which means he's like almost every other recruit of the past 11 years lol!

I always thought from day one, CPJs strategy of focusing on Ga was a bit misguided.....and it sort of showed. I like the concept of Tech being unique.....and I think it is far more respected outside the SE than in it. Would love to see a strategy of hiting the Catholic and private schools both in the Northeast and Midwest. Cinncinati has a strong network of Catholic H.S. that have always been huge in football.....also that stretch from Pittsburgh to Cleveland. The appeal of warmer weather this time of year should be enough. (-6 in Detroit right now)
I grew up in Western PA. High School sports is all they have....(they even have a website solely for discussing h.s. sports in the county). We played one game in a 5k seat stadium and there were about 9k people there....used to get escorted out of town by the state police after 'away' win.
I also remember the audible "wows" in class when I announced I was going to Tech......people knew it was a big deal......if only I had weighed another 30 lbs, I might have been a player. ;)
These types of kids are out there...and many will likely not have a problem going that far out of state. Kids in private schools, where tuition runs from 15-35k a year, have likely traveled a bit as well....so being in a new city/ state is not going to be overwhelming.

I was there in 68 after riots when tech men came together to help build a park in the lightning district. To me this is a positive statement ( yes, I know, if followed by additional good works) . Tech is a part of ATL. Cgc is doing the foundational things for bring ATL into ga tech.

I am starting to see the power of the retweet in recruiting.

Gt football has great respect in texas as an academic institute doing football the right way. But even in the recruits that can make it, the fear that it's too hard. The fact that we have academic help for all students and 85% plus football players graduate needs to go out first . Via social media this can be targeted to high academic and high athletic at minimal expense.

It was a little before I got to Tech, but one of my favorite pictures is Maynard Jackson at the groundbreaking of the underground monorail. Some undergrads put out a press release as a lark, and he thought it was great and ran with it.

Your story has the advantage of being real (the monorail was a joke) and compassionate.

The city of Atlanta is happy to join in with Tech and help us make a splash. We just get tunnel vision and don’t find the time to go out of our campus confines.

Maybe. Or maybe you need do think a bit more about how you say things. I believe that you didn’t intend to insult the recruit but the implication of what you said was that we shouldn’t be excited/impressed with landing him.

Your hypocrisy on display again. Quit pissin on our current players. Whether it was CPJ before or CGC now I’m happy to have any recruits our staff believes in, and to hell with Rivals and 247 etc.

Ah, OK. So when @Animal02 makes fun of a current GT recruit by downplaying his talent with a comment like "dancing in the streets for a recruit we won over Rutgers and Coastal Carolina" it's OK but when anything from the previous coach is mentioned, it's bad.

Got it - thanks! It's hard to keep these agendas straight.

Top 30 consistently is certainly obtainable. We were about one blue chip player away from achieving it under Paul Johnson in 2017. Rivals has been using the same formula to calculate their rankings for the last 6 years and from that we can calculate the general cutoffs. In short, the scale ranges from 5.2 to 6.1, with the divisions being 2* (5.2-5.4), 3* (5.5-5.7), 4* (5.8-6.0), and 5* (6.1). Each rating grants a player a particular point value with additional points granted for being in the top 250 ranked players (more points for higher rank).

On average, the 30th ranked class has had a Rivals score of 1661 points over the last 6 years. That indicates that your top 20 recruits (the only ones used in the calculation) need to bring in an average value of 83 points per player, which means a relatively even balance between 5.6 (75 points) and 5.7 (90 points) players. Side note: this also means you could technically have a top 30 class consisting entirely of 3* recruits. However, the classes in the 30-26 range average 4.5 four star players, which Paul Johnson was hovering just below in 2017 and 2018. Assuming we get just 1 or 2 more four star players each year (anyone over 5.9 rating is gravy) coupled with a handful 5.7 rated players, we should be able to consistently be top 30.

Top 20 is a fair bit more difficult, but still possible. The 20th ranked class averages around 1894 points, which is an average per player value of 94.7 points and an average of 8.3 four star players. For reference, if you recalculate the 2007 class with the current formula, they had a total of 1886 points. That would mean that recruiting in the Top 20 each year would require us to perform at our historical best each season. While it seems unlikely, I am willing to give the ACC's supposed "second best recruiting infrastructure" a chance to exceed expectations. The way I figure it, we only need to be Top 30 anyway to be able to compete with most teams.
Great post Cam. Thanks for all the work. I love data to make conclusions from CGC needs to do just a little bit better to get to the top 30. And the cupboard is not bare

I agree, Animal. In general, there are places in the U.S. (and the rest of the world) where students are much more likely to be prepared (and appreciate) a top notch STEM degree, and the SE (again, in general) is not that place. FYI - I am from the NW GA and my kids (both 35 ACTers with one a 2400 SATer) went to school in Bammer, so I am speaking out of some knowledge. I am sure there are pockets of schools in GA, AL, etc., where the science and math education is pushed hard and made to seem important even on great athletes, but I believe this would be the EXCEPTION to the rule.

There have to be more "Derrick Morgans" out there somewhere - we have to find them.
Agree with both of you in spades. Just takes more recruiting staff and travel dollars to be effective. Hopefully CGC has enough to do it well.

That's exactly how I read it too. But that's how all his posts towards our new HC read: Rainy Day Eeyore-type stuff.

If we just muzzle the "negative nellies", everything will be peachy keen. :) A lot of GT grads have more "critical" personalities, so my guess is that it will be impossible to muzzle that wing of the party, of which, I am an outstanding member. :)

I really wish there was a correlation to "positive thinking" of alumni and better recruiting/performance. I have never seen one in college football

What many would call eeyore-type behavior is really based on experiential learning. I will admit, however, that sometimes someone can change the paradigm, and I am hoping for CGC to be that guy.

I have a college basketball magazine for '18 that names ATL the #ONE city area in the COUNTRY for bball hi school recruiting. (er, Pastner has ONE guy committed now -from fla.) hmmm
