice.

Slow rolling the decision makes sense. I don't think we'll see college football this fall, but no reason to rush.

lol. The guy who got himself kicked off of a news show by telling the female host that he only believes in the first amendment and boobs? Yeah, very obsessed. Honestly I hadn't herd his name in a long while until you decided to post every one of his tweets and declare him some kind of public health expert.

This is all bull**** and doesn’t represent what’s been discussed on here. Not sure what your agenda is.
