Looks like NIL is soon to be yesterday's news

CA bill to make athletes get salaries
So much to unpack and so many unknown consequences, but the “good intentions” of revenue sharing are going to be another boon to big football programs. If a kid in a non-revenue sport is considering a couple of schools, the possibility of that school’s football success now becomes a bigger factor.... it’s a potential bonus pool

Question: if these players become salaried employees of the school, is that salary in addition to or in lieu of scholarship?

I’m not thinking this will solve as many issues as it creates... I’m also not sure it’s going to work out for the best interest of the student athletes.

Unintended consequences!!

Government bureaucracy in charge of college sports, hmm 🤔, yeah I think that’ll probably work fantastically well.

Can’t imagine it could be any worse than the disaster the ungoverned approach has brought us. 😳
Fun thought...
Will student athletes unionize? All of their employers are either state institutions or private institutions under their individual state laws. Unless there is a unifying national body, it’s hard to imagine that being one size fits all...
How are GA and SC going to compare to California and New York?

Basketball is a team sport. The bench warmers are just as important a contributor as the starters. One of their parts is to
compete hard in practice and weight room so they make the starters better. I think any nil money should be distributed evenly to everyone on the team, otherwise, it is a double standard to call it a team effort.

Don’t they play a team sport in the NBA? Not everyone is equally important.

I don't think the system needs many tweaks. The one piece that annoys me is tampering. I don't know if you can take away tampering but it would be nice to reward the school that gets their player tampered with similarly to how you buy the rights to a player in soccer. That really cedes a lot of power from the student-athlete to the school though, which feels wrong as long as "student" is in the name. Letting schools pay the players directly for their rights might be the move and would effectively put us on a free market pathway (which it already is in a roundabout way right now - might as well continue removing barriers). Wonder if promotion/relegation would start to come into the fold at that point.

I'm still really interested to see if top 150 players begin matriculating to mid-majors so they can average 30+mpg as freshmen. It could hamper their development but also could land them some crazy NIL deals when they hit the transfer market.

This is communism. In free market capitalism, the most valuable endorsers are the most talented and the most popular.

Yes, true teamwork is somewhat like communism. It’s everyone sacrificing for the good of all.
I think that’s partly correct.

In theory, everyone sacrificing together requires belief in a higher ideal. That could be based on religion, ideology, brotherhood, or something else. The problem with NIL getting out of proportion is that not everyone is sacrificing anymore. Only the little guy is sublimating his personal needs to any great degree.

One of the things Marx was correct about, and I greatly simply his argument, is that a capitalist system which creates a few winners and a lot of losers undercuts the will to produce in the long run.

So, yes, if I’m not a starter, and the starters are getting million $ gifts to play and I’m struggling to get any recognition or remuneration, I’m probably not going to spend a lot of energy trying to make the team better or help the stars shine even brighter.

The challenge for college basketball right now will be how to continue the illusion that the system is fair so all colleges and players will continue to support the system.

This applies to teams and fans too.

The pro leagues all insist on things in their negotiations with players that lower the potential earnings for the very top players in exchange for limiting just how dominant the best teams can be. Or just things that try to explicitly help the worst teams.

It doesn’t completely prevent dynasties but it helps keeps teams around and in business.

People are already frustrated with college sports and how their teams have a harder time than in the past. If fan interest dries up, everyone loses.

Player employment + unions + collective bargaining is the tried and true way of getting regulations in place for that. The conferences are a weird wrinkle, though.

(Pro wrestling is probably more like communism - central planning and all! Other sports are more just socialism. 😉)

This is laughably ignorant. There is no will to produce or improve in an environment where there are no winners or losers. This is why communism always has and always will fail. People will always do what they are incentivized to do. If the are incentivized to do nothing to achieve the same status as everyone else then they will do nothing. If they are incentivized to outperform their peers to receive greater status, then they will strive to excel beyond all others. The opportunity to transform oneself from winner to loser or to elevate one's position in a merit based system, whether that is capitalism in economics or in a non union workforce, was the driving force behind the industrial revolution, which catapulted our country beyond all others. The desire to achieve individual greatness, regardless if someone is starting out below someone else, is the force by which virtually all productivity and achievement is attained.

It is interesting that the PGA has established an Earnings Assurance Program. In my opinion every basketball player on a bball scholarship should get a Earnings Assurance incentive. The stars of the team should get more based on contribution.
”For the 2022-23 season, all fully exempt tour players who compete in 15 tournaments will be guaranteed to earn $500,000 through the creation of the Earnings Assurance Program. For rookies and returning members to the tour, that money isn’t just guaranteed, but will be paid up front, with the players drawing against it during the season from their earnings.”

You are half right.
