For the younger guys, an 18 year old can be dominant against 15-18 year olds in high school, but likely many will not have near the same success against college kids who average 21+ years of age with 3 + years in college baseball under there belts. I agree with the comment above about the set up strategy being crucial for success. Obviously easier said than done but it makes sense. Also if you followed any of our guys in high school you will notice the pitch selection that made them successful is not the same selection they are being asked to throw in college. Learning new pitches takes time. Again, maybe this is great for college/MLB development, but unfortunately we don’t have a minor league system in college to take those beatings.

The recruiters are beholding to these organizations more so than you realize. They direct kids to certain schools. They tell xyz school " I'll send you Johnny but you'll have to take Joe too ". And these types of deals are hard to break once you go down that road. I played baseball at GT and won 2 acc titles. I sent a recruit to Tech a few years back and he won an acc title. That's 3 of the 9 titles Tech has in their history. From my perspective, I don't like what Tech has become. Russ Chandler is one of the most beautiful ballparks in the country with the latest technology and yet we can't fill it up ? People want to see teams that play unselfishly and for each other with passion.

You need contrast in pitching styles to accomplish this effectively. In today's world hitters train to hit velo and have lots of problems adjusting. This type of pitcher would set up your 92-94 RHP to be very successful in the next start. Most prospective Pitchers are identified early on by velo only. They are ranked higher as a result of arm strength not pitchability. I've personally seen 3 Tech pitching recruits in the past couple of years and they all had common traits. They all threw hard 92-94mph but with very little command of the fastball and no ability to throw offspeed for consistent strikes and certainly lacked the ability to throw the offspeed when behind in the count. These type of recruits are dangerous because they often arrive on campus injured and can't help your team or they can't unlearn how they've always pitched and have very unsuccessful Tech baseball careers. BTW I'm not a fan of the shift in baseball. Nothing more deflating for your pitcher than a routine ground ball getting thru because of a shift.

I forgot to add one more thing that my son-in-law said to me about his baseball recruiting efforts in general:

“I’m forced to recruit the leftovers.”

In other words: he’s a Division III baseball coach. LOL

Not entirely related to this discussion, but your comment made me think of this.

My son is just an average kid in the local park league. However, his team's best pitcher certainly seems like he could be special. Mom played college softball, dad played college baseball. The ball just sounds different when his pitches hit the catcher's mitt. Good control, nice movement. He pitches on our team as well as 2 different travel teams. Now suddenly his arm is hurting and parents are taking him to a specialist out of the area.

Oh, and he's in 3rd grade.

Isn't a pitching staff rated 230 out of 295 appropriate "cause"? Isn't 18 walks in a single game appropriate "cause"? If we can fire a head football coach mid-season, we can sure as hell fire a pitching coach mid-season. In my opinion...our pitching coach is good at getting folks to throw hard with high spin; but lacks skill at teaching folks how to throw strikes, change speeds and actually get people out. I also wonder how much attention (any?) is being paid to the mental aspect to pitching?

Clearly, esp with hindsight, it should have been done. Even in the 'moment' it had merit based on results. Sometimes the resume just doesn't pan out the way you think it will (see Groh, Al).

Regardless of what happens with CDH, I expect Borrell to be given his walking papers this offseason barring some miraculous pitching upswing.

Comparing us to MSU doesn't make sense. Baseball matters a lot at MSU; in 2022 they were third in attendance at 10,289 average attendance. We were at 1506 average. http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/baseball_RB/2023/attend.pdf

That's why we have the talent coming in without commensurate results being tolerated.

I just changed my vote to Baseball Doesn't Matter at GT.

I mean I sadly don’t think you’re wrong with what leadership has shown us this last decade+. See if Batt/Cabrera wanna make it matter again this offseason. We’ve been in Danny-cruising-leave-when-he-wants mode for way too long.

If CDH doesn’t retire or take a Coach Cremins type of buy-out, will he can our pitching coach? Tech has given up 50 hits more than any of the other ACC teams.
