Congress is of course trying to prove their worth by introducing a bill "to do something." HR 3999. So poorly worded upon drafting it can be interpreted to ban all semi autos and most all parts and components of same.

https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/3999

As for gun enthusiasts that own dozens of firearms being deemed mentally ill. Here is an example of one such citizen. He's also demonstrating a device that does increase the rate of fire in a semi auto.

Miculek is a gun enthusiast and exhibition shooter. If you aren't familiar with him he is one of the best "shooters" in the world. Highly skilled and can shoot revolvers faster than this device spits rounds out of the rifle in the linked video. He is in no way a danger to society.

Another gun enthusiast, prior military, and trainer. Lots and lots of guns and mags...not a threat to his neighbors or community. (Unless his neighbors try to break into his house when he's at home anyway)

I see a common problem with mental health of this country never being an issue.

We do not take mental health serious at all and every time there is a shooting like this at the core of the problem is a mentally ill person.

Mental health programs have been slashed to bone over the last 30 years, just as homeless programs. We as a nation don't get a s**t about the less fortunate

What's your solution though? Even if identified as being a bit, or a lot off, what probable cause exists to lock them up or infringe upon their rights?

Self protection/ preservation is the only answer I see as reasonable.

We’re projected to spend $203B this year on mental health compared to $32B in 1986. If we slash every government to the bone like we have mental health maybe we can balance the budget!!!!

Why is the solution to every problem government doing more for us? Ever consider that’s the problem?

1986 vs 2016? Equal dollars? Don't think so. If federal programs are not available then there is less availability for the less fortunate, a lot(majority) of people afflicted with mental illness do not have any other resources available to them. So let's consign them to the trash heap and give them absolutely no hope. Who the eff cares, right?

$1 in 1986 is approximately the same as $2.21 in 2017 due to inflation.

https://www.dollartimes.com/inflation/inflation.php?amount=1&year=1986

(Had recently done a comparison for 1980 vs 2017 for something at work, so was already familiar with the link.)

And no, we should not toss those with mental instability to the trash heap. Know many with various levels of mental health problems. Most want and seek help. Unfortunately there is not a magic treatment that fixes the problem. We all have issues... Some just have more. It's painful to see friends and loved ones that are deeply affected.

Not sure what gun controls or mental health programs are gonna do to prevent this. Right now it’s just a fad to shoot up some place. Just like protesting the anthem (which I’m all for one’s right to do so, but it is a fad). I think we’ve established a culture of hate, selfishness, intolerance, and misunderstanding. Maybe it’s always been that way but that’s essentially the problem. Sure there are a ton of people with mental health issues but all the hate between everyone is the fuse that’s setting them off.

In the same period GDP has roughly doubled, federal budget has roughly doubled, entitlement programs have nearly tripled and expenditures on mental health have increased more than 6x.

You can argue if it’s enough but clearly we’re not slashing mental health spending. Perhaps those on the government dole can start showing some results with the obscene amount of money we’re pouring into their programs? By your account the problem is getting worse not better.

Air Force failed to pass on details as to the Bad Conduct Discharge. Those details would have flagged him from being able to legally purchase the weapons.

True about the AF and law but.....if someone wants to obtain a gun illegally they will. Even if this guy didn't have a gun he could have still carried out this attack with ieds, arson, and or bladed weapons.

It's almost impossible to prevent an intended murder...all one can really hope to do is stop the murderer when the attack commences.

Dude was court martialed from the military from assaulting his spouse and kid. And still bought a gun afterwards Assault and anything resembling dishonorable discharge from the military should be red flags. I'm fine with the right to own guns just think there should be a fine line between right to bear arms and right to commit mass shootings as right now there isn't anything there.

Read @awbuzz post above...the laws are already setup to not allow him to buy a gun but the Air Force failed to report his discharge. If they had reported it as they should have, there would have been red flags.

Well, its actually worse than what you guys are saying. Sure, he shouldn't have been able to legally buy guns, but murders are committed nearly every day by people who got a gun illegally. Still, hard to justify adding new laws if we're unwilling to enforce the existing laws.

To that point, the real reason this is a sad story is that the guy shouldn't have been on the street. The standard sentence for his crimes of beating up his wife and cracking the skull of his infant kid would have still had him in prison right now. So while we can argue if he would have gotten a gun illegally, there is no denying several dozen people would be okay today if he were sitting in prison. The Air Force said they are sorry, but what about the legal system?

The same crowd that would vote to repeal 2a are the same general crowd that would promote early parole for offenders convicted of homicide, shootings, and stabbings...Because everyone deserves a 2nd chance.

Except for legal gun owners...because they are just scary dangerous and nobody needs AR15s to defend themselves. At most a six shot revolver should suffice instead.
