Let's speculate on starters if we get Woody

If or when Woody comes to GT, who does he bring in to fill out the other defensive position coaches? Where does he pull them from and how quickly will they arrive on campus? Perhaps he already has held those conversations and they have accepted the offer. If not I hope that it is a timely process in order to limit the duration of the "unknowns" for current players and defensive recruits alike. Does anyone have any insight on where GT and Woody are in this process? I hope GT holds a press conference tomorrow to announce that Woody is our DC now. I want to hear what his expectations and plans are for coming in and getting started. I can hardly wait! I pray this will be a positive move that will build throughout the offseason, Spring practice, and conditioning as we head into the Fall for next season.

When we hired Groh I was convinced it would benefit us being able to find some smaller DEs to play OLB and only having to recruit 3 DL positions which has always been our weakness under CPJ. But we failed miserably at that. I see no reason to expect us to be better at recruiting the 3-4 now than we were under AG. Not real excited about the 3-4 coming back unless Adams turns out to be a beast of a NT.

Nm... @Lavoisier beat me to it

Anyone have any guesses on who Woody would bring with him?

Budget is not the problem
You seem to say that with a bit of confidence. Now we just need further explanation on what you mean by this?
Do you mean it is close to making this Kelly and Woody combo a reality? Or that talking/scheming has hit a snag? Or that big donor(a) have come forward for Tstan and now GT has few Brinks trucks parking at each meeting sight for Woody and Kelley to tour before reaching a final decision. I am just curious why money isn't a issue? Or is it more about pulling Kelley away from other schools who want to hire him? Finally you could just come forward with the details and spare us the guessing and suspense. Thanks

Back on topic. I think quicker DL fit better what I saw App St doing on D. I think Branch very much does and Glanton too. I'm
Leaning toward Glanton at NT honestly. Not so sure about Cerge and Adams ability to shoot gaps and slant as well though maybe they can flourish and surprise me here.

Some of our success may depend on unknowns stepping up. Alston and Owens maybe? If Owens can ball at 270ish he and Branch might make for some destabilizing DEs in a 3-4. But I know little about Owens ability, kinda just wishful thinking primarily.

I think we have a slew of guys that fit the bill at ILB. OLB? This I'm really uncertain about. Who do we have with appropriate size, pass rush, and hip turn to change direction and cover TEs and RBs when necessary? I'm kinda drawing a worrisome blank here.

Secondary is largely unaffected imo.

Just the ramblings of another dumbass fan.

I know this is supposed to be fun and all that, but once again folks who know next to nothing about position skills -- don't take it personally; we don't and guys who do it for a living every day struggle to get it right -- want to put a team together. I know nothing of Woody, at all, and just admit it. And keep in mind that when Ted Roof was hired as DC the speculation, immediately, was that he was going to make a great successor to Paul Johnson. I really am more interested in the end of term to see if Roof's son will eat a year of eligibility and follow his dad to NCSU.
Doesn't that describe this entire message board on ALL topics? (Including me.)

Edit: With some notable and rare exceptions of the contributions of former players and those extremely close to the program (tip of the hat to all ya'll)

OLB is a legit concern, anyone remember that poor DE who got converted to Olb when Groh was here? Poor guy just got toasted repeatedly in passing situations. Fans were rough on him but i'm guessing he was the best we had, and obviously doing his best too.

Hopefully Woody's fast attacking scheme doesn't depend so much on having that nfl 3/4 prototype, huge, agile OLB/DE hybrid but can instead use a true LB and rely on his quickness to shoot gaps on blitzs instead of going man up against O-linemen.

I like that this 3/4 will potentially get our best linebackers on the field at the same time- Swilling, Alexander, Mitchell. I really think Vicious Alexander can show out in this scheme.

Really good stuff, WC.

I also wonder how much of what he did at AppSt in terms of size was the result of preference vs. constraints.

For example, one of his DE's was about the size of ASA. I've been going with the assumption that this was because they couldn't find a 280 lb guy quick enough to provide the movement he desires, and at GT, he would be able to. This has led me to believe that ASA will be an OLB. That said, maybe he prefers an ULTRA quick guy in there to really shoot gaps hard, and ASA will be a DE.

It'll be interesting to see where guys are slotted in the spring, and will tell us a lot, I think about what kind of defense we expect to see.

Is there a spot for a guy like Adams, as you said above?

Additionally, I've been assuming that Brant Mitchell will be an ILB, but with his size and ability to get downhill and history of coverage responsibilities as a 43 Mike, a world where he's a 34 Jack (Rush OLB) isn't insane to me either, and we go with BJS and Alexander inside and just fly around. Heck, even the other OLB position (the one with much more coverage responsibilities) would be interesting to see how a guy like Kaleb Oliver, or the redhead kid, or roof, or somebody else slots in there.

It's pretty ridiculous to think that Kelly would ignore DC offers elsewhere to come be a ST or position coach at GT.
Ok..... not saying he would, was just saying it would be nice. And if he only had an offer from Colorado State maybe he would. Who knows? I wouldn’t want to live there lol.
