They’re averaging 30+ points per game. That’s all anyone sees
What metrics does DFEI include? I assume it is a composite of descriptive stats. I’d like to see what it is and how it’s validated. It doesn’t seem to be very accurate from some of the posts you’ve made.

I wouldn't call going from DC to analyst or recruiting specialist failing up. I'm one who has defended Roof in the past but do not want him back as a DC or on field coach. I do think there is potential value in him as a recruiter for GT.

I hear you. I was using a 4D conceptualization of 'failing up'. As in, I'm sure there's a young coach that could envision a behind the scenes coaching role as a positive step in his career. But filling it with a has-been negates the opportunity and may not be the actual best move.

So,although a move to analyst wouldn't be an upward move for a retired DC, it could be that for someone.

Clear (as mud)?

DFEI is the FEI stats just for the plays your team is on defense. Here’s the overall:

Fremeau Efficiency Index

Brian Fremeau uses points per possession to evaluate teams in football. It starts by comparing the points earned on a drive with the expected number of points based on starting field position.

Accounting for starting field position is important. For example, if the offense gets the ball only a yard from the end zone, they should not get full credit for scoring the touchdown. Instead, the offense get 7 minus the expected 6.4 points teams usually score from the opponent’s one yard line.

Good read at https://thepowerrank.com/guide-cfb-rankings/

Ken Massey aggregates 61 models here, which sum up to US being 51st. https://masseyratings.com/ranks

That is very true. Against Iowa State (maybe Indiana State?), UCF got two pick sixes and still lost the game. We like to complain about tackling...go watch UCF; we are great in comparison! It does not help that UCF's offense stinks....on their 4th QB of the year.

Our defense probably suffers when we go 3-and-out, or when they start on our side of the field. It’s worth keeping that in mind. Points per possession is probably a better view of defense than total points allowed

FEI Defense Ratings (DFEI) are opponent-adjusted possession efficiency data representing the scoring advantage per non-garbage possession a defense would expect to have on a neutral field against an average opponent offense. The relative strength of opponent offenses faced (OOA) is the difference between DFEI and unadjusted defensive possession efficiency (DVE). Opponent offensive points per drive (DPD), available yards percentage (DAY), yards per play (DPP), and the percentages of opponent offensive drives that ended in a touchdown or field goal attempt (DSR), drives that ended in a touchdown (DTD), drives that earned at least 10 yards (DFD), and busted drives that were held to zero or fewer yards (DBD) are calculated from the results of non-garbage, regulation drives in FBS vs FBS games.

If it makes you feel any better, UCF is ranked 99th before taking opponent offense strength into account. I won’t attest to the strength scaling, but the raw DVE seems pretty accurate.

I'll give him this, he can recruit. Wonder how he would do coaching special teams?
No need.

Roof can actually be a Huge asset as a Defensive Analyst for us. He does know run defense his issue has always been the back end and he is a smart defensive mind even if his on field calling has faltered lately. I mean **** we should have CPJ on the payroll as an analyst if he wants to do it from his couch in Arizona.

Thanks! I’d like to see the validity test data on it, maybe Cronbach’s alpha or whatever they use. With that many factors, I’d also like to see a factor analysis, and maybe the VIF and a vanishing tetrad. I’m not saying it’s not valid, just that I’d like to see that data.

I'm not going to pretend to know any of what you're talking about.

Ted is a great man, a great Tech man. Yeah, his coaching has not won any awards, but as a human being, he is first class. I am sure he has done well financially and could ride off into the sunset without any concerns. Perhaps he will.

Go Jackets!

Ted plays a very pro style Cover 3 /cover 4 scheme. Keep it in front of you blitz int he red zone force turnovers or fieldgoals. Its basically the same defensive mindset the NFL has used for 20 years. The issue is unlike the NFL which cannot run a lot o the risky stuff that beats this type of stuff the college game can. THis may actually start to change with NIL. A 1 million dollar a year QB like Ewers for instance can't be in a Zone read scheme and risk injury its to expensive. Over the next 10 years if it stays liek ti is the QB run offenses are going to go away for the most part from probably the top 60 schools. Pretty much everyone is going to run a variation of the chief's offense. This is also going to be necessary because the transfer portal will mean that what's changing is terminology not what you are doing.
I hate it but it very much is what is going to happen. Ironically CFB is going to probably shift back towards power running if you don't have an all world field general. The Fullback will probably make a comeback. In doing so the defenses will shift to more LB's on the field then you'll see people start incorporating options, and finally we will start spreading things out. A cycle if you will.
