That's great but is he wrong?
I questioned the statement CPJ said myself. I just don't think it's something a coach should say publicly. It's problematic on several levels.

I'm riding right on the fence with CPJ. I felt similar before 2014 and then he changed my mind. If we had won 7-8 games last year I would say no way does he deserve to be on the hot seat but if we end up with a 6-6 year or worse this year after last, then we need to look elsewhere. I want 2014 to be more along the lines of the norm, yes I realize that can't happen every year, but winning 8-9 games could be the norm with 10+ wins happening every 3-4 years. If we start heading back to how we looked in 2010-2013 we need to move on IMO. Like someone else mentioned, I am a big fan of Paul, his demeanor, his attitude, and the offense, but the consistent lack of defense, and the frustrating negative plays over the last two seasons have warmed his seat for me. We can win 7 games a year with a lot of coaches out there. I think we can be better than that. I hope we can be better than that with Paul on a more regular basis. I think we can still win 8-9 games this year if we get a win this weekend.

What can our new AD do to get us close to a factory program? New program that's less rigorous for athletes, new coach that has a more appealing scheme, new facility's? I don't know how most of the alumni see CPJ but if a high percentage is unwilling to donate because of him then we need to start talking about what's next.

Imo if we win 8 or more they won't consider it unless alumni is saying they won't donate money because they want him gone. If we are around 6 or 7 wins there will be talk but more than likely he will stay if we win 5 or less then there will be serious consideration of getting rid of him.

I just can't see Stansbury taking over in late November and then firing CPJ a week or so later. Especially when it makes much more sense financially to let him go after next season if we end up having to.

I like cpj and I agree with what you are saying but the one reason I could see him firing him this year is because of either another bad season of .500 or below or because of a ton of good coaches available.

It's not meant to be a news report its a blog opinion piece. Even if you take would CPJ said in its entirety it's still problematic.

If GT finishes worse that 6-6 i think CPJ will be shown the door.

I don't think GTAA has the money to pay another firing.

Sometimes, what a good coach needs is a strong partner on the admin side. And frankly, Tech has not had a good AD in many years. It's the AD's job to raise money, build facilities, run the programs, manage the marketing ... and we just haven't had an A team doing that. I think Todd is a good start so let's wait and see what he thinks?

Also, I am just not a fan of changing coaches every 6 or 7 years. There's just too much "churn" created for the possibility of improvement. Look at UGA. Unless they become an SEC power ... they've created a lot of angst. I like coaches in place 10, 15 and more years so you can see a style for a longer period of time.

I think it is far better to build a system, a Tech Way of running a football program, and surrounding the coach with the personnel and systems to make that Tech Way work. We haven't done that. We rely on the coach ... his system, his motivation, his connections ... and so when you change coaches, you change A LOT.

I think we'd be in a far better position long term, if Todd told CPJ this ..."We like you. We like what your'e doing. But we have to build a Tech Way of doing things. So, I'm going to help you. First, you are going to hire better staff. And you going to delegate play calling to the OC. Second, you are going to teach, I mean TEACH, the TO to the coaching staff. And third, you are going to hold the coaching staff accountable for teaching the TO to the team. So, if they fail to do so and we continue to see execution errors, we expect you to manage them or manage them out. Finally, you need to establish a succession plan so this system we are building lives on after you leave. So, within the next year, you need to have an assistant coach who is your logical successor and he needs to be within our system now so you can teach him. If you do that, we're going to win, we're going to win the Tech Way, and we're going to do our Institute proud. If you can commit to doing that, we're good. If you can't, we need to talk further as your contract concludes."

That's what I would do.

I agree with you on the changing coaches a lot causes disorder,Tennessee having three head coaches from 2008-2010 almost killed the football program. Paul Johnson however has been at GT for 9 seasons.

I think that is what CPJ wants to be let go . He has done nothing lately but make excuses why he is not winning he keeps trying to compare GT to clempsun and I do not believe GT would have about 70percent special admits on the team plus all the other benefits players are getting at clempsun. CPJ knew what Gt was when he took the job . To be successful at GT you have to go further than a days car ride from GT to recruit players. If I remember right the 90 team had players from 35 states and you have to surround you're self with great asst coaches. I think CPJ is a great coach but he is to stubborn to change when something is not working OL COACH. There will be a new head coach at GT in the near future and who ever it is I hope he looks at how Bobby Ross did it and sees that it can be done at GT.

True. But he hasn't had a good AD and he hasn't done the other things you need be a long-term continuous program.

For a fun comparison, look at Vince Dooley and the Dogs. (Fun fact .. in high school, he played as a Yellow Jacket for his alma mater). OK, over his first 8 years coaching at UGA, he was 67% vs. CPJ's 58% at Tech. Had CPJ not had last year's results, he would be in the same ballpark as Dooley. Dooley once quipped that "until you've been burned in effigy" you really haven't been tested as a coach.

The point I'm making is this ... things are never as bad as you think they are and they're never as good as you think they are. Look at the trend, compare to a benchmark, and calibrate the result. I think CPJ would be better with a better AD. Let's see.

He can loose out from here and won't get fired. Red has put out the details of his contract and the buyout is too big after this year. After next year it is manageable.
He gets - and should get - at least a year to work with the new AD to see what they can do together. Some of the things like extra staff are not THAT expensive. And should be doable.
If he wants a waterfall in the locker room or wiffle ball court in the lounge area then that needs to get shut down quickly.
Stansbury should help focus on getting more butts in the seats but that is partially on CPJ as well.

I watched a program on Tennessee's new football facilities. Magnificent. But they talked about how the locker rooms were ventilated from within each locker so the room didn't smell and how each locker had ports for iPhones and other PEDs. Hard to see how these lead to winning championships, but the donors paid for it.

They did have a kickass strength and conditioning facility though.

I think eventually sometime in the future a new Neyland Stadium will be built that could seat 110,000-120,000. Tennessee does have great football facilities but i can't figure how the turf of the football field is so poor. Artificial turf i think will eventually be put in Neyland Stadium.
