Please forgive me if I'm wrong. I was under the impression that the Bama 3-4 was primarily the more aggressive 1-gap specifically because getting the personnel necessary to run 2-gap (even at Bama) is too difficult at the collegiate level. They do, however, run more aggressive corner back schemes that take advantage of superior athleticism. Again, I may be mistaken, but that was how I understood it.

I do agree with the rest of your point. We MUST run a scheme that maximizes our potential and strengths. That is what I think the great coaches are capable of, and what I hope we are capable of.

I believe having two legitimate threats on the inside will open up our defense. It's incredible how one additional playmaker on the inside can make the rest of the defense look better. This is on top of the fact that our back four may be the best we've seen in some time already.

bama plays a ton of 2gap too...sure like any D they can call aggressive sets...but they rush 4 alot and just man up and beat you so they don't expose the backend to same way we would have to run alot of cover 3 shell...bama is in 2 deep man alot...when they had that huge DT Mount Mckinnley or whoever...they 2gapped alot

Yup, it is a whole lot easier to play agressively on the edges when you don't have to bring 6 to get pressure. I understand why CTR was hesitant early in games to bring the CBs up. If we were bringing 4, the QB had all kinds of time for double-move routes to develop etc. That can be dangerous. Hopefully this year we won't have a soft belly on defense and we can break some contain in the middle on the pass rush. If that happens, our guys on the edge will look like super heroes. It all starts rigiht in the middle on defense. It always has and it always will.
