Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

I would way rather have mostly mediocre, occasional greatness, occasional suck than continuous suck.
No argument here.

I'm simply stating the case for why the change was made. You can't blame GT for wanting more. You can blame GT for who they hired (Collins had no real success as a head coach at any level at all) and the ridiculous amount they paid him.

I am not going to argue that Collins is worth what we are paying him, but his contract is in the bottom 3rd of the ACC.

I never hated Paul Johnson.

I didn't like his hiring for one reason only: His offense was old, outdated and had no hope of lasting. There's a reason Oklahoma and Nebraska gave it up decades ago: it's a gimmick. It will fool people for a little while, but once they get used to seeing it, it's over.

That is exactly what happened: A few good years while people were fooled by an offense they hadn't seen in years, but then complete failure once they got used to seeing it.

It was fun while it lasted, but it never had any real hope of lasting.
Don’t buy this at all. Army is currently more competitive than we are and they don’t get near the level of recruits we do.

A one off fluke. Fact is, he started out 9-4, then 11-3, then it was mediocrity or losing every year after that with the exception of 2014. Let's review:

2010: 6-7
2012: 7-7
2013: 7-6
2015: 3-9
2017: 5-6
2018: 7-6

You can't maintain any sort of winning success with an offense most high schools don't even run anymore.
Nice trick there, skipping 2016 (a 9-4 season, with a win over (u)GA, and as many wins over SEC east teams as the dwags had that year)—when in fact it was the 2018 season that never really happened. (Fall 2018 was entirely a fentanyl hallucination while I was in a medically-induced coma...;))

On a more serious note: Johnson's final seasons were handicapped by the fact that we didn't have a dual threat QB. With all respect to Taquon Marshall for the seasons he led as our QB, he wasn't PJ's first choice—that would have been Jaylend Ratliffe, who was medically DQed after a pre-signing ATV accident. (We honored his commitment with a medical scholarship, you'll recall.) If we'd had JR running plays, I think the last two seasons would have played out very differently.

The common wisdom at the end of Johnson's tenure was to say, "See? Everyone has figured out the blueprint for beating his offense." Well, yeah...if the blueprint is to wait until a season when our QB provides no deep passing threat, and then you simply stack the box to stuff the option. Had teams tried that strategy with JR under center, I think they would they would have gotten burned on the deep routes, and would have been forced to re-think their "blueprint".

I'm hoping we can recover enough in the off season to beat Western Carolina.

And that is probably our ceiling for a head coach’s salary until we consistently get more butts in the seats or big donations.

We’ll be bargain shopping the minute we can GC. This is a difficult spot for TStan to be in.

He's the 39th highest paid coach in all of NCAA Football.

What's more, his salary increases every year.

I would do the job for free and probably be able to lose just as effectively as he is.

Musing over coffee today ...I realized that almost 40 years ago to the day, a Number One Notre Dame team came to Grant Field as UGA was fighting for the top spot in college football. A Bill Curry GT team tied them in the second greatest Tech football game I've ever seen. (Only the 1981 Bama game was better. But it was close.) No fancy facilities. No helicopter or skinny suits. Just football.

Forty years later ... paying a coach 10 times as much ... and playing in a similar situation ... we have one of the greatest football defeats in school history.

I skipped 2011 and 2014 as well. The point was to show the sheer number of mediocre seasons. There were far more of them than anything else, hence GT's wanting to make a change.
Well, that was the rationale anyway. The hidden text was that some people had it in for the flexbone offense. Having periodic mediocre seasons has been a Tech thing since Alexander was our coach.

We were 8-5 in 2011 as well..

Unfortunately, his mediocre seasons look much better than Collins’ results. I was very excited when Collins was hired, but this has gotten beyond embarrassing. And I am infuriates me why he will not even make any effort to acknowledge how awful it is in his press conferences.

Where I am at is that I cannot continue to support the status quo nor want to contribute to paying his buyout , get a new coach with what little money we have and repeat this cycle for another 3-5 years

I want to see what options there are if Collins stays and if he is gone what options we have for a coach that can get us winning next season.

The program cannot afford another season like this year nor can it afford another 3 years for a new coach to build things up
