i mean he was visibly hurt tonight. hard to hold that against him when he couldn’t run
And that inherently is the problem. Passing the ball with accuracy and good decision-making is the basis for the QB position. A qb HAS to be able to do that. His legs were taken away last night and it left him useless against a team that had been taken advantage of by EVERYONE else they played. We don't need an "athlete" at qb. We need a QB that is athletic. QB FIRST, then have the ability to extend plays if needed or run a keeper.

people saying this makes no sense. legs are part of your game. even more so at the college level. he was a far cry from good but calling him useless last night is way over the top when we’ve seen the alternative

funny thread to look back on
Last night didn't change the opinion I had of Sims at all. The absence of a good backup qb doesn't absolve Sims of his shortcomings at all. It is more of an indictment on the staff for not recruiting better QB'S in here. I put this on the other thread and it was clearly illustrated last might:

Sims lacks the ability to pass the ball with any bit of consistency and that is what's holding GT back. Because he couldn't run, VA didn't respect his passing ability and went all out against the run or blitzed and there was nothing we could do.

running is part of the qb position. this comment makes no sense my man. he is inconsistent as a passer but i think you watched that game with a pre formed opinion because he was not useless. that’s just piling on

You still have a triple option mentality. "But look at him run though". A lot of our fans have been conditioned to thinking qb running stats are equal to passing. We need a qb that can run TOO in certain situations, not a qb that if he can't run, we're toast. I was in the stands last night watching this go down and it was painful. Painful and cold.

telling me of all people on this forum that i have a triple option mentality is absolutely hilarious when i’m ignored by half this place because i’m not a johnson/option fanboy

i’m not saying running is the only aspect of the position but you’ve assumed that. no point in arguing when you’re arguing with imaginary talking points

If all he has are legs, because he isn't a passer, then he should be a wr, db type. He isnt a rb because he is soft. He is a poor excuse for a qb simple. He has proven nothing to the contrary. U think in yr 4 the light is going to come on?

This is not the triple option. This is not the triple option. And one more time for the people in the back. This is not the triple option. Running ability in a QB is an added bonus. A QB HAS to be able to consistently make good decisions and deliver the football accurately. QB rushing yards do not absolve the inability to fundamentally pass the ball, which is what the position requires. You saw with your own eyes last night. You saw this. This is football. There will be injuries. Tech is not the only team with a hurt QB. But we are one of the few that has one that needs to be replaced if he can't tote the rock for us because his passing skills are lacking. This is a real thing we all need to accept. It's okay to be honest about our team.

idk. we’ve seen enough flashes to see there is something there.

also idk i get that many of us have been giving gibson grief, myself included, and that’s making everybody feel a little looser with what they can say but calling a kid a poor excuse for a qb seems a bit over the top and seems like you are just here to **** on sims not discuss football.

go jackets.

He would get injured as a WR. Has had injuries every year. I will be surprised if he is still here next year. We will likely have a new staff and does he want to start over here with a rebuild coming. I would hope he can graduate. He should be close after this spring. He will likely go somewhere that guarantees he will start. G5 or FCS. We sure need him to be 100% to have any chance of winning this year.

Not hardly. I am basing my judgment on how the young man has performed. He came to tech highly recruited and was tabbed the man. Showed flashes his FR year of what could be. Two years later, he hasn't developed mentally at a fast enough pace and is still playing like a fr. So i gave the guy 2 years to improve. He hasn't and i moved on.

I would never frame it that way. "Poor excuse...." I think we should acknowledge that he isn't the answer based on facts from his performances and stop there. It's okay to say he's not the guy, because this is collegiate sports that we're all invested in, but I'd watch the way that's delivered. I'm brutally honest, but I'll never get personal.

Jeff Sims is a paid athlete. Amateur and d1 football aren't in the same universe anymore. Saying someone is a poor excuse at anything isn't personal it is factual. Honesty in our pussified society is too often mistaken for something it isn't.

Sims is not a good QB. He is currently #101 nationally in QBR and #13 of 14 in the ACC. Last season he was 84th nationally and 12th of 15 in the ACC. In 2020 he was 101st nationally and 13th of 15 QB's in the ACC.
He's a QB that shows flashes every so often, but is never consistent in being 'good'. He's still the best option we have had the last 3 seasons - but that says alot about the team and QB recruiting and coaching.

Gibson did not look like a P5 level QB last night.

Sims was definitely not 100% last night, but he was also almost completely ineffective when he was in the game.
Until he was injured and taken out GT had 24 snaps for 81 yds, 5 1st downs and 0 points.
Keep in mind that in our one offensive scoring drive by Gibson GT had 9 plays, 3 1st downs and 70 yds.

The 2nd half was partly a **** show just due to field position. GT started inside its own 10 yd line 3 times and 2 other times at the 20. Outside of the blocked punt GT had horrible field position the whole second half.

Our redzone offense has been a sh*t show all season. We have 3 redzone TD's in 6 games against FBS opponents. a 13 yd pass to Jenkins against Clemson. A 18 yd run Sims run against Pitt and a 18 yd pass to McCollum against Duke. That is it for RZ TD's. Of course we only have 6 TD's in 6 games against FBS opponents. This is just a really bad offense. It starts with a poor OL (one of the worst I have ever seen at GT), along with a RB and WR groups that are not as good as previous years and a below average QB room as well.

Dude u were the one referencing his legs and how important they are? Maybe we're dealing with multiple personalities here?

cmon man stop the trolling. qbs don’t have to be in an option offense to bring value with their legs. even just evading sacks is important as well as being able to move the pocket. the day and age of the pocket statue is over.

I have referred to Sims as a Coach Killer. He is that guy that has so much potential that you keep investing in him hoping that potential will eventually turn into performance. Unfortunately, it never has. Oh sure we have seen flashes but never the consistency required to be a winner at the D1 level of college football. I've seen this many times in my 70-plus years of watching football. I think we would be best served at this point to support whoever we trot out there. I would definitely give the other 2 or 3 guys riding the bench a look as well. Gibson will improve some but with our offensive line, it would take a Michael Vick / Lamar Jackson-type athlete to move the offense forward. Unfortunately, we don't have that so we better figure out how to maximize what we do have.

Go Jackets!

it’s 2022 college football. qb ability includes rushing. you will not see teams going far in their conference or into the bowl season without a qb with good legs

I agree that running matters, but I think for Sims it takes him from an awful QB to a below average QB. He's not good at pretty much everything else required of a QB. He runs so well that he can start for a Div 1 team.
