Defensive Change is on the way

I think we would have had a much bigger head start with offensive production, at the beginning of the year this year, if we had benefited from Bowl prep last year. Bowl practices hugely beneficial IMO.

Over the last few days I've noticed a few comments from some of our more knowledgeable posters and what looks to be a subtle shift in recruiting in the last two cycles that seem to point to a defensive change. Much like the Falcons defensive personnel it looks like Tech's focus is centering on SAs that were always described as hybrids or "tweeners". Given the majority of offenses Tech faces I like the idea of fast, agile "tweeners" roaming the back 7.

Question is what then becomes the base D? 4-2-5, 4-4-3, 3-3-5 or 4-3-4? Personally I like to see a 4-4-3 base set and scheme of it. Throwing this out there for y'all to ponder. I hope it generates a lot of discussion. I've always felt Tech should be a good to very good D programs and should be a bit unique as well! Just as we are on Offense. A specific identity isn't the worse thing :D

I believe one of the posters on here said that Roof is thinking of going with a 3-5 next year with more hybrid type LB/DBs and DE/LBs on the field. Makes sense considering the commits from the last two weeks.

This is going to be an attacking type defense with defenders come from all angles if I'm reading the tea leaves correctly. Looks like we're going to put a premium on getting after the QB. Gonna be fun to watch.

I'd be fine with a 4-3, 4-4, 3-5. Just have one or two big safeties that can play one of the LB spots in the 4-4, 3-5, so he can slide into coverage on slot guys , cover RB's or even drop back into an offset LB set where he's almost acting as the Strong safety but still in the box for the most part, I guess it's the same thing as when a safety lines up closer to the LOS but still behind the LB's. (Keanu Neal)

Follow up thought. I know PJ and Dan Quinn have been introduced but have no idea if they are close. Wonder if TR has sat down with DQ and talked defensive philosophies?

I've read this, but I have yet to see a source on it

Buddy Ryan's 46 defense, all about pressure on QB, used by Jets when beating the Colts, Great Bears D. Blitz every play, but may come from anyone. I wonder how it would work on today's spread offenses, seems like it would make reads hard.

the 50 defense that the Miami Dolphins used to run would be a nice thing to try also.

I think with all the spread option / HUNH we play against, and all these new hybrid type of players, we'll just call it 4-7. As in we finna play 4/7 on yo azz 24/7.

I am thinking with all these guys in this class and the talent we have that we need to come up with a nickname like Fort Knox - protects our Gold, you ain't gettin' in.

The Gold Rush would be a good nickname as well;)

Alignments are largely interchangeable and matter less than D philosophy and the Jimmies and Joes IMO.

Nicknames should be earned rather than contrived before being earned. Golden Tornado was earned. Black Watch was contrived (that D had some serious studs on it tho so don't misread me there). Most will disagree but that makes me favor the former over the latter.

Full disclosure - I'm also a bit biased against BW because it raised some players up, with visible symbols, over others in a team sport and I thought it had the potential to harm the feel of "family" on the team.

One of the problems I see necessitating a change in defensive philosophy is our talent issues on the interior d-line. I've been rewatching some games from this year, and we have nobody even close to Pat Gamble returning on the interior d-line for 2017. I really think Desmond Branch is going to be our best interior d-lineman next year. Adams is fat right now, Glanton is smallish and lacks technique, and, let's be honest, Kyle Henderson, despite what the gameday program might say, is 5-10 270, maybe. We are going to get knocked off the ball so bad next year, your heads will spin. And we will sorely miss Justin's ability to pass. After the crappy, injury-ridden season of 2015, Justin had his best passing year by far. I like what Coach West has done with our o-line in terms of pass blocking, but I can't at this time see Matt Jordan being able to get it done in this part of our game. One's only hope is that one of the redshirted freshmen will somehow master the option while being able to sling it like Justin did very adeptly in 2016. Not likely. One has to wonder if some of our former players who recently transferred foresaw this and bailed.
