You guys slightly bashing the older players for squeezing out football into their mid twenties - I agree it should be capped earlier and an age limit would make sense.

But “he could have started his career already” kind of dismisses the fact that a P4 tight end with playing time makes anywhere from 50k to 500k+, probably averaging over 100k.

If your starting salary out of college was over 100k I do applaud you, but my a$$ would be playing football if the rules allowed it (even if the rules are bad)

ESPN did a bio on him before the Miami / Florida game I believe. They spun it as a heartwarming story of perseverance. For me it viewed as one of the more depressing stories of the season. This dude is like 27 and couldn’t bring himself to start his life. Imagine being 23 still trying to play HS ball. Just sad. And borderline creepy.
To be fair Haynes King will be 25 after this season and this will be his 6th year..

6 years was possible, and not terribly uncommon, prior to covid. You just had to take a redshirt and then a medical redshirt. It happened. GT has had a few. Covid added a possible 7th year.

The issue is academic progress. Most players are finishing their BA/BS in less than 4 calendar years. How do they get 3-4 more seasons on one MA/MS degree when almost all are 1-2 years at full time?

There is no reason the age limit should be a problem. BYU has had older players forever due to their Mormon missions. Heck there are lots of regular college students that are way better off not going straight from HS to college. For many an enlistment in the Military for a few years is the best thing that could happen to the "kids." They get a chance to grow up before attending college and get an idea of what they may actually want to do with their lives.

Guys like Haynes King, as said elsewhere he is 25, by now likely know why he wants to due once he finishes playing college football. Getting well paid to play while figuring out life's path hurts no one and helps many.

Look at our QB/Co-OC Coach. He is a great example how playing at an older age set him up for his professional career as a coach!

I’m not saying it’s bad. I’m responding to the guy who thinks it’s creepy for a 27 year old to be playing with college athletes. I would stay in college forever if I was getting 500k+ in NIL money..

Right. I just don’t know how they’re dragging it out that long unless they're doing multiple masters or APR doesn’t apply to masters degrees.

APR counts towards both undergraduate and graduate degrees. The caveat is changing majors. That can slow it down because the calculation is redone every time a new major is chosen.

I thought as long as the player left in good standing it didn't count against APR. Used to have 5 years eligibility with a redshirt until covid. I'm not sure any rules apply anymore though.

40% of required courses by 2 years, 60% by 3 years, 80% by 4 years. Minimum of 6 semester credits passed and enrolled as a full-time student. If you change majors (either as an undergraduate or a graduate student), the numbers are recalculated.

That’s fair but the Miami dude situation was beyond ridiculous.

Qb rhodes is now working as a gt coach. First assignment is Defense to learn more about thst side. At games his dad has said rhodes wants a career in football even though he has a gt degree in BA. Will bryan wanted same thing and post gt went to ga state and then worked in strength at MTSU.

AT b ham bowl I asked qb rhodes dad about gt limited courses offerings and an idea to create a Gt blended sports certificate with experts at gt, emory, ga st.

The idea is to get " older( stronger and experienced) " players who want sports career to be more interested in Gt.

Got to get guys that are sports type to WANT to come to Gt.
Our limited " degree offerings is fixed by bor" but we should be creative about certificates"

Come on hill guys- we are paying the players!.
Rhodes dad liked idea.

Will burned shirt in the last few games of the 2015 disaster season. If Ol coach was sane , that final year would gave been special.

The guy had 273 receiving yards in 9 years and you think he’s making $500K lol

Absolutely not lol I’m speaking for players like Dillion Gabriel who was 25 this year.. Weird ay?
Way is that a problem? Makes college football better and the young man makes money he couldn’t any other way.

GT has a lot of grads that are well into there 20s when they get out.

When I was in school, most took 5 years to graduate with the hours for an engineering degree even though the catalog was defined for 4.

Gabriel was 23 this season. He just turned 24 three weeks ago.

But yes, it is weird that you can’t see the difference between a 9th year guy and a 6th year guy. Very weird. Ay.

Alan Bowman has been in college 7 years and is only 24. So I guess it’s all about the age? Cam Rising same thing. Neither will play in the NFL. So when does it no longer become creepy? What is the cut off? 6,7,8 or 9?

I don’t intend spending anymore of my night fact checking your numbers to see if you made those up as well, so feel free to continue feeling however you do towards 9th year college football players and we can get this thread back on topic.

I’ll do it for you. So 7 years is just slightly less creepy? And 9 years is max creepy? Way to dodge the question..

Oh and Rising has another year of eligibility he will use
