Jose may not make all-ACC but he would be in the running for MVP. We have to find a back up PG. Very nice win!

Jose is for sure on of the most relied upon guys in the ACC. That being said Devoe had a sneaky good game. 11 points and 5 assists on 4-7 shooting and only 1 TO to go along with good d is a good game. IMO the bigger issue when we were missing Jose is we didn't have a leader nor did we have a reliable scorer as others have mentioned Jose was playing more off ball than PG a lot of the time.

This team should rebound so much better than they do. Our bigs have weak hands, and everyone needs to block out much better

I’ve been saying it for a while now. We are lazy with blocking out.

I know we play zone, but still.

With rebounding, a lot of it is a mentality. You’ve got to want it. Find a guy and block him out.

Glad to see Devoe have a decent game scoring. Lots of potential when he gains confidence in his stroke, but needs Jose' on the court while he is still adapting to acc play to be effective offensively. Gueye coming along nicely, as well as Moore. And God help us if we don't have Banks. Keeping these guys healthy is big deal for this team.

A win is a win, and I'll never complain about that. But this game should not have been as close as it was - we were up 11 with 5 minutes left and that lead was cut to 2 just 2 minutes later. Learning how to win and close teams out is something that will come with time and experience in those situations, and I think last night's game was a building block toward that.

Good
- I liked the offensive game plan by the staff to just pound the ball inside. Banks and Gueye had almost half of our FG attempts - shots weren't falling at the end of the first half, but started to find their way later in the game. I agree with Pea that I could deal with a few more kick outs/reposts, but overall was happy we were committed to getting the ball inside.
- Devoe was solid tonight. From what I've seen this year, he's a player that goes as his confidence goes. He's somewhat of a streaky shooter, so when he's feeling it like he was in the first half I'd like to see us run a set to get him another look. I'm really encouraged about where he could be as a player if he can play with more confidence consistently.

Bad
- I had an issue with Pastner sticking with the 1-3-1 as long as he did. It was effective early on, but Brey did a nice job of adjusting, and ND, specifically Laszewski, got a lot of clean looks from the corner later in the game. This make sense with Banks being the back piece because he's responsible for going sideline to sideline - he also played 38 minutes tonight. He was slow to close out, likely because he was exhausted, and even when he did get out to cover, the rest of the defense was slow to rotate, and several times, Mooney was open under the basket when he occupied the space that Banks vacated. It's concerning an adjustment wasn't made, and in my opinion staying in the zone almost cost us the game.
- Going hand in hand with defense, our defensive rebounding was poor tonight. This can also be attributed to the zone, especially the 1-3-1, because often times, one of your big men is left defending on the perimeter and isn't near the basket. 20 offensive boards is tough, and is the reason why they had 13 more shots than we did.

While I am not crazy about the idea of sending our guys back as soon as we shoot the ball and forgoing am attempt at the offensive rebound, I get why CJP did that some last night. We avoided the mess of transitions points and getting set in our D helps a lot

I agree with the desire to have switched out of that 1-3-1 sooner for the reasons above. They had schemed it out by the 10 minute mark in the first half and it only wore Banks down. Not to mention when Alvarado was the face of it we had him running and cutting to keep up (scary after the groin injury).

It was great to see Alvarado and AD both play big minutes, seemingly without the groin or cramping issues. We NEED them to stay healthy.

All in all we are back to .500 in league play. Hope the guys get heavy testament this week and rest up for the murder’s row coming up. At Duke and hosting UNC is going to be tough.

I think you guys are off base with the 1/3/1. In the first half our defensive rotations were slow and we weren't closing out as quickly as we've seen this season.

Why? Maybe because we have a few guys hobbled out there? Maybe, just maybe playing man-to-man would have exposed our defense even more. It might even have resulted in Jose coming off the floor.

The second half defense (last 5 minutes) was noticeably better. I'll give CJP the benefit of the doubt on the defensive end of the floor.

We won this game, in part, because Brea messed up the end game clock management. How in the world do they not foul us (specifically AD) and put us on the line down 2 with 45 seconds to go?

I'm not advocating man would have been the answer - we've run both a 2-3 and a 1-2-2 under Pastner, both of which would have been an effective adjustment last night. ND posted Laszewski up in the corner and the guy shot 44% from three, not counting 5/6 from the line on the 2-3 point attempts he got fouled on. The corners are the most vulnerable spot of a 1-3-1 because you're asking one guy to essentially cover the entire area between the baseline and the block. ND did a good job with quick ball rotations and overloads, which prevented the wing from helping down at the corner. My point is, at least show them something different every once in a while to make them think about something else.

Also, from 4:41 - 2:46 in the second half ND went on a 10-1 run, which included a corner three and three made FTs from Laszewski - I'm not sure how that's 'noticeably better'.

Zone defense does not you to blockout like you can when you plan man. Shot goes and a lot of times their is not a person in you area

The defensive rotations were noticeably better in the second half. Go back and watch again if you don't believe me. Our zone got faster. We can't always be results oriented. Part of the reason ND went on a run is because we didn't score and AD put them on the line for a million free throws.

I said in chat (at the start of the second half) we needed to make an adjustment on Laszewski.

You are acting like ND shredded us all night. They didn't. They scored 61 on 32% shooting and 23% from beyond the arc. Yes Laszewski had a great game and on some occasions took advantage of what the defense was giving. Meanwhile we held NDs second and third leading scorers to 14 less than they were averaging on 3-19 shooting and their 4th leading scorer to under his average on 2-10 shooting. Yes they had one 2 minute stretch where they scored 10 points. They scored all of 5 points the previous 7 minutes. Prior to that stretch they had 47 points through 36 minutes. That is great defense.

Yeah I'm not understanding the complaints on defense either. AD had two bad fouls on 3pt attempts and they hit one 3 from pretty deep behind the arc. Overall the D still played decent even during their run.

To be clear I am not knocking the effort of the guys, or even the performance of the team. Just saying that the 1-3-1 was risky IMHO given that it was Alvarado's first game back from the groin issue and the HEAVY reliance we have on keeping Banks in the game to eat up their bigs.

There are known holes in our zone and ND had a good strategy to exploit them. But as Ivy says, when you give up 61 to an ACC team take it and run.

In a bit more detail, I would have loved to see us run man or a 2-3 a few times just for a different look. But that is nibbling around the edges. The key issue for us is cleaning up rotations and AD's over committing to the perimeter and close outs so we have a better shot at rebounding (not that it will ever be great in this zone).

Specific to risk though, putting Jose in man and having him have to chase all over the half court plus be the object of every pick Bray can come up with is a bigger risk than having him in the rotation at the top of the zone we ran. Same with Banks - more jump shots and less driving which means less chances for him to pick up fouls on driving guards.

Our issues are almost exclusively on the offensive end. Yes our rebounding in the zone ain't great and it irks me too, but it is way down the list of things we need to worry about. Live ball turnovers and lack of perimeter shooting are way bigger issues.

Here's the other side of that.
imagine where we might be if JB3 had redshirted this year - had a full year to work with Coach Rev and then had him for 2 years, along with 2 years from Usher and all the FR and SO.

Yes, this year would be extremely difficult, but the flip side is your upside is higher the next 2 seasons.

i do feel like a lineup that starts JB3 at 5, Jose and Mike in the backcourt and then Usher and one of Moore/Haywood (whichever is further along by next fall) is a pretty solid 5.

Good point--but this yr WITHOUT JB would be beyond gruesome--it may have hurt the program so much that 2121 might have been "a bridge way too far"

if JB3 was going to redshirt , then by that same logic , Devoe should have too. in order to make us better later then cole/wright should do it too.
no point to let Jose/Haywood waste a year now either, so based on that faulty logic ,they should redshirt too, , ,We're going to be a lot better next year but if you can't recruit the replacements you shouldn't be coaching in acc.. Sometimes as an experienced parent, u just gotta say it when you smell a diaper load.

We'd have 0 ACC wins without JB3 in to this point. I think that would be far more damaging to recruiting and reputation/fan base than using a year of eligibility especially when this year isn't anywhere near down the drain. He'd be an amazing 5th year senior but a counter to that is what if he redshirted this year and had a year with Rev and then was amazing enough next year to go to the league. Nothing is a substitute for game experience. He's getting it this year and should be awesome next year. I really think we need to bring in a shooting specialist to work with our perimeter guys. Maybe here's where Mark Price can join in.
