As I recall the discussion, the team was missing one piece to be a very good team. The others asked Leo if it would make sense to give up on that season and make trades to get what they need for the next year. Mazzone said, you never give up on right now while you have an opportunity. That it might look good on paper to get the one piece you need for next year, but there are no guarantees that you will still have everything else. You might get that one piece, but then lose several other pieces that are giving you the chance this year.

Like you said, tomorrow may never come. Philo could transfer. Philo could get hurt. (I hope neither happens) GT could have as many OL injuries in Philo's RS Senior season as GT had in 2015. Philo could get drafted after 2026, and not play in his RS Junior nor RS Senior year. There could be a pandemic or terrorist event that stops the entire season his RS Senior year. If the best chance to beat the mutts is to start Philo, then he starts. If the best chance to beat the mutts is to play Philo a few plays in the game, then he plays a few plays. If the best chance to beat the mutts is to play King and use Philo only in an emergency situation, then they will do that. What you do not do is forfeit the mutt game in order to keep open a chance that Philo might play in 2028.

Then the injury bug decimated the team and we only won 3 games. 2016 was 9 wins, 2014 was 11 wins. Let's say 2015 was a mediocre 10 wins with that lineup, that's 30 wins in 3 years. Name me a period when GT pulled that off? Instead we ended up with a lackluster 23 wins, right that the Chan line of mediocrity & our fanbase lost their minds. Exactly. We have a chance to win 8 games in the regular season with a win against the mutts. How often has that happened? We’ve won at least 8 games and beaten ugag 3 times in the last 23 years. A win Friday would solidify this season as one of the better seasons we’ve had in a quarter of a century and be another big building block in Key’s rebuild. Saving Philo for the future? Friday is the future.

Bottom Line is , Our Best Chance to beat a good team . like we did vs Miami. We need a effective running game and King gives us the best chance to do that . our offense with Philo taking 80 % of the snaps and scoring 1 offensive TD against a bad NC State team isnt the plan i would use . the way UMASS is running on Georgia is encouraging

We weren’t having success with King running the ball against State - every time he was in they had everyone on the line. He’s too one dimensional and people know it now.

Honelsty would have been a completley different game if he hits that TE releasing (and they don't call lineman down field) for a TD in the first series. That would have been a 20 ayrd downfield throw that likely would have told them they can't sell out on the run.

When we ean the spread option in acc that had 2 divisions each year we played 1 cross division game. We won 100% of those games. There is a reason Dodd's name is the name of the coach of the year throphy.
Theirs Hiesman, Dodd, Broyles, Rice and then there are others.

Yes. People forget that Grant (not Hyundai; Grant) Field was close to the biggest stadium in the South in those days and other teams were glad to schedule home games with Tech to get the payout. Too bad that isn't happening anymore.

I don’t disagree but it wasn’t much better with Philo until the last drive where they played 2 man prevent and the safeties turned their backs . I could argue Philo is 1 dimensional. If not for Eric singleton we would have been in a world of hurt .

Dodd modestly said years later he didn’t want to get beat. Always with a smile. He was generous to other coaches to the very end. Truth is the trip to Mississippi was grueling and difficult and there was no fast way to get to Oxford and back. A trip like that would not have fit easily with Tech’s classroom or practice schedule. It was a strategic calculation which also took into consideration the lack of financial benefits from such a game.

I have to respectfully disagree. Philo can hand off to Jamal or he can throw it anywhere on the field...2 dimensions. As far as Singleton...if he had held on to 2 key passes at the goal line...much different game. So he giveth and he taketh

Philo can pull the ball down and do some running himself. He's proven that. I don't think he's one-dimensional, but the thing about Haynes is he's really good at faking handoffs. He keeps defenses off balance not knowing who's got the ball or who's getting the ball. Philo may develop that instinctive ability in time, but a healthy King adds something extra to the running game. Trouble is that right now Haynes isn't 100%.

You know...I get the feeling that there are people on here who would complain if Philo plays the whole game Friday and beats ugag. They would complain that King would have been better. I wish King was healthy but he is not.
