It won't force a change in offense; but it will force a change in blocking for the offense.
If not the OL, then definitely others who blocked definitely cut more than 5 yards downfield. It COULD have a major impact on our O.I think our OL routinely cut more than 5yds downfield, but that's maybe more of an impression than anything.
My 2 thoughts.
Kick off rule, if a guy catches it in the field he is going to run it. No coach in the world would tell his player not to as it is a broken field play.
Blocking. Well, it is going to change some things for our A backs but havings pent many hours watching Tech Offense lately, when we have really good A backs they effectively roll block. This current crew and a few other in the past, not so. Defenders are getting better at avoiding the block and the result is a missed block with our guy on the ground. It might actually make us better.
That is definitely true, but the operative word there is MIGHT. Let's hope it WILLIt might actually make us better.

Johnson comments on that in the latest MyAJC article (https://www.myajc.com/sports/colleg...-blocking-rule-change/H2nG6lP7xEILZVppoMCI5I/). He says most A-back blocking is done within that 5 yard limit.Question for @flea77 or @Coachbraun72 on if this will impact the OL at all. Definitely will impact the A-backs but I think it’ll be ok.

We won't be able to cut the MLB with an OL anymore. The main downfield cut we use to employ was a receiver one that was made illegal i think 3 years ago. Then ricky and smelter started driving people into the dirt.

If the MLB is playing that far up, we won't need to block him intentionally most of the time anyway, he'll get washed out in the trash. If he's blitzing a gap, that's a different story. That's not entirely true, if the linebacker plays up he can be. if he stays back where he can't be cut we will just have to switch block more ( tackle gets him instead of the outside, a takes outside) Its honestly a better way to block him than to dive. However playing the linebacker off that far will result in more dives and traps getting yardage.

The point is our OL are charging the next level. If they miss one they keep going. And they cut because trying to get position with feet and quickness downfield is lower %.
I also think that on some plays, the mlb is 5+ yds back as we're looking to engage.
I agree. Not being able to walk would suck, but the idea of permanent brain damage gives me the same visceral fear as the idea of death.Given the fact that continuous low intensity head impacts are turning brains into mush we should probably encourage, rather than ban, blocking below the waist.
Better to have bad knees in old age than CTE.
