Roof has has some nice talent to work with too. I think we have had a bunch of great guys in the past few years and I think we have some great ones coming in.
Correct! By my count GT has had 9 defensive recruits sign in 2017 and 2018 classes that were rated 4 star by some rating service. Nice foundation to build a defense around.
Which raises the question, do you start experience or talent?

That's why it makes sense to go to a school like App State to get a DC (or OC if CPJ wasn't our OC). An established DC on the P5 level isn't jumping ship unless he's either on the hot seat at his current school, in which he's not doing well so they're looking to replace him (see: Ted Roof), or another school is offering him such a large increase in his salary he almost has to say "yes".

Hate to say it, but right now GT is a lateral move at best for most P5 DCs. No one is leaving a job they know and doing well at for the same job with far less certainty. GT just missed a bowl, our HC is older, and he's going on his 4th DC in 10 years. That's not a good situation for an established coordinator at the P5 level to leave a job for, especially if GT can't offer that guy a substantial raise than what he's already making. GT can't offer that.

Someone outside the non P5 level would absolutely bite at a school like GT. It gives that candidate the opportunity to move up and coach at the highest levels, more resources to coach, and will probably more than double his current salary. $600-700K is a BIG raise for someone making $250K. For someone already making $750K+ (which is what a good, established P5 DC is making) a raise to $800-900K isn't as substantial to take the risk on a situation like GT.
Any DC that wants full autonomy over their side of the ball and doesn't already have it where they are would be attracted to GT. The reason we're on our 4th DC is because the previous three haven't been able to get the job done hand's-free. CPJ is looking for someone who can make it happen without needing to be overseen.

I would start the talent so they can get experience. You can’t really gain talent.

Hope the “I told you so” is worth it to want your team to suck.
Just wait till the D shows out next year and we get the comments like this.

The D had all of Roofs players that he taught, and if he would have been given one more year the D would have done the same.....

I don’t want you to be right, but I think you are. After watching app st last night I am excited about the idea of him coming in. An up and coming with a defense that plays aggressive and angry is just what we need. The sit back and wait for them to come to you playstyle of this year was frustrating to watch.

People don't want roof gone because it's the last thing we have that's not hard to understand. They already don't understand the offense wait until we get a DC that has more than one blitz. Heads will explode

As you go into the bowl week, you've got exams, and that's stressful for those kids, and we're putting in more defensive schemes for them.

"They executed it so well tonight, and I was just so proud of them because you can sit in there and write down your assignment on a piece of paper, but to go out there and execute it is difficult. They did it."


After reading that, I'm not sure Woody would fit in at GT. Our coaches are only allowed to "simplify" their schemes as the season goes on...ahem...
Anything is simple when you understand it. A good teacher can make that happen.
