As far as recruiting nationally . Correct me if I'm wrong, I thought CPJ said we now have 5 staffers for recruiting and TStan is working on getting more. 5 doesn't seem like a lot of your trying to get broader reach.

I don't know if this germaine here or not, but I was reading about Howard Schnellenberger's turnaround at Miami. They too were in bad shape and considered dropping football, or least going down to Div. 2. He referred to recruiting the "State of Miami" and to dominate the recruiting efforts within the city limits.

We seem to have no burning platform. Are we recruiting nationally? No. Dominating the State of Atlanta? No. Picking up odds and ends. It seems so. I don't have an answer, but it seems GTAA has none either. What's the plan?

Heres is the thing. When CPJ first got here there was a huge stress on recruiting georgia and alabama. 80 percent of our players were from georgia in 2010 2011 and 2012. Those that weren't were from alabama near georgia. The problem was we were constantly missing on people. Groh had recruiting ties up in virginia and maryland that we leveraged to land a few people. After 2012 johnson decided to implement the navy approach of recruiting nationally. We picked up players like ricky juene. eventually this even lead to landing a player like lucas johnson out of southern california. But we really still are losing a lot of recruiting battles, even some we should have won ( demetris robertson chose cal over us partly due to their degree, now turns out he couldn't really cut it there, probably would have had problems here too) and that had to be because of that school out east and the limited offerings we have here. The problem is for every miss we have it hurts bad because even if we get a win ( travis custis, cj leggett, aj gray) sometimes things happen that kill us simply due to our school. We need to have an extremely large recruiting staff to scrutinize the potential recruits. We need to have something to offer them in the here and now not just 40 years. and the most damning thing. I think we need to lie to them. We need to grayshirt, we need to overrecruit these 2-3 stars and hope we can pick up the diamonds from a large amount of chaff. Or we keep doing things the right way and fall even further behind.

Its not, but its 5 more than he had from 2008-2016. We need to have at least a recruiter per assistant to be on par with even georgia southern. We also need abotu 3 more QC coaches. 9 more recruiting assistants, 5 more nutrition specialists. and probably 10 or so more academic support assets. Whether or not you like johnson, i don't think there is any coach out there we would want to target that would like to lose the amount of help they get from their universities to coach here.

JET actually saved CPJ job. After the Tevin years, which was actually more on the defense but Tevin gets the blame, and then the Vlad debacle, I believe that if we don't get a QB like Thomas and get one like Marshall he would have been fired a couple of years ago. This offense could be dynamic but you have to have talent and have to be more balanced. You can't run against a 8 man front consistently.

The degree options excuse for poor recruiting is legitimately the most preposterous of them all. George O'Leary faced this same circumstance and recruited on a completely different level than where are currently. The fact we run the offense we run is reason number 1 for our poor recruiting. The fact our coach has no personality is reason # 2. We most definitely have limitations in recruiting and to deny that is foolish. We are never going to be UGA or FSU in recruiting. But my goodness we should be better than Duke. When I hear people saying Duke is an easier place to recruit to because of reason X, Y, or Z I lose it. They are an easier place to recruit to now because they run a pro style offense compared to what we run.

George O leary recruited before twitter was a thing. He recruited when you only had x number of phone calls you could make a week. He recruited when in home visits were a big thing. He recruited when national recruit ranking sites were not a thing. He recruited when APR was not a thing. He recruited when the Hill was less than a decade outside of a national championship and was friendlier to football due to the homer rice years. He recruited when the school was still mostly georgia based students with a larger student body that actually liked football. Comparing the recruiting in 1998 to now is ridiculous.

Degree Options are a severe limitations in the age of twitter and instant access negative recruiting.

I'm not dead sure what we tell the guys now I just know that we are losing attrition of guys from recruit classes (for WHATEVER reason) at a THIRTY-FIVE % clip the last few yrs. Start at '12 til '15 (a full 4 yr cycle) and figure it.

Your statement of degree options having a larger impact on recruiting today than in the past due to twitter is one of the more twisted pieces of logic I have seen on this board. And that says a ton.

Is it though? recruiting is more interconnected than ever before. Recruits who normally would never even have the chance to talk to each other do now. Lets say you have a kid that legit wants to major in History because his favorite teacher at high school is his history teacher. We go after him. We sell our HST degree. He doesn't even think to ask about the calculus classes, we don't bring it up because well why shoot ourselves in the foot. That's a kid we might get in a vacuum. He gets helped through calc and his lab science and hes a great player for us.

Fast forward now. We do the same thing with this kid. He is up on GT. he tweets at another kid we offer. That kid mentions the calc requirement. Or a coach mentions it to him immediately because that coach can see his twitter and knows we offered, so he knows he has to counter that. Kid gets cold feet. ends up going to duke or wake or somewhere else because its an easier path to do what he wants and potentially play at the next level. Social media fully changed the game. Our limited majors is just another thing that can recruit against us by word of mouth.

So boaty1 what was your major, and did you play anything at the high school level in georgia.

OK. So how do you explain the fact that Gailey had figured out how to recruit here at the time of his firing? The social media explosion was certainly well underway at that time and Scout and Rivals were prominent sites with lots of subscribers. Yet Gailey's last full class was ranked in the top 20 and before you say that was a fluke his 08 class was ranked in the top 25 at the time of his firing and he was poised to finish with at least a top 40 class which is far better than our current administration is doing.

Do you believe Duke is an easier school to recruit to than GT? I've heard this excuse as to why they have beaten us 4 out of 5 years from more than I care to admit and you seem to be following in their vain.

Not that it has anything to do with this conversation but I was a history major. Class of 03 from GCSU. Been a tech fan since I was 6 when I fell in love with Mark Price and John Salley on the hardwood. Shortly after GT won the national championship in football and I was hooked on both sports from then on out. Judging by your online demeanor I'm going to guess you are an alum of GT. Good for you. It's a great degree and you should be proud of it.

The reason i asked your major was for my own suspicions. Most of the ti e the people who discount the rigor and academic side did not go to tech. Its impossible to really understand not having a potential fall back on a non math heavy degree if your math skills arent that great coming out of school. I will quite trying to convince you otherwise as you really dont have the frame of reference. You have to have experienced it to understand.

As for gailey I wont argue he seemed to have figured something out. My guess is that it was the three and done plan. Aka well get you to the nfl in 3 so you should play for us where you will start immediately to get film and you dont have to be eligible all 4. Its what id do if Apr wasnt a thing. You sell that plan to a kid then he hets in and a lot of them realise its not so bad and they can do it. Those that dont you ride them until they fail or leave for the draft. Its what uga does. Its why they have a sub 50 percent grad rate.

On duke. I think cuttcliffe has made it easier to recruit. They have dumped a ton of money into it. They had 9 starters from outside the South on defense a d thanks to duke basketball their school has a national name. People tend to look at duke as if this is the duke from 2008. They also tend to forget that while cutcliffe was beuilding the program he loat to ua 6 straight years in a row. He lost to a lot of people. He is seeing the rewards of tine put in. Just like beamer did at vt and Dooley did after 20 years at uga.

In all fairness to @Boaty1, I think you would need to attend more than GT to be able to compare the rigor. Did you also attend another college? From my own experience, I can say that GT was tougher than the other colleges I attended.

Think the way to go is to try for an offense like chip Kelly ran at Oregon. He had fewer star players than his competition for a while and was competitive. Also switching to the shotgun read option stuff could be a relatively easier transition for our triple option players so we don’t need to completely start from scratch.

So maybe Scott frosts gets fired and comes?
I sure there is someone on that tree that I don’t know about.

What about Brent Key? He is has the necessary resume, and is an alum. Don’t know what kind of offense he would run, but Bama ran some read option when kiffin was there, maybe they overlapped?

I think I’m out on whisenhunt although I’m a fan, he never coached college. Same for goose godsey.

Maybe bill O’Brien gets fired and wants to return to ATL? Unlikely. And would look like Chan redux.

Someone from the Gus malzhan (sp) offense school?

I don’t know much about the satterfields of the world.

If Scott Frost gets fired by NU for going possibly 0-12 GT might get a bargain deal since Nebraska would owe him 26 million dollars

Gus is on the hot seat right now. I was talking to a buddy of mine who is an Auburn fan. He was telling me that he felt that Auburn’s offensive scheme is hurting their recruiting because there are no NFL teams running their offense. I really can’t remember the details of his explanation and I don’t watch the NFL so I had to take his word for it. I do remember he said something about zone blocking on his list. Anyway, I just thought this was interesting because our offense might not be the only antiquated scheme.

Doesn't Gus have a ridiculous buyout? Like 30 million? Auburn is in a pickle. I think Gus is similar to PJ in that he runs a quirky offense that he has to have just the right guys to be successful, especially at QB.

Satterfield runs a zone running offensive scheme. They mix in a lot of options and in the couple of games that I have watched, they have run a few triple options. The QB is going to pass 20-25 times in his offense.
