Spring Practice

I think it is fair to say that as a consequence of the offense we ran, and the practice time demanded to get it right, the defense was prevented from getting the kind of looks they needed to be most successful. The line of distinction for me in this whole discussion has been that CPJ clearly did not intend to hurt the defense, but likely did as a consequence of his management of practice time. Additionally, I wouldn't be surprised to hear there were guys he kept on the O who might have believed they could have helped our team (or had more snaps) by being on the D side of the ball. I just don't see him holding kids he thought could help the team more by being on the D.

I don't, for a moment, believe he ever intentionally instructed the D Staff to do anything other than what he believed we needed to win. I can't know all the information he had at any given point when he may have limited installs, pushed for slow and steady bleeding against quick hit gamble defense or whatever else. I can; however, guarantee he did everything he could to win.

That said, I think there is a balance with any team. My suspicion is that CGC uses his organized chaos concepts of running tons of extra snaps to mitigate the idea that a Defense needs to see X play from the Offense and the Offense might need to see Y play from the defense and you can't always say that X = Y. That said, all actions have consequences and one could argue that the use of the throw as many snaps as we can at the kids will prevent them from being able ot get as hands-on teaching opportunities as a more steady pace at practice might afford.

The proof will be in the pudding for this staff over the coming months, but I am liking what we have seen so far (from coaches, players and all the commentary from past players / connected friends of the program.

I am excited for the spring game, to see the guys switching roles and schemes being installed, and look forward to the coming season as well.
Eggsackley.

Yes. Woody didn't have the time to put in what was actually a very complex D. And the players were not what he wanted either. But we all knew that and it was widely discussed before last season. Now, all of a sudden, these factors don't seem to make much difference to some here.

I suspect that we'll have some D problems this year too. I think that we'll at least equal last year's takeaway and negative play figures. Unfortunately, I don't expect us to be much better in terms of total yards allowed and <your favorite D stat here>. That should improve if our D recruiting - it's been pretty good lately - keeps up and the D matures in the new schemes. Coach being a D specialist should help.

But remember what the Feldmarshal said:

"No battle plan survives contact with the enemy."
- von Moltke

We need to be ready to be patient.

I think it's possible that Woody's defense could be implemented much faster and with the players he had instead of wanted. That's not to say he did a bad job or isn't a good coach, and of course for the reasons elucidated here he may have been restricted in doing all he wanted. So while I agree with you, I think it is also possible that CGC and Thacker get more accomplished in less time, and we have some good comments that this may be happening. Or it might be hubris.

I think pretty much everyone is ready to be patient except for the CPJ-obsessed posters who think the D needs to prove something the very first game against the defending national champs.
No need to go there. I don't think patience will be tested with a loss to Clemson. Patience will be tested when/if we struggle against teams we think we should beat. See the USF and Pitt games last year. We've got areas of concern on both sides of the ball. I'm hopeful and optimistic, but also ready to be patient.

I’m not sure why people thinks it’s silly for CPJ to try to cover his *** in the media why preaching something different to his staff

Because it’s dishonest and very unfair to his staff. Which is contrary to the perception many have of him. Perceptions being what they are it’s impossible for outsiders to know. If true that truth will come out more as time progresses.

No. It’s Duke. Duke is the program the majority seem to use when measuring Tech. Regardless of success vs other teams on the schedule.

I think we see what you're trying to do but that's just not fair, or accurate. We have former players right here that have SAID Paul wouldn't let the DC be aggressive as he'd like. We've had Wes Friggin Durham speak on it on his radio show within the past 6 months; he flat out said Woody wasn't the only one that couldn't unleash the dogs all the way like he wanted either. He said the "guys before him" dealt with the same thing.

Now you can choose to believe these statements or not. I don't know why you wouldn't, hell some of it is coming from a PLAYER that played D under the man. There's no conspiracy here AE, I don't think there is anyways.

But for you to basically get mad because you don't believe it and draw this weird line in the sand about "If you don't agree then you're calling Paul Johnson a stupid idiot and a LIAR to boot" is a little nutty. Lol that's a little ridiculous wouldn't you say?
Look out ae 87 makes money arguing.

Your handle is named after beer??

Lol. Actually it's everybody on the schedule except Clemson and dare I say ugag. Lose 2 or 3 in a row to the others and even if Nick Saban is the coach, the sky is falling and all hope is lost. Btw, you misspelled Puke. twice.

Oh goodness Football Jesus retired oh what we gone do with no triple option to lean on. The program won’t survive. Don’t leave CPJ. Make love to me.

And how many times have you asked for no more (pro) CPJ talk or liked such posts? CPJ haters still propagating the CPJ talk. Y’all should live CGC more and focus talk on him. ;)

He has said - we' ve been getting boat raced.
That's progress.

Reality of the first 3 quarters of last 3 years against Clemson and uga is tough to accept.

It’s almost certain to occur again this year vs Clem...very probable vs mutts. Anyone that thinks our talent is on par with them is just plain wrong.

I’m worried our OL will be a complete disaster with the moves of Lee and Morgan to DL. I’m not against the moves as I think they might be best for the individual players. The unit may take a big hit from it though.

I’ve posted numerous articles on the program in this thread alone. Please.

I hope Coach Pat will be creative with his offense. Temple’s offense was pretty stale to me.

@Techster you have that link to watch his offense at Coastal Carolina.

Yeah I'm worried about offense. I hate the shotgun spread garb that 95% of the nation runs.

I like I-form jumbo under center, weak and strong formations. Fullback on the field at all times along with one tight end and a lot of times two tight ends. I'm old school. Passing downs get in the gun with 3 wide and a TE or just go 4 wide. Pretty much Stanford style is what I love.
