Quayshawn was a really, really good linebacker for us, majorly underappreciated in my opinion. Probably the last really good one we’ve had here. We don’t need to recruit all pros at lb, but we need guys like him.

Belichek and the Patriots don't hand out that kind of contract unless they're confident a player will be cornerstone piece of their franchise. They've let MANY productive players go over the years because they felt like they could draft cheaper guys to replace them. That graphic certainly illustrates why the Patriots didn't go the draft route and instead gave Mason a huge contract.
