Here some other info on some of my wife and I's favorite spots for anyone interested. Meant to do it earlier but ran out of time. It's pretty downtown focused since that's where we live and it's the area closest to the stadium but there are a lot of good options around town outside of this list. Especially when it comes to food. Happy to share more!

Food
  • East West - Great Asian fusion
  • Paramount - Closest thing downtown to a sports bar. Solid food and an arcade. The Three Hander is one of the best sandwiches in the city
  • Yo Mama's - Great soul food
  • Pizza Grace - Upscale pizza but incredible. Can't go wrong with their pepperoni
  • Cafe Dupont - This is a legit fine dining spot is are not cheap but I've never had a bad experience here.
  • Gus' Hot Dogs - An institution. Absolute dive but the food is great.
  • Eugene's Chicken - Honestly the only spot I would bother with in the Uptown area right next to the stadium. It's great but it's small and will probably get slammed around game time. It always does when there's an event over there.
Drinks
  • Adios - A tequila bar and probably my favorite bar in the area right now. Has a 'club' vibe if theres a DJ but more laid back when not. Also sometimes have a Filipino food pop up out front.
  • House of Found Objects - A bar that would I describe as 'aggresively arty.' It really goes for its vibe and it's cool but it might not be for everyone. Really good cocktails.
  • Juniper - Gin based drinks in a really beauitul space
  • Mom's Basement - technically might not be in Avondale but kind of a 'fake' dive bar but it has a cool vibe and is a really popular late night spot with pool and darts. Gets a little overrun late night with the early 20s crowd. Could be a pro or a con depending on what you're looking for.
  • Breweries - most of them are solid. The consensus is that Back 40 has the best food.
  • Saturn & Satellite - might be my favorite place in the whole city. Cool bar with a space age vibe with retro video games and board games. Also a music venue that puts on great shows and events.
  • Garage Cafe - Really laid back dive bar with great sandwiches and a sick patio with eclectic decorations
Coffee/Sweet Treats
  • June Coffee - our go to coffee spot but can get stupid crowded. Cala coffee a few blocks away is a good back up plan
  • Last Call Baking - local favorite but they often sell out so you gotta get there early
  • La Fresca - best tiramisu I've ever had
  • Canella Gelato - locally owned gelato spot
  • Alabama Peanut Company - not a sweet treat but incredible boiled peanuts with multiple daily flavors. definitely recommend you check it out
Sights
  • Birmingham Museum of Art - Free Museum
  • Sidewalk - Local Indie theater with a bar and cool vibe
  • Botanical Gardens - not sure how nice it is in December but it's also free
  • Birmingham Civil Rights Institute - very powerful museum

I hope we play with intensity tomorrow. We made an impact nationally this year with the widely watched FSU, Miami, and Georgia games. We need to get a win to remain a team on the rise and carry our positive look into next year's preseason. plus I'd like to see us get 8 wins.

Two final things from me:

One be very careful parking in the paid lots downtown. They're monitored by a predatory towing company everyone here absolutely ****ing hates. If you put a single piece of information wrong in the machine (like a license plate or spot number typo) they will absolutely tow your *** the second you walk away from your car. The city has started to come down on them and it's gotten better but they're still around so make sure you read the signs.

The other thing is that you'll hear a lot about how 'dangerous' Birmingham is from people who don't actually live in the city. If you hear this don't take it too seriously. There are definitely sketchy areas but where the game is and where y'all will most likely be spending time are not sketchy.

Vandy is no slouch. Alabama can attest to what happens when you overlook them.

About to reach Birmingham. First bowl game for me since the 2008 peach bowl
Same for me. Hope we're bad luck!

Things have changed from the "First 48" days.

Good AJC article on Coach Key and his ties to Birmingham. Quote below from Jack Wood, his high school Coach.

“Brent always, No. 1, he always worked extremely hard. That’s probably one thing that sticks out to me as much as anything,” Wood told the AJC. “He worked in the offseason, in the weight room, the running program. Everything he did he got better and better. And he worked real hard in the classroom. He was a very good student, and that’s the most important thing there. He was a good teammate. I think that’s how the other guys there viewed him, and that’s the ultimate to me.”

Like Bama found out, the only possible outcome playing Vandy is shame. You get nothing for winning, smeared if you lose.
False. We get a golden cowbell for beating Vandy.

(Along with our first 8-win season since 2016. This is a big deal)

Birmingham forecast. Protective stadium allows collapsible umbrellas that will fit under seat, but not the ones with a long handle. But, the reality of 30 knot wind makes an umbrella pretty much useless. A poncho might be your best option.

Today...Cloudy. A chance of showers this morning, then showers with a slight chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. Patchy fog this afternoon. Not as cool with highs in the lower 60s. Southeast winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Chance of rain 90 percent.

We should lose so then we get the glory of winning it back or something
No the point is we’ve really got no choice but to beat them pretty badly. Outside of one of the “not really” 1a teams like Toledo, we probably drew the worst opponent. Only upside we have is the 8th win, the downside is all pretty down should we lay an egg today. It’s Vandy, doormat of the sec.

This is Vandy on NIL. The one who beat Bama and VPI, who played Mizzou, UTA, and LSU to one score, and… who lost to GA State. This is not your daddy’s Vandy. Better be ready to play today.
