I think if Alabama ran the wishbone, TO, single wing or veer today, they would still win. They could probably pull off doing the old GT play where the quarterback takes the snap while facing backwards from the center.
Yeah, and that's why the swipe the UGAg DB took about their scout team running our offense better may not be far off. But those guys wouldn't be at Bama if they ran the wishbone today. Show me a QB at Tech in the option era that could make that pass Hurts did on the last TD. Yeah, wait for that.

I think it's more Billy Beane like. "We are card-counters at the blackjack table … We’re going to turn the odds on the casino."
Yeah, and that gimmick stuff flattened out with the As eventually. Just like Urban Meyer and others did a better job co-opting elements of the option, the Red Sox pilfered the best of Beane's ideas AND backed them up with money. Bad comparison.

True, but the last time before CPJ that we were ranked at the end of a season was under O'Leary. He at least brought us back to being ranked when it counts. The last few years have been hard for fans (and probably players, too).
And 2 of the 5 years we were ranked under O'Leary at the end of the season we were 7-5 and 1 we were 8-4. Try doing that in today's eSECpn society.

One thing I've noticed about A-B blocking. Nate Cottrell's game REALLY stepped up this year blocking on the edge. He wasn't just diving at people. He was getting to them. We had 4 RS-Sr A-B in 2014. I recall Perkins and Hill took the same leap in performance blocking that year. You have to have A-B in the system who've had 3-4 years ready to go. And try not to have them injured constantly too.

I think the one thing we are all forgetting is this: a kid has got to WANT to major in one of these. Aside from the fact that it's easier to "hide" an athlete in Music Arts vs. Public Policy, we just don't have the variety of majors that other places may have. So yeah, we find a smart kid who's a 4* LB ... but he wants to major in criminal justice because his parents are cops. Or Japanese because he loves anime and wants to be a cartoonist. Or Film and Video studies because he wants to make documentary films about racial injustice. We're going to miss out on those guys.

I still strongly feel we have to recruit nationally. There are kids who want to major in what we offer, who are good players, who are GT guys ... they just might be in Oklahoma, or Nevada, or Oregon, or New York ... we just need to find them. And that takes time and money.

True. I think Mason could move to AB and team with NC for some devastating blocking. Mason showed it several times this year.

Win 12, 11, and 12 like Stanford did, and football players wanna play football. At least the '1-8' do. If you think all the guys we recruit now want to major in management, well okay then.

We were only 7-5 and ranked at the end of the year once.

We’d be ranked both the 7-5 and 8-4 seasons with an 8-5 and a 9-4 record adding the FCS team to convert that era to this one.

Also in that 7-5 year 4 of our 5 losses were to top 15 teams. Way harder schedule than this past year.

All the 'bleaahh, recruiters don't understand Tech' people can rest assured. George O'Leary has versed Geoff Collins in the pitfalls of The Hill.

Bryant went to the wishbone and started recruiting black players after Southern Cal beat the tar out of them. I think it was 1969. He realized he needed bigger and faster players. Bryant recruited running backs in high school and converted them to OL before that. Most were not big but he relied on quickness. He saw what a big and faster line could do with the USC beatdown. He went to Texas with his staff and Darryl Royal showed them how to run the wishbone. I think he won at least 2 or maybe 3 national championships after 1970 with the wishbone. He also passed out of it but I have not checked the average number per game. The wishbone lost favor when defenses started to figure out better ways to defend it. UCLA was still running the single wing in the late 60's. I think Pepper was still coach there. Any system can work with the right personnel and good play calling.
