Dodd modestly said years later he didn’t want to get beat. Always with a smile. He was generous to other coaches to the very end. Truth is the trip to Mississippi was grueling and difficult and there was no fast way to get to Oxford and back. A trip like that would not have fit easily with Tech’s classroom or practice schedule. It was a strategic calculation which also took into consideration the lack of financial benefits from such a game.
Dodd promised little johnny vaught the home gate every other year if they would just play in ATL. It was about money. Dodd would lose money going to MS to play and little johnny would make more every other year than he would make in MS. Still, he wouldn't do it. Dodd didn't have to play him, so he didn't. little johnny finally got his revenge in 1978.

Philo can pull the ball down and do some running himself. He's proven that. I don't think he's one-dimensional, but the thing about Haynes is he's really good at faking handoffs. He keeps defenses off balance not knowing who's got the ball or who's getting the ball. Philo may develop that instinctive ability in time, but a healthy King adds something extra to the running game. Trouble is that right now Haynes isn't 100%.
This is what I see. (I like both of these guys fwiw) . But when Haynes runs he can seperate from the defenders. He pulls away from guys and that makes the D extremely nervous. Philo can run in the same way that Trevor Lawrence could. He can pick up yardage at times and gash you even when you have 4 verticals and your backs turned. or maybe elude a defender and get 6 or 7 positive yards. It's valuable. But HK has speed that is rarely seen in QB's. Maybe Joe Ham and Justin T. had equivalent speed but I'm not sure about this. This guy just smokes people and has speed that jumps out at you.

You know...I get the feeling that there are people on here who would complain if Philo plays the whole game Friday and beats ugag. They would complain that King would have been better. I wish King was healthy but he is not.
Eh, nobody's going to do that. I imagine both QBs will play, and both will contribute in their own best way. Wienke will see to that.

Frankly I’m a bit worried that we’re gonna try running with King and not have much luck (as we haven’t in almost half our games) and find ourselves in a whole early before correcting. Like Syracuse.

When Philo’s in I want to throw first because I’m not sure we can execute straight running plays all game against UGA.

Haynes tan for two long touchdowns against cuse right? Not sure that’s how we got in a hole . Our defense was Swiss cheese that game

Haynes King ran for 67 yards on 6 carries with 2 TDs.

Everyone else ran for 3.2 ypc or less on 18 attempts, including a three yard loss on fourth and 1 when it was still a two possession game.

It wasn’t the MOST run-happy play calling (37 total rush attempts at 2.8ypc against Louisville annoys me the most while meanwhile we threw for 300+), but our commitment to the straight running game when none of the RBs were getting anything helped dig a hole that was just too deep.

Not at all. I don’t care if Reggie ball was starting Friday night if we win, I get Haynes is not healthy.
But I don’t think we can win with Philo against uga with where he is and what we have currently. with more experience and more talent around him yeah let’s go. But with this current roster a 75% King gives us a better chance . He may be worse than that , I’m no medical expert but I do know that this will be the best defense Philo has played against to date . Nobody seems to be asking what if we play the whole game with Philo and it’s bad …. Where do you go from there ? play from behind with nobody to turn too. I would imagine playing Haynes/Philo combo gives us the best chance on Friday night and feel like people are gonna be upset with either plan . The reality is what’s the best strategy to beat the mutts?! I don’t see us Winning without some kind of contribution from King just like the Miami game .

The really good thing is that the coaches know who can do what and who will be available and for what portion of the game. Back in mid-season, this was all happening and we dropped a couple of games - one we likely drop anyway. Now, they have it figured out pretty much. I’m good, but beating UGAg this season was always a very long shot.

Sometimes the game plans works (FSU, Miami) and sometimes it don’t (Syracuse, N C State as far as run game is concerned). We’ll just have to see what they cook up. But Key has stated that they KNEW the 2 QB system would be defended differently by N C State, which is why Philo got 80% of the snaps. I’m sure they have a decent idea how UGa will defend us. Whether we can execute an offense that defeats that defense….we’ll see.

So, I've been thinking about this. What if you line up HK as QB, JH as one T and AP in the other T. Then, when they load the box for the HK run, the switch positions and AP moves to QB and HK as T. Then you have 10 in the box and AP throwing the ball with Singleton on the outside doing a straight post, or the TE peeling out like NCST. Then Philo lines up at QB with HK as wing and motion into HK as QB with only 3 in the box. Me likey.

I'd put up with a whole board of b!tching and complaining if that were the result. Wouldn't hurt my Internet feelings in the least.

Several entities got revenge before that, including Tech players against Bud Carson.

We ran for 112 yards in the game. If you take out King, we rushed for less than 3 yards per carry. We punted a ton. We spent most of the game trying to make a running game work that wasn't going to work.

Our pass defense was terrible, and special teams hurt us, but we clearly walked into the game thinking were run over Syracuse, and they sold out against the run, and we took way to long to adjust.

Our offense was a major reason we got in a hole against Syracuse. All three phases of the games let us down. Offense was the most frustrating, because they dared us to pass and we wouldn't

Its a creative idea, especially if HK has a fractional ability to throw the ball after a handoff from Philo. However, dogs are not going to be surprised by it and will absolutely have defensive shifts planned for it. I don't know how I feel about HK being a potential blocker in that situation either.

The best surprise will be for HK to play possum and then pass accurately on running down’s a couple of times over the top (hopefully to wide open receivers), that will blow the run game wide-open for him and the rb’s

I have to respectfully disagree. Philo can hand off to Jamal or he can throw it anywhere on the field...2 dimensions. As far as Singleton...if he had held on to 2 key passes at the goal line...much different game. So he giveth and he taketh
This is why I don't like these kinds of discussions. It changes from discussing strengths and weaknesses to arguing about which player stinks the most. Philo has some limitations, which have been apparent while he has played. He is a very good player, I am not saying that he isn't. Handing the ball off is not the same as reading the defense and knowing when and/or if to hand the ball off. Handling the mesh requires a certain amount of trust and understanding with the RBs. There was an issue in an earlier game with King and a newer RB in which the ball was fumbled during the mesh. Philo hasn't had a year of offseason workouts/Spring practice/etc. to build that understanding with the RBs. King in earlier games has moved people around on the offense before the snap because of what he has seen from the defense. King makes decisions more quickly. Philo will likely make decisions more quickly after more experience. It isn't just ability to throw, or ability to hand the ball off. King currently has some limitations because he is injured. Philo has some limitations because he is a true freshman playing at a new level with limited experience at this level. Both are capable QBs. Both have very high upsides.

We should trust the coaches to make the decisions on who or what combination gives the team the best opportunity to win. I am certain that posters will be upset and blame the coaches for playing the wrong QB if we lose. There will probably be some who argue that we would have won by a larger margin with a different QB if we win. However, I don't believe there is one person on this forum who could make a better game plan than our coaches are going to implement, no matter if we win or lose. I don't believe there is one person on this forum who actually knows what King's injury status is, nor what Philo's limitations are. If there is someone on this forum that knows either of those things, the should not be posting it. We fans should be supportive of whoever takes the field Friday night win or lose.

For a while, until they adjust, which UGAg has the personnel to do.

One of our issues, IMPO, is our WRs don’t get good separation vs. man coverage so our QBs have to throw into small windows. That makes it tough for a guy like King with a gimpy arm. They can just dare him to do so. However, our WRs do much better against a zone, finding seams pretty well.

All this means if selling out to shutting down our run requires man coverage on the back end, we cannot easily break it. If it means zone coverage, we can have more success since a zone typically takes extra personnel to run, limiting personnel committed to stopping the run.

So, if UGAg has DBs who can be successful in man coverage, it will be tough sledding. I believe they do.

Absolutely. The QB situation is very complicated, and I trust our coaches to figure it out. If they call a perfect game, we still might lose.
They've made some very astute decisions in the last two. I trust them to do the same Friday.

Amen to this. In no way am I saying Philo sucks . I think it's pretty Clear that when Haynes is in there his Leadership and decision making helps the offense . AP will certanly get there. but what makes this running game go is the reads the QB makes and right now AP12 just hasn't had the time and reps to do what this current roster does best .

They did however give up 226 rushing yards to UMass. They have weaknesses this year. This isn't the team from 2021 and 2022. I think this team isn't even as good as the team from last year. We might be able to run the ball for 300 yards. (Not saying we will, just saying that it is possible)

Last year at the end of the game I was in the stands with the belief that if we recover the onside kick that we would tie the game. This year, I believe there is a decent chance to win the game. There is also a decent chance to lose the game, but the chance to win is much better this year than it has been since at least 2019.
