Yeah, I miss the fun old days. But we can put leading with your head on the pile of stuff that was done way back when that we now know better of:

TBH, it was facemask into the numbers, head up. It was never, in my experience, lead with the crown. That was always taught to me as dangerous to do.

That game was the positive side of "GT gonna GT".

As we always do every year, we lose to a team we shouldn't (probably multiple teams this year), and we beat a team we shouldn't. Enter: #4 Miami.

If anyone still questions the value of Haynes King, well, you just saw why he's easily the most important player on this team. We literally played Haynes King with half of his tools, and we beat the #4 team in the country. Haynes is more than just the stats he produces...he's the heartbeat of this team. Reminds me a lot of Jose Alvarado on our basketball team a few years ago.

Granted, the defense probably played its best game of the year, so it wasn't just the King and the offense that won this game. Miami's offense is one of the best offenses in the country, and Cam Ward is one of the best QBs in the country. Miami pretty much got shut down. Big kudos to the fighting Santucci's putting it all together this game. If the defense can play like this the rest of the year, and Haynes King can get healthy....well, the day after Thanksgiving could VERY interesting...

Aaron Philo. That guy just has "it" in QB terms. This is what I wrote about him in his recruiting thread:

The most impressive thing for me about Philo is not his ability to throw the ball (that's college level...which is a given with QBs that are college recruits), but watch how he manipulates the secondary with his eyes and head, his composure in the pocket (nothing seems rushed), his movement in the pocket to buy time, and his anticipation. On top of that, he has the ability to create yardage with his legs...which is important for QBs in this era of football.

He's very advanced for his age in terms of overall QB development.

GT is seeing that in real time on the field. The guy doesn't look like a scared freshmen out there. The clock in his head has slowed down. If you watch Arch Manning at Texas, he plays with an eerie calmness in the pocket that belies his age. Well, Philo is a TRUE freshmen doing it. The future is bright at the QB position for GT.

DB has always been a deep position group for us. Even in the Paul Johnson days. It was always a scheme and coaching issue for us. It's crazy how deep into the position group we had to go in the Miami game, but our DBs played great. Now if we can get the same depth at the other position groups.

This is definitely a signature win for Key and this program. The trick is to not have a letdown against NC State which would undue some momentum. If GT wants to be considered one of the better football programs, we have to not only beat the Miami's and UGA's when it means something, but also beat the NC State's and Syracuse's with regularity.
I saw that during the game on a couple of Philo’s big 3rd down conversions, he calmed looked at a different receiver then turned his head and threw to the wide open man, it was beautiful. I am so excited about our future with him!

This post made me nostalgic. I miss scalpers! Not the kind our great-great- great-grandfathers dealt with but the spirited entrepenuers who used to roam the campus before kickoff with 2 fingers up in the air. The friendly give and take between buyer and seller, each negotating in a cordial but businesslike manner while understandably trying to gain leverage on the other, unrestrained by government (nay even corporate) interference in the market place, emdodied the very capitalistic nature that makes this great country what it is and was exactly what Adam Smith had in mind when he spoke of the "invisible hand". :)

Haha, I do too. When tickets went electronic, that pretty much ended it.

My last true scalper experience was interesting. I was with my wife in the cesspool in 2015 for UA v u(sic)ga. (My wife is an Alabama alum). A guy had tickets printed on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper with a QR code. 10 yard line, 10th row or so (Red flag #1) He wanted $200 apiece and I talked him down to $60 apiece. I think I’m a savvy negotiator but this was (Red flag #2). He then guaranteed the codes would get us in (in hindsight Red flag #3). The tickets scanned in fine so I paid him and we were on our way… shortly before the game starts, someone shows up where we were with much realer looking tickets…

I suspect the ‘scam’ was getting legit, nosebleed solo tickets and then repackaging them as better tickets on paper (using legit QR codes but labeling them as better seats). Fortunately we found unoccupied seats close by since it was miserable weather. And u(sic)ga got destroyed that day!

Not sure it will matter. Philo's getting comfortable in the pocket and used to the faster game speed. I do like the 2 QB approach the way we run it. Basically tell the opposing D what play you're running. They can't stop it & lose their minds.
At some point they will stack the box when HK is in. Will be much tougher to run. He will need to be able to throw it to keep them honest. Also they will try to disrupt Philo with disguised coverages and blitzes. Philo had one nice scramble for good gain Saturday. Miami either didn't or couldn't stop either guy Saturday.

Those DB's for Miami that chased down JH on his long run were fast too. Not too many can catch Jamal.
PRE KICK OFF
Watching thier coverage team verses ours
Miami ALL look like they were grown for NFL
verses
Ours look like they as a rag tag group qualify as a unit which is fit for purpose.

I thought they defended HK pretty well given how one dimensional (beyond 10-15 yards) we were with him in. They did bring an extra defender in. Several times he just erased their angle, or plowed through for tough yardage. Credit to Faulkner for scheming a running game that gave us a blocking advantage, and to King for his grittiness and ability to make defenders miss. If GT fans want to know why a half healthy King is better than a fully healthy Pyron/Philo, you saw it against Miami. King's ability in the running game opens up so much of what we can do. Also credit to the RBs who had to run for some tough yardage.

They will not worry about any throws past ~20 yds from King unless he can he prove otherwise, thus cutting their coverage zone. Will make it very difficult for him to be effective I think. Definitely will need more snaps from Philo in my opinion.

I think this is what is so frustrating to the Miami fans (as far as I can tell from their boards). It was easy to see that HK was not in there to throw the ball. There is nothing as demoralizing as knowing what your opponent is going to do and then not stopping it, We just bullied them. That's a bitter pill to swallow. I have seen it done to us more times than I care to remember.

I think Philo is actually more elusive than Pyron is. I don't think Faulkner has fully unleashed Philo yet. Philo isn't as quick or fast as Haynes, and we won't see many 20+ yard TD runs from him like we do with King, but he's a plus runner. I just don't think Faulkner wants to put that kind of wear and tear on Philo with King not fully healthy.

Yeah, the sideline reporter was interviewed on XM and was asked about King's injury. She confirmed from her meetings with the coaches, and this may not be new news but I'll share it anyway, that the only thing that still pains him is passing downfield. He can't re-injure or injured it further by running, which is why he played at all. Also said rest is the only thing he needs to heal in the near term.

From what I've seen from Philo, I say give him the NCSt game then bring King back for uGA. We'll have to play it conservative from here on out either way.

On the subject of tickets… I noticed that too.

I do want to put a plug in for buying directly from GT. Yes, I know we’re supposed to do that anyway. But I have noticed a shift this season. Buying from StubHub is more expensive than buying directly from GT. This is the first time I recall that ever being the case in recent history.

Example - club level tickets were available for purchase against Miami early on Saturday directly from GT for less than $200. They were over twice that much on StubHub (counting fees).

Second example - I picked up section 106 tix against NCST directly from our site for $85 apiece. They are almost double that on StubHub when adding in the fees.

I don’t recall seeing GT release unsold premium tickets directly before. And StubHub fees continue to get more draconian every year (50% markup for buyer, plus seller’s get screwed too).

Edit to add, there still are 3 pairs of 2 left in section 106 on our site. $85 apiece is awesome value.

I think it was theorized somewhere earlier in the season, but GT is definitely only releasing a portion of tickets at a time in order to increase ticket prices and reduce the drop in value on the secondary market.

I'd been monitoring all the ticket sites (including GT) for the ~2 weeks before the game. The $60 upper north showed completely sold out from the GT ticket office, so I ended up looking at more expensive tickets in upper east/west. I think it was a few hours before the game GT released whole sections at the top of upper north, which had previously shown unavailable.

I also had significant issues purchasing tickets from GT. Even less than 3 hours before the game they refused to let me buy 2 tickets from an island of 3 in various sections of the stadium (I understand not wanting to leave single seats, but that close to kickoff, they should be able to over rule the system defaults) . Ran into another couple at the game with the same problem. Gave up on the tickets I wanted, tried to go with 2 in a long line of available seats and then the website wouldn't process my order.

Ultimately had to walk up and buy tickets from their ticket table at Calloway Plaza 30mins before kickoff, of course, I'd been there 2 hours earlier and they refused to help me/take my money then because they didn't "open" until 2 hours before kickoff (website says it should be 3).

TL;DR- GT artificially boosting ticket prices by holding back inventory, and buying GT tickets can be a frustrating cluster.

This is total speculation. HK shoulder is more than a deep contusion. He may have rotator injury which might take surgery or a long recovery. We will not know until after the season. They sure have been hesitant to throw it with him in there. I sure hope I'm wrong.

Yeah, just look at the 3rd (and 4th) down conversion rates. They were like 3/14 while we were 9/14. Yikes.

I think Philo and a healthy Pyron are comparable in the running game. It was clear in the ND game that something was going on with Zach's lower body that affected his ability to run. They were grabbing him after 2 steps, which wasn't the case when he was running last year.

I'll say again what the sideline reporter said. She said, from what our coaches told her, he doesn't need surgery just rest.

Just relaying what she said when asked. She could be wrong or maybe they weren't forthcoming with her. Who knows.

So, long story short, we don't know sh*t again.

I posted this SI article in the recruiting thread, but I feel everyone will like the article containing comments by the recruits who were in attendance at the GT--Miami game. I really like their comments about the energy from the crowd and the photos with the U down hand signal. Several of the recruits will be in the 2026 and 2027 classes.

My only scalping experience was also in Athens for the Bama game, albeit in 2008. My then wife and UGA grad decided a late night game was beyond her stamina level.

These were good old heavy bond paper tickets and I found a couple of mutts that wanted them badly. Three hundred in cash and by the time we got home it as 31-0.
