They got away with leading by the crown of the helmet by doing so without launching. By the rules, I imagine they can do that, and it seemed they were taking advantage of the sort of loophole and doing it on purpose. Just plant your feet and head butt the opponent, and as long as you refrain from "launching", you get away with it. Legal or not it's a dirty tactic, to be sure. You can't legitimately blame the refs for a loophole in the rules. I blame the loophole, not the refs. As long as you're not initiating forcible contact, you can lower your helmet into the other player. The "initiation" is open to interpretation. If they're stationary, it won't be called (or shouldn't, by the rule).

Tech got away with one very blatant (IMO) pass interference (actually defensive holding) early in the game.
All of this is hard to understand for a guy who came up when the main tackling and blocking technique was to lead with your head. I mean, really, how else are you going to be sure you hit them right? And all that with a suspension helmet; none of this padding stuff.

Well, glad that got taken care of. But my first reaction in watching games is still to want to see guys putting their grills against each other.

I count 12. This is not a problem.

I was actually surprised how many miami fans there were in most sections of the stadium.

Very nice that our fans (and Band) were able to drown them out for most of the game!

Guess it also explains why my strategy to wait 'til the last minute to buy cheaper tickets off the secondary market backfired 🤷‍♀️

If you lead with your face mask like you’re supposed to, and how you should have been taught, that is not a penalty. They’ve revised the “crown” of the helmet back to its original definition. Targeting now is spearing with forceable contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless player.

The first one was not called targeting because he did not initiate forceable contact, he just lowered his head. More dangerous for him than the runner. The second one wasn’t ruled targeting because he made contact with his face mask, not the crown of the helmet. The third was called targeting because he led with his crown and launched into Cooley.

The one that knocked Haynes out of the game was absolutely targeting and they never reviewed it on the field. Travesty.

Assuming that King is still nursing the injured shoulder, it will be interesting to see our offensive game plans for the next two games. Our two QB rotation was a novel approach and caught Miami by surprise. I don’t think they fully adjusted during the game. You know NCState and the dwags won’t be caught flat-footed.

Spot on and clearly presented with the perfect amount of passion. You are good!

After unc injury i asked "will haynes be ready to go at HC. Answer - he will be ready -"ride or die with ga tech".

Saturday night after game i asked did game push back recovery and how will he be for ncst. Answer - no delay and with bye we are fight on way for ncst. Then discussion shifted to which bowl. In my guess -king should be ready but philo has earned some reps. He sees the field and his last pass to singldton across middle was behind him. Wont happen in next game.
.We are dangerous.

On the subject of tickets… I noticed that too.

I do want to put a plug in for buying directly from GT. Yes, I know we’re supposed to do that anyway. But I have noticed a shift this season. Buying from StubHub is more expensive than buying directly from GT. This is the first time I recall that ever being the case in recent history.

Example - club level tickets were available for purchase against Miami early on Saturday directly from GT for less than $200. They were over twice that much on StubHub (counting fees).

Second example - I picked up section 106 tix against NCST directly from our site for $85 apiece. They are almost double that on StubHub when adding in the fees.

I don’t recall seeing GT release unsold premium tickets directly before. And StubHub fees continue to get more draconian every year (50% markup for buyer, plus seller’s get screwed too).

Edit to add, there still are 3 pairs of 2 left in section 106 on our site. $85 apiece is awesome value.

This post made me nostalgic. I miss scalpers! Not the kind our great-great- great-grandfathers dealt with but the spirited entrepenuers who used to roam the campus before kickoff with 2 fingers up in the air. The friendly give and take between buyer and seller, each negotating in a cordial but businesslike manner while understandably trying to gain leverage on the other, unrestrained by government (nay even corporate) interference in the market place, emdodied the very capitalistic nature that makes this great country what it is and was exactly what Adam Smith had in mind when he spoke of the "invisible hand". :)

Oh, I thought the invisible hand was the one that held Miami on Saturday while GT administered the butt-kicking.

This game was the 2nd in a row where I had to tell multiple people to move because they were in the way and I couldn't see the game. Lots of people just hanging out on the railing at the portal. It's annoying, but tells me we are doing better filling seats.

Definitely a team win. The guys played hard and with heart today. I am glad they didn't allow a comeback after that effort. Efford tackling Ward and injuring himself showed the effort the guys played with today. So glad for the win for the players and coaches.

Any further word on Efford's injury?

One question which can get a factual answer (I expect lots of speculation otherwise); is whether Efford came back in after his injury.

(I missed game due to working trails in the mountains; guess I'll have to do that more often. But went into town for dinner and got the great news Saturday night when I got reception back.)

That game was the positive side of "GT gonna GT".

As we always do every year, we lose to a team we shouldn't (probably multiple teams this year), and we beat a team we shouldn't. Enter: #4 Miami.

If anyone still questions the value of Haynes King, well, you just saw why he's easily the most important player on this team. We literally played Haynes King with half of his tools, and we beat the #4 team in the country. Haynes is more than just the stats he produces...he's the heartbeat of this team. Reminds me a lot of Jose Alvarado on our basketball team a few years ago.

Granted, the defense probably played its best game of the year, so it wasn't just the King and the offense that won this game. Miami's offense is one of the best offenses in the country, and Cam Ward is one of the best QBs in the country. Miami pretty much got shut down. Big kudos to the fighting Santucci's putting it all together this game. If the defense can play like this the rest of the year, and Haynes King can get healthy....well, the day after Thanksgiving could VERY interesting...

Aaron Philo. That guy just has "it" in QB terms. This is what I wrote about him in his recruiting thread:

The most impressive thing for me about Philo is not his ability to throw the ball (that's college level...which is a given with QBs that are college recruits), but watch how he manipulates the secondary with his eyes and head, his composure in the pocket (nothing seems rushed), his movement in the pocket to buy time, and his anticipation. On top of that, he has the ability to create yardage with his legs...which is important for QBs in this era of football.

He's very advanced for his age in terms of overall QB development.

GT is seeing that in real time on the field. The guy doesn't look like a scared freshmen out there. The clock in his head has slowed down. If you watch Arch Manning at Texas, he plays with an eerie calmness in the pocket that belies his age. Well, Philo is a TRUE freshmen doing it. The future is bright at the QB position for GT.

DB has always been a deep position group for us. Even in the Paul Johnson days. It was always a scheme and coaching issue for us. It's crazy how deep into the position group we had to go in the Miami game, but our DBs played great. Now if we can get the same depth at the other position groups.

This is definitely a signature win for Key and this program. The trick is to not have a letdown against NC State which would undue some momentum. If GT wants to be considered one of the better football programs, we have to not only beat the Miami's and UGA's when it means something, but also beat the NC State's and Syracuse's with regularity.

Our DB's played well Saturday but we need to recruit some bigger safeties with length to matchup with the elites as shown in the ND game.

Yeah, I miss the fun old days. But we can put leading with your head on the pile of stuff that was done way back when that we now know better of:

Has anyone posted number of snaps by King and Philo yet? I haven’t rewatched the game yet (I was at BDS), but it seemed that King was always in on first down and stayed in unless we got in second and long. So Philo had a mix of run and pass plays. If we picked up decent yardage on first down, King stayed in. If I’m not mistaken, the drive that led to the Lane TD was mostly on King’s legs.

I’ll hang up and listen. Thanks guys. I’m still euphoric from rushing the field at age 64. And I didn’t break or pull anything. 😂
