Next year is going to be the make or break year for Collins tenure.
Bill Connelly has pointed out that if a staff is going to be successful somewhere you almost always see it by year 3. Now, if you want to say Collins' first year was Year 0, then year 3 is next year.
Anything less than 6 wins next year and I simply will have no faith that he can be successful here.

The bigger issue right now is the defense, not the offense. The defense hasn't improved anywhere in 3 years under these coaches. Frankly, to my eyes they look worse. You can blame that on the players if you want. But if you are going to say that it is an issue of experience, then you should see improvements - even within a season. We are not seeing that at all.

They are among the worst P5 teams in every single defensive measure. A well coached team may simply lack the talent to make plays, but will at least look coherent in how they play. I don't see that at all with the defense. It really looks like they have no idea what they are doing out there alot of the time. To me that is simply bad coaching.
I agree with 100% of this post. I am not sold on our DC. I was concerned when he came in that he didn't have the experience to make the adjustments he needed to be able to make at this level. It doesn't appear he does, but I'm just a fan watching from the sidelines.

Exactly!! He put players in a position to fail doing things they couldn’t do. Never understood why he didn’t run some sort of run based spread the first couple of years. The logic of “getting more reps for everyone in our system” doesn’t make sense when Graham was gone after a year anyway. Not sure if he was too stubborn or didn’t want to give Johnson’s players any credit for what they were good at or what. Square peg doesn’t fit well in a round hole. Just a really bad call in my opinion.
And it p.o.'s me even more the number of "fans" that are willing to throw away multiple season for the hope of landing a kid in the NFL someday. Cripes.....the percentage that go on is about 2%......it is asinine to focus on that, especially at a school like Tech.

From AJC article:
Key player

Miami receiver Charleston Rambo scorched the Jackets with seven catches for 210 yards and a touchdown. He became the first Tech opponent to gain 200 receiving yards in a game since 2005. Tech has allowed an opposing receiver to gain at least 168 receiving yards in each of the past three games.

Isn't CGC supposed to be some DB savant? This is pathetic.

Good for you. No seriously, I say that with no malice. I'm glad you're a fan. But the coaches are part of the team too. When you ridicule the staff, that's not supporting the program. Criticism and ridicule aren't the same thing.

Many of us put our money where our mouth is, so you're in good company.
Sorry coaches get paid players don't

No,it wasn’t. At no point, despite the gifts they gave us, did we capitalize. I’m surprised they did not throw more, the 4th down stops were more gifts. Our offense was atrocious outside of jahmyr and mason. It wasn’t close, more like guessing how we could look a gift horse in the mouth. What game were you watching
I get that it's a disappointing and frustrating loss but we led in the 4th and were never behind by more than 3 points. That's the definition of close.

Pull up all the yardage stats you want the game is based off points not yards. We were only ever one Gibbs breakaway or scoop and score from winning. If you can't acknowledge that you are delusional

This might be the most toxic mindset anyone can have. If you can’t question authority, what’s the point?

Mason got the ball 11 times for 104 yards
Gibbs got the ball 13 times for 139 yards
Sims ran it many times, hard to decipher from the sacks at the moment. But the coaches do certainly "let him run"
1 & 2: But they are seldom on the field at the same time so that the D has to watch both and Sims has a choice on what to do with them. What we need is a regular diet of two back sets with both players on the field.

3. Imho, they don't. When Sims runs it is usually because his protection breaks down. He seldom gets a chance to run a QB sweep or do a double option out to the perimeter. Not to mention draws. And it is obvious this isn't part of the regular O. I look back at the UNC game and ask why.

One other thing -- Bedford says on the radio he should be quicker to tuck and run when he sees a big hole. That's another thing that I would expect to get better with live game reps.

Dude, how many reps does he need? He’s been the starter for almost 2 full seasons now. In case you haven’t noticed there are QB’s making plays all over the country with way less live game reps. We just lost to a QB who just got the job last freaking week! Sims is lost. I’m not saying it’s all his fault as the coaches need to coach him up but at some point in big boy sports you either have it or not.

Hard to believe they gave us 3 fumbles (one for a TD), two failed 4th down tries, a missed 40 yd field goal, and a returned two point conversion, and we still couldn’t beat them.
Cogent point. For those who find moral victories in close losses, Miami did everything they could to hand this game to us but we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

As a very minor aside, the 2 point conversion attempt that was returned by JT was an impressive play. Even more impressive was their center who tried to tackle him at the goal line. incredible effort by a lineman, no matter what team he played for and even if he was a yard shy of making the play. How many linemen even try to make that play.

Bill Connelly did say, on average, year two was where he saw the bump in his stat profiles. I found the article on Bleacher Report, but it’s not talking about when to expect a turnaround—at least, not directly. This is probably what you’re remembering: https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2016/12/27/14088090/new-college-football-coaches

A Boston College blog did cover it though—and there are examples of 4, 5, 6 years or more. It’s not scientific, but they showed their work a little.

We should have seen a defensive improvement by now—more trends than we’ve seen so far. Our players have gotten bigger, stronger and faster (at least one of stronger or faster, sometimes both, depending on the position). Sometimes, it’s tackling high. Sometimes, it’s hitting the wrong hole. Sometimes, it’s thinking someone else is covering your receiver, or biting on the run when it’s a pass.

Yep, #60 was impressive. Have to applaud that effect regardless of team.

Those fumbles didn't just happen - the Jackets' defense caused at least two of them, and had a hand in all three. The 4th down tries failed because the defense stopped them cold. The conversion return was a great play by Thomas. If we debit, we should also give credit where credit is due. They didn't give us this stuff - our guys took it.
