This is one theory. The other side of this is ga was going to need two scores to win with only 5 minutes left. If you got them to turnover on downs on either of those two possessions we win the game. Go for the knockout and stop them scoring. You give yourself three chances to win the game:
Stop drive 1
Score on your own drive
Stop drive 2
You do any of these we win. We gave away chance 1.

I say all this believing the team was prepared last night and played their heart out. The coaches had a heck of a game plan. I’m excited in the direction of the program.

I hated the 3 man rush as it was happening. As others have mentioned our DBs were completely depleted, why put more of them out there? Double down on your DLs who were all two deep still and go after Beck. Force a mistake, if they did we would have won.

I was replying to this comment:

I hate prevent defenses and agree about the psychological effect of switching from aggression to passive mode. But we use the word “analytics” a lot. And we see many respected and well paid coaches who do this. So it does make me wonder what the math(analytics) say about making this move. The data must say it’s the right thing to do. After all, the data can’t be wrong can it?

How about hitting the FG that ultimately wins the game without OT. Never underestimate the importance of the kicker. Scott Sisson and Harrison Butker say hi.

I really hope Key and coaches were on phone last night and this morning letting upcoming Big time recruits know what we were able to do with the talent and resource disparity vs ugag and how we will be able to dominate them if they jump on board. Key is taking 30th ranked recruiting classes and battling top 3 recruiting classes to their limits. Imagine what he can do with 20s and teen rated recruiting classes. Think would be a great recruiting pitch. Let’s take back this state!
This is one of the things I reflected on.

As someone else posted 10 pages ago or so, even with a win, the net result of that game was better for us than it was the dwags. Potential recruits saw them come out flat and without answers. They're reading Reddit and seeing how the majority of neutral fans think UGA needed the refs to bail them out. Meanwhile, they saw in us an ascendant team. One that is continuing to grind and play hard. One that is on the rise, is competing in the biggest games - and that they can make a real impact with from day one.

I think this game does a lot for us on the recruiting trail, and I, too, hope that the coaches are capitalizing on it today.

Additionally, since in this day and age recruiting now applies to your existing team: had we won this game, I think there's a good chance that Haynes King would declare for the draft. And I would have been happy for him (and still will be, if he does). But...

HK is a Tech man, through and through. It's easy to forget that this was only his second season at GT. He has now been to the cesspool and seen a second perspective of what this rivalry means firsthand. He's felt the agony of defeat...twice. And this one was a very bitter pill. He now has unfinished business. I wouldn't be surprised to see King decide that not only is it a good idea to come back and gain another year of experience, hopefully uninjured - but also circling the date on the calendar to take care of that unfinished business.

This loss sucked. But the more I think about it, the more I think the downstream effects of it include a lot of net positives for us.

I can guarantee to you that throughout all GT football facilities, 44-42 will be posted as a reminder for the next 365. Motivation for recruiting, film session, therapy, chow hall, weight room, indoor and outdoor fields and anywhere else that players and coaches will see it. I feel bad for the 15 teams we'll face next year.
This. Leaving the tweet below here with no further comment.

Had another friend tell me tonight...
UGA used to view the tech game as a warm up or practice before the SEC championship , one whee the 2nd and 3rd stringers would get a lot of playtime.
Not anymore, we kept their first team in the game and wore them down the entire night. It's been a long while since we could do this.

Not only that, we gave their opponent the game film on how to scheme them on offense.

You're right. Smart did get outcoached (a LOT) by Key...for 3.5 quarters. Last I checked, a game is 4 quarters and whatever else comes after until the last whistle is blown. Were there some egregious calls? Yes, debatable fumble, tipped passed that should have negated the endzone PI call, and a holding penalty that our DL was clearly horsecollared...amongst some others. However, you're the visiting team going into hostile SEC school, did you really expect any different? Those are things beyond Key's control. What you can do is coach the things you can control.
I get it is tough to get all the calls playing at a hostile SECheat school. The issue I have with this is how many times do you have to properly execute a likely game winning play that is taken away before it is well beyond "expected" favoritism.

1. We caused a fumble down near the goal line that wasn't called giving them a first and goal (inside the 5 IIRC) that they scored on. If the fumble is called properly, that is one more score they would have had to make up with much less time and more yards to go when they get the ball back. Therefore, we likely win.

2. The tipped ball DPI call (that wasn't even DPI if it wasn't tipped) was on a perfectly executed 4th down stop by our D that gave them another 1st and goal inside the 5 that they scored on. Once again, if the play is called properly, that is one more score they would have had to make up with much less time and more yards to go when they get the ball back. Therefore, we likely win.

3. The clear targeting play on Kings "fumble". If called we have 15 more yards and a fresh set of downs. Even if we don't score to put the game away there, we take more time off the clock and force them to have more field to go to get the tying score. Therefore, we likely win.

4. The play before that our receiver that caught the ball was CLEARLY grabbed and held before he got free and made the catch to make it 3rd and short. If that is called we get 10 yards and a fresh set of downs so the targeting "fumble" play would have not been called. Again, even if we don't score to put the game away there, we take more time off the clock and force them to have more field to go to get the tying score. Therefore, we likely win.

While I am sure I could come up with more clear examples, there are 4 pretty likely game winning plays that were taken away to add to the tons of other BS missed blatant holding and other penalties negating properly executed plays that effected the game as well. I have never seen a college game get sooo much universal widespread criticism for multiple critical blatantly bad game changing calls in favor of one team. This was well beyond "expected" favoritism.

Hope they are still sore, tired and banged up for the sec championship game. I don’t like ‘em. Never have. But hearing their fans boo whenever one of our players was on the ground, seeing Smart out on the field complaining after almost every play, hearing the announcers say over and over that uga was a lock for the playoff, and the repeated dirty shots by dwag players, I want their season to end disappointingly.

Im going to wear Tech gear to church in the morning. I'm going to continue to have my truck identified by the large GT in the back window. Nothing will ever make me not cheer for this team. We have more known coming back than they do. Next year, us being up wont be a surprise. And when we win in the dome, it will be expected...as will the field storming.
Wore my GT gear today at got several compliments at 3 different stores and that it was a great game.

I too will continue to do so.

I’m not going to get hung up on a single play. Missing a short field goal is as easy as dropping a short pass, FGs just cost more.
Not aimed at any one player. Just pointing out what an important position it is and having an outstanding kicker can make a huge difference in close games. It should be a priority recruit IMO.

Venting aside, I’m getting over my anger at what happened and I’m starting to feel more sad about the current state of college football. Politics surrounding the playoff are driving the **** like we saw Friday night. There were always single subtle things in the past, but for that crap do go on for 5 minutes to end a game and send it to OT is just ridiculous. The purity is completely gone and it’s just a weird game vying for money. Say what you want about the NFL, but this kind of crap doesn’t happen. Bad calls, sure. Strings of bad calls and no calls that favor one team on the verge of the playoffs, not so much.
