You're right. Smart did get outcoached (a LOT) by Key...for 3.5 quarters. Last I checked, a game is 4 quarters and whatever else comes after until the last whistle is blown. Were there some egregious calls? Yes, debatable fumble, tipped passed that should have negated the endzone PI call, and a holding penalty that our DL was clearly horsecollared...amongst some others. However, you're the visiting team going into hostile SEC school, did you really expect any different? Those are things beyond Key's control. What you can do is coach the things you can control.
I get it is tough to get all the calls playing at a hostile SECheat school. The issue I have with this is how many times do you have to properly execute a likely game winning play that is taken away before it is well beyond "expected" favoritism.
1. We caused a fumble down near the goal line that wasn't called giving them a first and goal (inside the 5 IIRC) that they scored on. If the fumble is called properly, that is one more score they would have had to make up with much less time and more yards to go when they get the ball back. Therefore, we likely win.
2. The tipped ball DPI call (that wasn't even DPI if it wasn't tipped) was on a perfectly executed 4th down stop by our D that gave them another 1st and goal inside the 5 that they scored on. Once again, if the play is called properly, that is one more score they would have had to make up with much less time and more yards to go when they get the ball back. Therefore, we likely win.
3. The clear targeting play on Kings "fumble". If called we have 15 more yards and a fresh set of downs. Even if we don't score to put the game away there, we take more time off the clock and force them to have more field to go to get the tying score. Therefore, we likely win.
4. The play before that our receiver that caught the ball was CLEARLY grabbed and held before he got free and made the catch to make it 3rd and short. If that is called we get 10 yards and a fresh set of downs so the targeting "fumble" play would have not been called. Again, even if we don't score to put the game away there, we take more time off the clock and force them to have more field to go to get the tying score. Therefore, we likely win.
While I am sure I could come up with more clear examples, there are 4 pretty likely game winning plays that were taken away to add to the tons of other BS missed blatant holding and other penalties negating properly executed plays that effected the game as well. I have never seen a college game get sooo much universal widespread criticism for multiple critical blatantly bad game changing calls in favor of one team. This was well beyond "expected" favoritism.
