Official MBS Announcement: 5 Games over 5 Years

I have mixed feelings, but after sleeping on it. I do think this is a net positive. From all the fine print Q&A on the announcement it's clear that TStan is listening. Lots of response to complaints about the UT game experience. Part of this deal is addressing those issues. Also, he wants to get a 7th home game in those years. So, I believe, most of our concerns/complaints have been heard.

For those of us who have a deep connection to BDS it hurts to give up the chance to see ND there.

But, for the 99% of fans and potential fans around Atlanta, this is a more exciting interesting setup. Subjectively, we can prefer BDS, but the truth is MBS is an objectively better venue. We're guaranteed good weather- indoor or open roof. Comfortable seats. Better concessions. Free press from local and regional media talking about the deal/game. Guaranteed National TV spot. Something cool/different/exciting to show to recruits...

Unless I'm forgetting a school, Tech is the only P5 team that has the opportunity to move a home game to a NFL stadium in the same city*. It highlights what Tech has to offer being in the heart of a vibrant major city.

I keep hearing how great ND at night in BDS would be... but there's no guarantee of that. A miserable hot 1 pm September kickoff is just as possible.

Someone asked- 'Why not play every game at MBS then?' Because we're not going to sell 75,000 tickets to Gardner-Webb. There's no opportunity cost of lost potential ticket sales. But with Clemson and ND, our capacity is below the equilibrium price-demand level.

Tech received $2.85 million when we played UT. That game, we were invited, the Peach bowl controlled all the revenue. Reportedly, for this, except the Clemson kickoff Tech is renting the venue and we have control over tickets, parking, luxury boxes, etc. And the indication is that part of the deal is a sweeter deal for the Clemson kickoff game. I'd expect our take from this deal will be much more. (We shouldn't have to give ND or the other schools anything extra to play there vs here.)

I've shared graphs before but Money = Recruiting = Wins. (Plug staff, facilities, branding, etc in that equation wherever you want, it boils down to that. As of the latest data, Tech is 10th in the ACC in Football spending and 48th in the P5. On par with Wake Forest and Illinois. Add $5 million to those numbers and we'd be around 4th in the ACC and top 30 in P5. On par with VT.

*(Arguably, TCU, but Arlington is 30 minutes from Fort Worth. Disregarding USC, Miami and Pitt who don't have their own stadiums.)

If we ever get to the point of selling 40,000 season tickets at GF vs. selling 60,000 (to GT fans) season tickets at MBS - what do you think we should do?

I think games should be played on campus for the great part.

In the above scenario, I would hope we would tear down GF and build our own new stadium. Hopefully this time GT engineers could do it symmetrically.

I don’t think we would every tear down GF because we sell it as the oldest and winningest field in CFB. Personally, I think BDS and the old concrete stands under it all need to go, even though it is a cool piece of history. Build a new stadium around GF that is completely connected, has field level access and concessions for lower sidelines (similar to MBS), seats instead of benches, and space between rows so that I don’t have to stand on my seat in order for someone to get by.

What the heck are you guys talking about? BDS is a classic, and isn’t going anywhere. Nor should it, it’s a great venue. Nor would we ever have the money to do more than small tweaks.

I am all for it. Even if it doesn't make us tons of bucks on it's own, it reinforces the ATL connection.

Adding the previous stuff for context. You said NFL stadiums have a shelf life so plays won’t be remembered as fondly because the shelf life is 25 years. I agreed that memorable plays are better in BDS, but brought up the JT play because it was in an NFL stadium and we remember that, but your counter was it was only remembered because that was a bowl game. I gave similarities of a bowl game to our upcoming MBS games to show why those games can have plays that we remember. Now I guess plays from those games can’t be remembered because they are only marquee to GT?

If that’s the case then we need to take 2015 vs FSU off the list of special games because it was only marquee to Tech fans before it started and the rest of the country was MEH. Once again, I 100% agree that the FSU game was definitely better in BDS, but had it happened in MBS, do you really think it still wouldn’t be a special game to GT fans?

It wouldn’t be as special. Because I love BDS...I have none for MBS. To each his own. Some Tech fans may like MBS better today. If so we may need to renovate BDS more than I thought.

If that is the case, then most of my objections to playing one game per season at MBS would go away. Unfortunately, my one last remaining objection would be a deal breaker: Tech has never won a game I have attended that was not played at BDS (true story, folks). That really puts me in a bind, as far as that seventh home game is concerned...should I stay (home) or should I go?

I stated before this is why I’m in favor of this deal. BDS gets its obligatory 6 gms and the 404 takeover at MBS for the extra money!!!

Considering you're exactly who I'm referring to, I call bull on you.

There's a big difference between not liking the idea, but being willing to see if it works, even though you have doubts, and being a staunch traditionalist who rejects a new idea out of hand, while using a one-note argument (It's a money grab!) to beat down any who disagree.

The former has a negative outlook, but is constructive, as they're open to new avenues to accomplish multiple goals.

The latter, which you fall in to, is destructive. You seek to destroy any positive views because you don't like them and you think only you can be right, utilizing tradition as your crutch.

I'm sure you'll be at the game, because you're a GT supporter, but also be the person who will loudly tell everyone around him throughout the game that we shouldn't even be there. You're the Dante Hicks of GT fans.

What is there to wait and see? I bet Animal is familiar with BDS and MBS. Does he or I or anyone really need to wait until 2025 to criticize this move.

Parking is cheaper around MBS, especially in the gulch, the best way to go is take MARTA. For what it's worth when I heard the announcement I bought season tickets.

I went to twitter to gauge the reaction to the MBS deal and you know what pops up when I search for "Georgia Tech"? Our women's BB coach getting placed on leave for personal matters. Talk about taking some wind out of our sails.

The reality is, the MBS deal puts the onus on GT FANS to step up. If it fails, GT fans will have no one to blame but ourselves. We are the ones responsible for buying the tickets and showing up. If we don't buy the tickets and show up to BDS (which was happening a LOT lately...UVA homecoming anyone?) it's a small blip on the ATLANTA radar. If we don't buy tickets and show up to MBS games, its a blip on the NATIONAL radar. If you want to complain, at least complain inside MBS while drinking your $5 beer and eating your $2 hotdog while being in a conditioned environment and staring at the gigantic jumbotron and wraparound screens. It's ONE game a year for 5 years...driving an extra 2 miles down the road isn't going to hurt you...in fact, it's going to HELP GT.

GT fans want nice things. Thinking outside the box with the MBS deal is one way for GT to get those nice things.
