Fatal shooting on GT campus?

Just saw post on FB that there is supposed to be an ANTIFA demonstration tomorrow near the student center @ 4pm. STAY SAFE!!!!!

If that is true, GTPD should proactively call for SWAT/advanced authority presence. The only thing preventing ANTIFA from being officially a terrorist group is the naming. Their actions are there.

I agree with this opinion piece and think the way things are going civil war may not be far down the road.

I thought most of the protesters were not Tech students. That article is misleading at best. I also don't see a civil war in the future. The only thing I could see could be some slightly more organized left wing nut jobs and slightly more organized right wing nut jobs going after each other. But the media will only label one side as terrorists instead of both sides.

According to some of the interviews I've read and comments from students on Georgia Tech's facebook page and messages, they are insisting the vast majority of people in the protest were actually students. If that's true, its quite sad. Because IMMEDIATELY we knew Scout had called in his own 911 alert, written 3 suicide notes, was on video advancing towards officers while yelling to shoot him and holding a weapon. If folks are rioting when we know ALL OF THAT, that truly is a terrible sign. And from one of the supposed most elite educational institutions in the country no less. If 'smart' people act like that, imagine how easy the rest of the country could be set off.

Don't confuse "smart" with common sense. Most of the left wing nut jobs are considered "smart"

So here is a quite intriguing (bad word, but I can't think of another one) piece of information I just found.

That is a picture from GT Pride Alliance (whom Scout was President of) from exactly 1 year prior to the shooting. Note the purpose of that photo - to launch their support of the "Tech Ends Suicide Together" initiative. It was later that night (Sept 16, 2017) on the exact 1 year anniversary of this picture/launch (Sept 16, 2016) that Scout committed suicide by cop. This is truly a perplexing timeline. (On a side note, "Cat" (real name Andrew) on the front left with the hat was arrested in the protest for jumping up and down on a cop car trying to cave in the windshield. He is who you might see in some of the protest videos running down the street with a cop chasing him and then he falls.)

Just went to the Student Center to use the facilities - there are signs up on all the doors that it's closed with Buzzcard access only from 12:30pm to 7am. Think this is the reason why?
Just asked the desk in the student center - those signs applied to yesterday. They said they should have all been taken down.

You know, I really didn't want to read this thread. But somebody has to say this. I value this site because of the closeness of the community to GT. But I see an awful lot of disrespect that goes way beyond the pale going on here. Try to remember that a Computer Engineering student died, two GTPD were injured and a third killed a student. Those are communities I count among my family. Perhaps you don't, but casual disrespect towards them is not acceptable to me. I have three points here.

1. Scout wanted to be referred to as they. Do so. Take your opinions on the matter, and cram them somewhere that they don't show up. It is a very simple matter of basic decency and courtesy. I am not, it may shock you to learn, actually named IEEEWreck, but you don't think twice about addressing me as such. Were you to, say, refer to a divorced woman by her married name after being asked not to because you don't believe in divorce, you would rightly be considered a churl, and in polite company would invite any gentleman to effectively correct you. This is not different.

Allow me to be direct and to the point. One of the professors who made a huge difference to my skills as an engineer identified as a woman but did not begin her career that way. Pointedly referring to Scout as he in order to show spite towards their clear request not to also shows pointed disrespect to that professor, to Georgia Tech, and to me. It will not make us friends. I promise you I am not the only person in your personal and professional life like that. Basic decency is a better course.

2. The GTPD deserves our respect. An officer killed a student. That man is going to have to deal with some horrible aftermath that he absolutely does not deserve. Glossing over that officer's terrible reality with street corner lawyering disrespects his trauma and more to the point his mission and sacrifice to the GTPD. They cultivate trust and relationships with their community, and through patience and bravery manage to deal with all kinds of drunk idiots, giant ego administrators, and mutt fans. They are a shining example of what policing can be. They are entirely different from police in places like Ferguson, New Orleans, or New York. Comparing them directly is an obscenity. Defending them the same way is just a slightly roundabout obscenity. They do enough for us that we ought respect them and what they do to limit ourselves to expressing sympathy for the injured officers, and for what the third officer is going through.

3. Scout killed themself. That's a huge trauma to a large part of our GT community. Didn't your mother teach you not to speak ill of the dead? Whatever politics you feel invited to inject into this debate, why doesn't sympathy for the wounds of your community overwhelm whatever political feelings you have? GT athletes got this right- say your prayers are with the friends, family, and community. Anything beyond that, have the decency to keep it to yourself.

Like you I don't like wading into these threads, but in the spirit of decency and courtesy, I would like to offer that this post could still be interpreted by some as offensive. My uncle is a cop in New York. He is as good as they come. I do not think of it as an obscenity to compare GTPD to police in the locations you suggested and was initially offended you'd broadly categorize police in those locations as such. That was a very difficult pill for me to swallow.

But I'm not sure that it was your intention to bash others in the spirit of defending the GTPD, so I'll certainly give you the benefit of the doubt. The separate point here is "decency" and "disrespect" can mean different things to different folks. So I wouldn't take this thread as evidence that folks are intentionally or unintentionally disrespectful. There is a lot of context missing behind posts, as I'm sure this reply is missing, that can be misconstrued or misinterpreted by others. While I may have blinders on, I think the members of this board are generally respectful of each other. The ability to clearly communicate is challenged when there are topics that stir emotions, politics, school pride, etc together. So, while I don't think you intentionally meant to disparage my uncle, I would offer that perhaps others were not be intentionally disparaging or being disrespectful of those involved in this specific situation at GT.

I did use "him" in my post. However, it was not an intent to be indecent or to try to discredit his feelings. It was because "they" is a plural pronoun. It confuses me to read about multiple people doing something, when only one person is actually doing it. No disrespect intended, but there are three singular third-person pronouns in English: He, She, and It. Personally, I would consider "it" to be disrespectful when talking about a person. I was not, and am not trying to make a statement about anyone's lifestyle, or identity beliefs. I am only trying to use English in a manner that I can actually understand what I am saying.

Just to be clear. Your voice is the same as mine, an individual voice among many on this forum. If you don't want to hear my voice, or anyone else's, you may exercise the ignore feature. You yourself come across as pretty preachy yourself. Some may choose to ignore you. Ain't this forum grand?

Good day sir. (Was that respectful enough?)
