WHile I wouldn't argue against the findings of that article, we must recognize that Sagarin rankings don't mean much without more data. It is one of my favorite poll devices, but only after about 2/3 of the way through the schedule and on. I guess all polls are garbage before the first half is over anyway.

No arguments. Sagarin clearly becomes more accurate with more games / more objective data. Early in the season, I don't know what he uses to supplement that (maybe national rankings, last year, recruiting rankings?).

That said, once a trend establishes itself (even an early one, like week 4), it usually holds up for the most part. I'd bet that the top 25 in Sagarin as of today will be 75% the same by season's end, but maybe not in the same order.

Yesterday was a glorious CFB day. First time I can remember really rooting for Fluke.

An update from below on 6 Sept, JHowell has the SEC Power Ranking improving to .676 (a .007 increase) as of yesterday's games due to their OOC games. The ACC has climbed to .627 (a .015 increase) and is now the #3 conference. http://www.jhowell.net/cf/cf2016.htm

GT is at #38 up from #46.

So what we'll see over the years is conferences going up or down depending how they do OOC. Really no other way to do it. By the end of the season, it won't matter much as that year's W/L and SOS will determine who goes to the final four (hopefully 16 soon).

OK, there is bias in these numbers below since they incorporate last year's results too. But not counting last night, JHowell has SEC #1 at Power Ranking of .669 and ACC #4 at .612. {Bottom of http://www.jhowell.net/cf/cf2016.htm .... it'll be interesting to see how the one game last night changes things. Shouldn't be much since both were highly ranked and the higher ranked home team won.}

But that is a decrease in one week of .009 for the SEC and an increase of .006 for ACC. Bottom line is that when you win tougher games OOC, the conference gets better, when you lose the conference goes down. Playing cupcakes hurts. So just win baby.

BTW, to add fuel to my argument, the SEC, despite their average resume, came into the week with the highest ranked 0-loss team, the second highest ranked 1-loss team, and the highest ranked 2-loss team. Give me a break! Let's see where things fall tonight when the new polls come out.

He is if you sort out the guys who coached like 20 games or less. There are a few early 1900s guys that would be ahead of him that did like 8 games but yea he had a 77.8% win rate which is ahead of Saban's 75.0% win rate at LSU
