It might be how they are advised. IDK

Every team goes through so many iterations, I would imagine each players expectation of depth chart position over the years is constantly in flux.

Yeah it just seems dumb. You are a RS freshman getting a free education from a top institute. Why not try to get on the field?

What is it that you all don't understand? I don't mean that as a sarcastic challenge. I mean that genuinely so here are some things that I hear from my GT student:
  • Some kids aren't as interested in the academics at GT as they thought they were and by that I mean the degree program/classes they are having to take, not that they don't want to play school
  • Some kids thought they wouldn't have to work as hard in class as it turns out they do. They are completely capable of doing the work, they just aren't that interested in playing school
  • Some kids thought they would be higher up on the depth chart (yes, even the R-Fr) and see themselves getting recruited over or perceive themselves getting recruited over
  • Some kids are not as happy with the campus life as they thought they would be and want a different environment
  • Some kids just don't like it when they get to GT and are actually living it
  • Some kids aren't as happy being coached the way our coaches do it when it's actually happening all the time and prefer something different and they couldn't know that until they actually live it
  • Some kids, believe it or not, don't think of GT as The Georgia Institute of Technology and see that as the prestigious institute of higher learning that you and I do and don't have the goal of graduating from this place specifically, and, sadly, some don't have the goal of graduating from anyplace
  • Some just want to play live football some more and don't think they'll have that chance at GT (this is less the younger ones and more the older ones for whom it is pretty clear they aren't going to break into the depth chart)
  • Some have been told they aren't in the plans for the coaches and would probably be better off elsewhere
  • Some are getting offers of higher NIL than we are willing to offer
  • Some kids are no longer treated as BMOC and are expected by their classmates to put in work and that's a harsh reality for some
Most of these are things I've heard in conversations with my daughter over the last 2 years as she's become more of a football fan and has some of the players in her major and has classes with them. Some of the her roommates hang out with some of the players as well. So I get a little inside scoop and, as I said, most of these are things I've gotten in our conversations. I hope that helps. I also am sure that most people can already divine these things but when one says they don't understand it more means that those are things you just wouldn't think yourself, not that you don't actually comprehend.

Yeah I get those things it’s just hard to grasp I guess. Seems like you would try it out longer than 6 months. In reality that’s all a RS Freshman has been on campus. Instant gratification I guess.

That is totally understandable. I have to admit that there are times during my conversations with my daughter that we both shake our heads about all this stuff. She is one of the students who is not awestruck by the players and doesn’t accept excuses from them. That doesn’t mean this stuff applies to all of them. There are really good kids who value the experience and value GT and work hard at it who are also big contributors on the field.

Or GT is not for everyone. If you really don’t like it leave as soon as you can and find a better fit. Football is a job for the players on top of school. When you have 85 on scholarship there are bound to be many who have good reason to find a better fit.
