The ACC will delay the start of competition for all fall sports until at least Sept. 1

I disagree that there should be dominant central control. A commissioner of football telling the Big 10 they must play, or telling the SEC that they cannot play even if they are willing to accept the risk isn't a good idea.

We don't know what different conferences have or have not been planning. I don't believe the narrative that the conferences are making hard plans and then scrambling to come up with a different plan only when that one isn't viable. The conferences have staffs of lawyers, business people, finance people, etc. They also have companies that they hire to assist with finance, business, marketing, operations, etc. They can work on multiple contingency plans and have plans, or at least plan ideas, ready in case things don't work out with Plan A. It is my assumption that the major conferences have been doing that. The smaller conferences probably can't spend too much money on such plans, but the P5 can.

I do think that there has been a very big attempt to keep football in the fall. I criticized the Big 10 and Pac 12 for announcing conference only a month ago. The criticism was because I didn't believe that plan was going to be the last modification. They can have a lot of contingency plans for: A 10 game schedule, an 8 game schedule, a regional schedule with 4 home-away games, a plan for substituting games if multiple teams can't play one weekend, a late fall schedule, a spring schedule, etc.: However, if they make a hard announcement and then have to backtrack from it, it makes them look like they don't have a clue what they are doing. I think that is what you are seeing. A backtrack from hard announcements instead of bumbling idiots.
Its a weakness with college football in general. Its a sport without any real leadership. Are the Presidents the leaders? The ADs? The coaches? Conference commissioners? The NCAA? No one knows and it changes from subject to subject. This leads to completely disjointed directions on anything significant. The Big Ten doesn't want to play but needs to feel out other conferences for PR reasons. Some conferences want to play 9 games, some 10, some 11, some 12. Some aren't going to play. Some are. Some are going to have fans, some aren't. Some have these testing protocols, some have completely different ones. There is a twitter movement advocating for both directions. The entire sport is a clown show right now.

I don't see that as a weakness. Should every single college campus look exactly the same? Should every single college football program have exactly the same traditions? Should every single college fight song be the same? Should Syracuse be restricted from selling alcohol at games? Should BYU be forced to sell alcohol at games? If not, then why should every single college football program and every single conference act exactly the same?

Should every single college football program and every single conference act exactly the same with regard to COVID-19? If so, then who do they follow? The most stringent and weary? The most unconcerned? Who makes that decision? Do you appoint a Czar and follow what he says even if you are scared out of your wits, or dumbfounded as to why you are being held back?

The United States is a country of individualists, not servants to a king.

Many have asked why the sudden change in stance on the part of the P5. This article explains a lot of it.

It freely admits that so far the percentages are low, but they are not zero.

" “That’s what has been the final straw,” says a team doctor at a prominent college football program. “The commissioners are finally figuring it all out. The commissioners are going, ‘Oh my gosh!’ And the doctors are like, ‘Yeah...’” "

Also, this article was interesting. While I can't say I agree with every take on the situation, and the writer seems to have an agenda, it hits at some real problems ADs will be facing in the coming weeks/months...

For gods sake man...stop with the fear porn. It doesn’t even make sense anymore.

Looks like there is a movement for a conference "breakaway" for some teams...at least for this year.

Scott Frost at Nebraska is hinting at it, Volunteers AD as well. Word is some B1G schools are in the process of working with other schools that are interested in it as well.

This is going to get VERY interesting soon.

Yep, let’s do it!!!

I now think of covid as a blood borne disease. Comes in through the airwsys, gets in the blood and then pillages different organs in different people. (Lung, heart, brain)

we just don't know enough to take unnecessary risks. Football is only entertainment for the fans. I'm ok with players playing with liberal opt out. But if I had to vote as a college President, I'd vote for no fall contact sports given the liability.

With conferences possibly dropping out and rumors of team breakaways from snowflake conferences we're going to need a weekly preseason Top25 from now on .

0.5 boy you really showed him 😂

I wasn't trying to "show" anyone. I was just pointing out a simple issue with comparative math. 1.5% is not "a lot higher" than 2%. In fact 1.5% is not higher that 2% at all. In primary school math, they would teach you that the alligator is eating the 2% of Alabama's team rather than the 1.5% of "society".

I guess that isn't included in the math they teach Alabama athletics.

With the Big 10 out, there probably is even less likely there will be a national championship game or bowls this year.
