The ACC will delay the start of competition for all fall sports until at least Sept. 1

We had 30,000 new cases a day even when we were shut down. It’s a novel virus. We are not going to shut down again, and even if we did, 30,000 new cases a day would still be too much for some people. With some people, there is no possible reasonable level of transmission that would make them feel safe. With some other people, there probably isn’t a number high enough to make them think twice. IIWII.

IIWII? We only shut down half way, is what it is.

Have fun watching European soccer this fall.

That’s your opinion. Not sure based on what. But like I said, we’re not shutting down again. And even if we did, that level of transmission would still be too high for some people. It’s too bad we have to go to the least common denominator and can’t just move forward with those who want to. So far, the people opting out aren’t demanding the league be shut down, which is as it should be.

Oh, and I’m not watching soccer LOL.

I didn't say anything about shutting down again. I said we only shut down half way and now we're paying the price.
I'm not watching soccer, either. LOL.

I think we’re paying the price for living in a country that always gives in to the least common denominator. My opinion is that there is in fact no number low enough that wouldn’t make many people act the way they are now. Even if we had some tiny fraction, like 10,000 new cases a day, I still think we’d be in the same place we are now. I don’t envy these Presidents of Universities or School District Presidents or anybody else - there isn’t an answer that will please everyone. The best answer is if you’re worried - don’t play, don’t attend games...whatever. But please don’t dictate something on everyone else because of your own preferences.

Tour de France starts in three weeks. While outside, there will be a lot of low level exposure in the peleton. Hope they can finish. At least the few Americans live in Europe so they should be good to go. :p:giggle:(y) We're all adapting.

ACC will slide football to the Spring soon in a really short season I'd guess.

The lasting effects of covid aren't well known. There months after "recovery " my daughter's 32 year old boyfriend still has trouble running a mile. There are CFIDS type symptoms even for those with little to no symptoms originally. Football players are hearing the anecdotes and justifiably concerned. I know I don't want to get it.

We never shut down anywhere close to what European countries did, this is a fact. And that's our prerogative. The problem with just letting people do what they want is if you have this level of community spread, there is zero way to ensure that cases won't reach high risk people. We can't police behavior to that extent. We need cases in the thousands per day, not tens of thousands. I am sure that is where ADs expected us to be by now.

It’s just too bad they did not shut down before the virus rained fireballs of hell down on top of them.

10,000 New cases a day nationally would average out to about 200 new cases a day per state. Based on what I’ve seen us already try, I just don’t see any way possible with the number of asymptomatic cases we have to ever get anywhere close to that.

so far, we have a couple months of teams practicing with a minuscule number of examples of negative health consequences. I would hope that athletic directors and university presidents look at that more than anything else, And at least move forward and give it a try. They can always cancel the season if things change in a bad way

That's the thing - the long term side effects, the totality of which are unknown but we have reason to believe are widespread and serious even in those to whom the disease isn't immediately debilitating. I guess you could say that's the "lowest common denominator".

One question I haven't seen asked is this - What happens if we start and then stop the season early in the fall? Will we have another season in the Spring, or not? I guess nobody knows.

I say maybe an even shorter, 8 game season in the spring if turnaround time is an issue.

As a current student taking my “victory lap” 5th year, I’d prefer to actually attend my last football season in the student section. I think spring is the best choice, maybe start in March once the vaccine has (hopefully) started to distribute around the general population

A certain segment of our population believe they always know what everyone else should do. I’m more worried about long term effects from having 2 cell phones stuck to my body for the past 15 years than I am about worries over COVID. It’s simple - if you are really worried then stay home and don’t play. No different than me preferring to take a back road than taking 285. In a free society you can do what you feel Is best for you. We are giving this virus way more respect than it deserves. When we get hit with a real pandemic and everyone blows it off because of our chicken little response today it will really be sad.

Tour de France, European soccer. Golf, baseball, hockey, and so on. Everybody is trying to move forward. Hopefully we put on our big boy pants and at least try to have football since we are months into this and see no reason not to yet.

Big 10 pushing for spring season. That is where we are likely headed folks, so make peace with it.
This seems to be right from everything I am reading today. The momentum is certainly swinging that way. Personally, I think I would prefer that as well. Trying to make this happen in the fall has been a bit of a mess.

Looks like it may be canceled all together now. Link above.

wow, has science all been thrown out the door or what? We’ve had months of football teams practicing with only a couple outlier negative results, all kinds of other sports leagues are operating, yet we’re just gonna throw up our hands and run for the doors. Sad.

Quick summary: The MAC conference has moved their season from Fall to Spring.
Backstory: The MAC pulls a substantial amount of its income from playing Power 5 schools. Only the Big12 and ACC allowed out of conference games for this season—the SEC, Big 10, and Pac 12 went conference-only. When even the ACC and Big12 dropped games, the MAC suffered even more. There’s more incentive for the MAC to move to Spring and hope for some in-person revenue than hold on for the Fall now that they’re lost most of their lifeline from the other conferences. This may be more of a split between the P5 “haves” and the G5 “have nots” than an omen for P5 teams.
However, the Big 10 was rumored to be considering a shift to a Spring season. I’d watch that more than what’s happening with the MAC
