The ACC will delay the start of competition for all fall sports until at least Sept. 1

ansas State athletic director Gene Taylor says the Big 12 is currently discussing seven primary options for the upcoming football season, and he outlined them during a conversation on Friday.

1. Starting the season as scheduled in early September

2. Starting the season in late September and ending games in December

3. Starting the season in October and playing a conference-only schedule

4. Starting the season in September and playing a conference-only schedule

5. Waiting until 2021 and starting the season in January

6. Waiting until 2021 and starting the season in March

7. Splitting up the season with six games in the fall and six games in the spring

Taylor thinks all seven options are on the table right now, but he is more optimistic about certain plans than others. He said starting the season on time “is going to be a long shot.” He isn’t sure why teams would start the season in September and scrub all non-nonconference games. There would be many moving parts involved with a split season. And he thinks the idea of beginning the season in January is particularly far-fetched.

“This is just me talking, but playing a full season starting in January and playing through March is a crazy plan,” Taylor said. “There are some parts of the country that I’m not sure I want to go to in January and February.”

But there is no perfect plan. At least not right now.

“Some say that we should start in March and end in May, which may be a little more palatable from a weather perspective,” Taylor said. “But how are you going to handle the draft? And then you’ve got players playing all the way through May and then they are going to come back in the fall. Some of those logistics are crazy to think about.”

“We are going to talk more about it next week,” Taylor said, “and hone in on the top three or four options that we really think are feasible.”

5, 6 and 7 are not feasible, i would not think. Would any of the first round draft picks play a winter/spring schedule?

If we have football this Fall, there will have to be changes in how the games are managed.

For games with fans:

Universities will have to have a non-refundable screening process at the gates for every fan that enters. This may also be required for entry into the the parking lots for tailgate parties. Needless to say, this will be expensive and very time consuming.

There have been discussions about having liability waiver statements signed by every person who enters the stadium.

There have also been discussions about waiver signing at the time of ticket purchase and having all pre-cleared tickets non-transferrable. ID required to enter with pre-cleared ticket.

State and local social distancing at the time of ticket purchase may be required for all advance sale tickets.

For games with or without fans:

Players will have to be tested and isolated before every game. This will probably require online classes for players in the Fall.

Coaches and university staff in contact with players just before and during the game or halftime will have to be tested and isolated before every game.

Game officials will have to be tested and isolated before every game. This will be an additional expense and may mean some game officials will not be able to participate.

Stadium staff and security people will have to be screened before the game and kept away from players, coaches, etc who had been isolated.

Questions that must be answered:

What happens if a player, coach, or game official has covid-19 symptoms during the game?

If a player fails covid test, is he the only team member banned from playing? For how many games?

How will financial guarantees for OOC games be handled if attendance limitations are enforced?

How will in-game ad revenue be impacted if attendance limitations are enforced.

These are just a few of the issues that came up when I discussed this with a former university administrator.

I think #7 is what would have to happen if we get a second wave in late fall/winter. Maybe we can get the season finished before that but idk

Interesting take from the former administrator, however most of these are completely unworkable IMO. First to have football we have to have students on campus, and once they are there, the college is going to have to change the way it treats covid positive patients. You can't start quaranting the students as soon as you get a positive test as that would mean you would effectively be shutting down the college again as we know the students are not going to follow social distancing guidelines and the virus probably has already spread. I think the college needs to treat it like the flu, as we know that young people are not really affected by the virus as seen by the low numbers of hospitalizations and deaths. The most severe cases should go to the doctor or hospital. In effect this would allow herd immunity to work its way through the campus. You are going to have to allow the players to play with the virus because if one player on the team has it, most of the team probably does too.

I agree with the waiver for fans as we know some lawyer is going to want to sue the first AA that allows a positive person into the stadium, however I don't see how you can possibly screen every fan going in the gates.

Read an article today that said uga is looking at limiting how many people attend possible games this fall. If GT were to limit capacity, I wonder how they would determine who gets to attend. It would seem that SThs should get priority, but many of our tickets are in blocks right next to other STHs. It's likely the GTAA would have to do a LOT of rearranging to make it all work.

I'm pretty sure they will call me so I can advise them. I know in the past when I recommended something they did the opposite.

The big money is going to win out. Many people think this is all about public safety. Nothing could be farther from the truth. At the end of the day the big donations stop and endowments/grants stop being funded, big name coaches and their staffs have no paycheck, large construction projects grind to a halt, people who are basically unemployable outside a university setting have no livelihood, then there’s the text books, the school trademark clothing & novelty purchases, the vacant dorm rooms & no need for cafeteria services or people to park in the overpriced parking garage or stay in the overpriced hotels. The ticket scalpers are out of money & so are the cops on OT directing traffic. Add to that the tv money being bypassed, ticket sales, concessions, etc. There’s even a section of students that won’t go to Bammer because who wants to pay out of $30k state tuition/fees, etc to attend the business school with no party scene. You might as well save your money and take online classes. The list goes on. There’s a lot of skin in the game here.

Literally it’s where capitalism and socialism intersect & for that reason we will have a college football season unless the entire country is on lockdown which is not happening. Sports is one of the rare items and college sports a rarer subsection of sports in general that cuts across politics, race, age and gender.

We may not see GT play Gardner Webb or UCF this season, but we’ll figure out how to play the other 10 & there will be a bowl season/ college football playoffs.

Did you get the email from Tech about changing seats for the ND game? I am happy with what they initially gave me, but it might be a good deal for some. However, I still have my doubts as to whether that game, or others, will even be played.

I told them I'd like to change my seats and play them at Bobby Dodd Stadium, they hung up.

Swofford, Bowlsby and Aresco all said that if a majority of their conference schools can play, they believe their respective conferences would play football this fall.

“I suspect if the majority of schools can play, then they should play,” said Swofford of the ACC. “It’s on our radar. We’ll cross that bridge later. Hopefully we won’t be in that situation.”
