On January 10, 2012, Roof was hired by new head coach Bill O'Brien as defensive coordinator at Penn State. Due to the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal, on July 24, 2012, the NCAA sanctioned Penn State with a four-year postseason ban, loss of 40 scholarships over a four-year period and allowed players to transfer without having to sit out a year. Despite the difficult conditions of the program, Roof led the defense to rank 2nd in the Big Ten Conference in scoring defense, led the league in sacks, ranked 1st in red-zone defense and 3rd in turnover margin. Nationally, Penn State ranked tied for first in red-zone defense, 15th in sacks,[16] 16th in scoring defense,[17]23rd in rushing defense, 28th in pass efficiency defense and 29th in total defense.

After Ted left for GT John butler took over and the defense was terrible. I will admit I’m very biased towards Ted but I honestly believe if he’s got the players there’s not many better.

He's football lifer - he's got a lot of respect in coaching circles. He hasn't had any sustained success as a DC, but that doesn't mean he's hot garbage. I would be very surprised if he doesn't end up somewhere as a position coach or analyst.

Roof’s ability to keep getting DC jobs is also a testament to how small the P4 coaching community is. Many of the coaches know each other from shared tenures at prior schools. Ted seems like a good all-around guy, good recruiter, and hasn’t done anything to tarrnish a school’s reputation. Probably not hard to get a few of your contacts from previous jobs to recommend or vouch for you.

Penn State’s defense is always very good. Heck with their talent you could coach a good Penn State defense

It’s amazing how good coaches do when they have good football players. Give coaches like Jimbo Fisher and Gene Chizik stud QB’s and them 2 dudes can win a NC. Ted Roofs coaching style does fit right in with the talent Penn St gets on defense stinger78 is right on the money.

I mean Ted's got an NC at auburn because he was the DC in 2010 and he is the one that held oregon and chip kelly to 19 points.

The reality is you go into the stadium with the players you have, not the ones you hope to have. I’d rate Ted a C+.

The US did deploy in 2010 13 M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks to the Kandahar and Helmand provinces in southwest Afghanistan, operated by a Marine tank company of the US 1st Marine Division (forward). Those Abrams were typically used for road clearing and patrolling. One was disabled by an IED and the remaining 12 were returned to the United States in 2013. Most of the Afghan terrain was too mountainous for field battle tanks to be operationally effective. More effective were MRAP's, armored personnel carriers, and up-armored HMVEE's. The Afghan army did not have Abrams tanks.

my first duty station was at Ft. Carson w/ 3rd ACR when Col. H.R. McMaster was the Regimental Col. I was just an aviation guy in 4th squadron at the time.

Yeah, we know how awesome LB he was. Dude had like 30 tackles one game.

You are not kidding. I was at a Tech- Clemson game at Grant Field. Clemson ran a quick toss to tailback Stacey Driver with a fullback in front of him. Roof hit him low and Stacey as a good back should twisted around to try and escape and damn if Jim Anderson did not pop him from one side and Pat Swilling from the other. I though they would have to amputate him to save his life but he popped back up and staggered to the sideline. The hitting on those teams was something to behold.

yup, Ted was great GT LB. But most will only remember him as a so-so coach.
Ask any UGa fan, who was 1976 SEC Player of the Year….????
