There’s another portal period in the spring. Also the portal is extended for teams in the playoff or bowl games. One to keep an eye on is Duke with Santuccis connections there and them having just played.

Repeating my post from other transfer thread.
Could one of you energetic young whippersnappers compare our incoming transfers to our out going? Stars, experience, whatever. Are we gaining or losing talent? Come on energy bunnys. Get to work.
The chart below lists players by position, and the total change in quantity of that position on the roster.

PositionOut (Sr) Out (Tr)In (Fr)In (Tr)TOT
QB0110~0
RB1131+2
WR2333+1
TE3022+1
OL2452+1
DE2322-1
DL3221-2
LB1112+1
DB2252+3
Punter1001~0
Totals17172416+6

The star analysis is not worth my time imo, mostly because it doesn’t say anything. Zeek Biggers was a 2 star when he committed, and I trust our staff’s ability to develop.

Looking at it by position group, we see the QB group getting younger, RB group getting more deep and younger, WR room adds a very young and very experienced mix on both ends (Fr & Tr). TEs we lose absolute studs at blocking but add two blocking TEs from other ACC schools, both upperclassmen. The two incoming freshman look to be more ball-catching TEs. OL we lose two starters and some depth but add an absolute monster unit of freshman and have two additional transfers to bolster the unit.

Defensively, the -3 on the Lines worries me, but after the DB injuries this year, that +3 to DBs feels kind of nice. LB room gets deeper, DB room is now fairly young but deeper. I do think that the DE/DL transfers have 3 immediate contributors, and 4* Fr Christian Garrett could be a stud and play early. The (5) seniors we lost hurt, but other than Romello and maybe Horace, the transfers out were probably never playing to begin with. If we land AJ Hoffler (Clemson DE), I think we’ve replaced the seniors accordingly and hopefully create some depth behind them with other freshman or transfers.

Of the transfers 4/16 are underclassmen. So treat the Tr column as we are getting older and an injection of more experience. (Each of the four are in different positions too, LB, OL, DB, WR, so it’s not like one position group is adding youth but others adding experience.

The freshman that we add are our highest rated group of freshman ever, so while we’re getting younger, we seem to be getting more athletic too.

As far as I’m concerned, we’re getting better. Star talent might agree, but the especially athletic youth (Fr) and experience (Tr) we’re adding should be better than what we lost.

Good analysis. I thought about quibbling with you around the margins but you really did cover all the bases well.

The problem with “stars” or quality is that you lose players of known production and replace them with players of unknown production. Even here you can make an educated guess if a transfer had starting time at another school or lots of snaps. But, how the overall chemistry of the team comes together is where coaches are really going to earn their salaries. Almost any team, no matter how good, no longer has a straight forward path to reload like they once did.

Thanks Sean. Excellent summary. Hopefully the 2 FR DL and 2 FR DE can contribute. Maybe we get another transfer here. Several of the other highly rated FR may also contribute. Interesting to see if young Harpring can contribute. He certainly has the genes.

My pleasure! My biggest hope is that a stronger LB room can make up for growing pains on the DL. We are really stacking strength offensively too. As sad as losing Singleton is, I feel that we’re executing a fairly solid plan in terms of roster management.

Best summary so far. Stars don't matter so much for transfers. The -3 for DE and DL is where we have been lacking the most and really need help there to move up a notch.

I went for the star approach and it turns out we are basically even (all are per On3 unless unavailable). So the question is, do you prefer having a pair of standouts in Singleton and Brown, or do you prefer depth across the board and potential based on small school production?

Thanks for the analysis - but this is a perfect explanation of why I had no desire to do the stat analysis myself. The ratings sites don’t necessarily rate our freshman accurately, they definitely pay less attention to the kinds of transfers we get versus the big NIL deals, so in my mind what we gain is always underrated by stars.

Not only did you show that it’s pretty even, I’d like to remind everyone that Singleton and that 95 grade is essentially an outlier skewing the numbers ONLY JUST above the incomers. Being one of the highest rated guys in the portal off the rip makes it pretty easy for a casual to think we are losing a lot.

I think we have shown promise with getting “second rate” guys from P4 schools and really cannot compete with the biggest schools for the best transfers, so picking out the best rated guys on G5 or out of FCS programs. I usually think of it as an analogy where Georgia Tech is Borussia Dortmund, and the SEC/Big10 is Bayern Munich. We’re going to lose someone who wants more than 1m a season. But we can make a name for ourselves developing those guys and grabbing efficiency around them - same way with the coaching staff too.
