Keeping Santucci

The defense got better so naturally the new defensive coordinator has to get credit. But who gets the blame for us going from one of the best teams in the country at forcing turnovers to being bottom half? Our defense was helped immensely by us having a d-line rotation that featured exclusively 4th, 5th and 6th year players. Would like to keep Santucci for the sake of continuity, but if he leaves, I won’t miss him blitzing safeties from 10+ yards deep.

Do you understand why safeties are blitzed from depth?

Who else would get credit if the defense improved? We were fundamentally sound for the most part of the year, tackling drastically improved. Santucci will command a big job one day and we are seriously lucky to have him.

Helps to disguise coverages for one. It also puts another man in the box if the offense runs the ball. We did this a lot in downs that were run or pass situations.
Correct. The safety at depth is unaccounted for in the pass pro. We’ve been successful more often not with safety blitzes. It’s not Santucci’s fault Brooks takes poor angles and misses sacks/tackles.

GT defense has been bad for 20yrs. To say they naturally got better is insane take. This is the first time in a long time we looked organized and fundamentally sound, so why shouldn’t the DC receive credit?

Tenuta was here 2002-2007. It’s been 17 years since the D has been fair at best. Wow.

What we need is to get him some good players in the front 4. Looking at the Draft rankings on ESPN, both kennard and Ivey are ranked as 2-3 round prospects at DE/Edge. If we can get/retain that type of talent, it will make his job much easier

I thought at the time that Collins's biggest mistake was to let Nate Woody go. I understand that he "wanted his own coaches" or "wanted to clean house" or all the other silly excuses that were given at the time. If he had kept Woody and listened to him (unlikely, I know) then our D would have been much better and for years. His work at Army has been absolutely fantastic, especially given the size restrictions for the academy. And his recruiting has been excellent. That's why he would have given us a good D at Tech. His schemes are built around three man fronts with smaller, faster DLs and aggressive LBs; i.e. the kind of players Tech has been able to successfully recruit for years.

Ah, well. I reckon he'll stay with Monken until he decides to retire now.

I really hope Santucci stays to help build the program. He needs a year or two to recruit his players on defense. He has done a good job in his first year. Hope he can be appropriately compensated, has a good relationship with the staff, likes the working environment, and wants to stay in Atlanta. Not sure about his family situation but that can be a major factor on his decision. I feel really good vibes about our current staff. A real plus if we can keep them.

Santucci did a good job and I hope he stays.

But the most important thing is having a superior head coach, because they will go out and find good assistants. Key found Santucci. If Santucci (or any other assistant) leaves, then Key will replace him with another good coach.

Coaching turnover is pretty normal. It can be frustrating because it seems to undermine momentum. But momentum seems to be a thing of the past. Every season the team is reconstructed anew.

This is a good point. There seems to be very little momentum carryover year to year now.

In the case of someone like Santucci he would have to evaluate how staying at GT versus leaving for another place furthers his career goals. One would think that he aspires to be a head coach and if that's true then would taking a DC position at Miami get him closer to that goal? It could potentially be more money. But what I'd wonder if I was in his shoes would be what the DC position at Miami specifically under Mario Cristobal does for him. I honestly don't know what the answer is though from the 10,000ft and absolutely biased view I think coaching with Brent Key who comes from the Nick Saban and George O'Leary tree might be both more instructive and more advantageous based on the connections of that tree. Does Mario Cristobal have a tree? Oddly enough he also was an OL coach and assistant head coach under Saban at Bama (I hadn't known that, thank you ChatGPT). He coached with Schiano, Butch Davis, and Willie Taggart.

So yeah, my question if I'm in Santucci's shoes when looking at my current position versus any other offers is which one gets me closer to my next goal.
