Nobody is dumping UA stock because of any single teams apparel deal. There is tons of money to be made in the shoe game and UA whiffed on the one big name they have on their roster with those god awful Chef Currys. UA is a clothing company trying to break into the shoe game without a signature line that can sell. People don't have any confidence that they can make something people want.

This is not really true though. This sorta gives a pretty good rundown of what adidas has done right, and what UA has done wrong.

Under Armour notably entered the basketball footwear market in recent years to capitalize on their most marketable asset Steph Curry. Unfortunately, basketball shoe sales have suffered a precipitous decline in the past few years, and Powell doesn't believe any one player can bring it back.

"Not much working for them at all in footwear. They are up against very difficult comparisons in basketball, and their running [segment] appears too soft because the emphasis is on performance and that is not where it needs to be," said Powell.

It may be wise for brands that have invested heavily in basketball endorsers to utilize them to promote or establish products that are selling well, like sportswear, a segment Under Armour has been determined to penetrate. Adidas recently announced a sportswear line, being promoted by James Harden.

Appealing to the female consumer has also been a struggle for Under Armour and will be a crucial hurdle for the brand moving forward. Powell believes Under Armour can be successful with women, but it depends on the product.

Under Armour is an interesting company. I attended a small recruiting event for the their company and they apparently do very little research and development. Their business model is to primarily acquire the technology of startups and turn it into products. This isn't a new strategy and a lot of huge companies (Google, Apple, Medtronic, etc.) do the same, but those companies also do internal R&D on new technology to stay ahead of the curve. Just bringing it up because for a company perceived as innovative, they really rely on the development of others a lot. It was a massive turn off for a room of engineers looking for exciting employment opportunities. Adidas could be a better fit in that regard too, specifically with the new SPEED FACTORY going up.

I bet the Chef Curry's were the beginning of the end.

It Steph Curry last shoe that do so well mixed with Plank political comments.

Curry 1 and 2 sold extremely and was one of the better performance basketball shoe on the market behind the Adidas Crazy Explosive

The Tech gold thing is interesting. A month ago I was on the MiAdidas site (It's part of adidas website that lets you customize some apparel) and there was a Tech Gold option. Made me wonder if it was something GT related. Looks like it might have been.

I like our "Georgia Tech Gold" Pantone 874 better than the "Tech Gold" on the adidas site.
