Looking back: this is the proudest I’ve been of a LOSS since the 2014 ACCCG.

Not saying I’m accepting ANY MORAL VICTORIES. That was what COFH last year was, we’re past that. But as fans we can still be proud of the fight and effort that was shown.
I think what is also important is the "loss" will not negatively effect recruiting. FOMO is still fully engaged for recruits

Venting aside, I’m getting over my anger at what happened and I’m starting to feel more sad about the current state of college football. Politics surrounding the playoff are driving the **** like we saw Friday night. There were always single subtle things in the past, but for that crap do go on for 5 minutes to end a game and send it to OT is just ridiculous. The purity is completely gone and it’s just a weird game vying for money. Say what you want about the NFL, but this kind of crap doesn’t happen. Bad calls, sure. Strings of bad calls and no calls that favor one team on the verge of the playoffs, not so much.
This absolutely does happen in the NFL. The year the LA Rams won the Super Bowl with Stafford, they were constantly bailed out by the refs because the NFL had to make sure that the move to LA paid off and that they were driving interest in their shiny new market.

I’ve been thinking about this for awhile now. I am not a fan of conspiracy theories. They are a refuge when life doesn’t make sense, or disappoints, or is unjust, and they give us an easy explanation. That’s not to say conspiracies don’t happen. It’s just that I believe they are extremely rare, and when they do happen, the truth always eventually comes out.

This is also not a criticism of your post. Nor am I saying you may not be correct. My explanation is not as elegant and has messy, difficult to define parameters.

Let me use this analogy. In baseball a winning pitcher who is known for his control, and who can paint the edges, always seems to get the benefit of the doubt on close ball/strike calls. Because they have a winning record the judgement of the umpire is unconsciously influenced. Now if this pitcher also happens to be on a dominant team during their dynasty years, confirmation bias is in full force. An unknown pitcher on a struggling team will never get many close calls in their favor.

It’s possible that the refs were paid in the Tech/uga game but that would be a huge scandal and, I believe, would break wide open with even minimal amateur investigation. I think it’s more subtle than that. And messy. Georgia has been a dynasty with an historic winning streak. The SEC has long been touted as the best conference. Some of the biggest monied interests are wrapped up in the fortunes of teams like uga. Their coach on the sidelines constantly works the refs. Major TV contracts and millions of viewers all have their psychological well-being directly tied to a Georgia win. Tech is not favored to win and Vegas and the betting mob say so. Georgia doesn’t lose at home. Everyone who counts seems to want them to win. The pressure on even the most professional referee is to “call it like you see ‘em” but every thing in the constellation of influencers around this game are screaming, “We see Georgia pulling out a win in this game and anything that upsets that narrative is a grievous mistake.”

Now that uga has “pulled out another victory,” the confirmation bias is perpetuated and deepened and will be that much harder to dislodge because the universe has spoken.

Thus we get screwed by the refs and it’s actually no one’s fault.

The refs made mistakes but it isn't a cash grab lol. The PI they called on uga in OT was on an uncatchable ball.

I agree with this. They didn't TRY to screw us it's just they folded under the pressure.

and the refs didn't lose us the game. you go 1/7 on 2pt tries you deserve to lose.

Im still heartbroken over the game. Just keep thinking of how if we just made 1 or 2 less mistakes and if the refs did not cheat we would have had a legendary win.
REFS DON'T CHEAT.

holy crap they are human they make mistakes. sadly many of them hurt us but the refs don't have any dog in the fight.

No time, in the 150+ history of college football have REFEREES been found to be INTENTIONALLY altering games. There will always be rogue referees on occasion, but anyone thinking that there's a mass conspiracy to influence the outcome of games from the NCAA or the SEC or ESPN needs to have their head examined. Only official scandal EVER was the 2007 NBA Tim Donaghy scandal. I think if Donaghy had tried to pull that off today, he would have gotten nailed pretty quickly. Too many high definition camera/angles and too many analytical tools to see when a ref goes against their tendencies, especially in big games where there is a lot of money being bet. Throw in some AI that may start analyzing calls and there will be very few ways to hide putting your finger on the scale.

They were literally watching replays of the fumble. When they do they they watch every angle. How can you miss that obvious a targeting while watching. And before I get the “they weren’t reviewing targeting” excuse, the refs can change any reviewable portion of the game while watching a replay. They do it all the time with spots, fumbles, etc. It was intentionally let go.

I agree with the premise, but the NFL has the same problems. Just watch any game with the Chiefs....refs have kept them in more games than I can count.
