I think you have to assess things position by position and coach by coach. Take stock of what you have, how it can be improved, enhanced and made to be more productive. Things are not totally screwed up. There are some good things to continue to build on. Our special teams has shown improvement and with Butker we have a weapon that will give us an edge in kick offs and field goals. The defense is showing improvement. Still not where it needs to be but with Roof at the helm I look for continued improvement and getting us back toward the standard of tough, physical defense Tech has shown in the past especially when Roof and the Black Watch D were on the field. The offense is where we have the furthest improvement to make. Vad leaving ends a chapter where we thought we had a dynamic play maker running the offense. As it turned out he was not that guy. Now we have to hope that Thomas, Byerly, Matthews or someone else can take over and be more of a play maker. The Offensive line has to be more coherent and play with more fire and determination. Our receivers need to continue to develop we have some talent there and need to get them more involved as play makers. The running backs are adequate but no one has really stepped out to be the go to guy. Cook and Owens need to work hard to develop these guys this off season and get the best guys out there. They are two coaches that need to get it done or move on along with a couple of others. I would like to see Johnson appoint an offensive coordinator and give that individual more input into the game planning and play calls. We need to vary the offense to include more pistol, diamond and true spread along with the triple option. If we did that well, we would be unique and I think attractive to more skill type players. CPJ needs to step back and be more of a CEO type of coach. Roof needs to be the assistant head coach and be just as visible as Johnson with the media, alumni and the general public.
In summary we need to maximize our existing resources, prioritize areas of greatest need and formulate an action plan to address those things to the fullest extent possible during this off season. We can still have a good football team and a solid season in 2014. All is not lost.
Go Jackets!
