When I was in school, I was on a NROTC scholly, there were many times I had to tap out of activities my friends were engaged in. When you have rules that dictate very important things in your life, you better damn well take them seriously. I have a hard time feeling sympathy for multiple offenders who've been given chances time and time again and keep doing dumb ****. Some people just can't get out of their own way.

Am I the only one here who thinks its ridiculous to kick someone out for using a product that is increasingly more and more legal?

No, you’re not the only one. Marijuana prohibition needs to end. It’s crazy to me that so many people glamorize alcohol while at the same time demonizing a less harmful substance. Hell, our fight song talks about drinking your “whiskey clear” and filling a barrel with 3000 pounds of rum! I’m not arguing against these things, just pointing out that we are decidedly not a school with a history of teetotalers.

Arguing about what the school/athletic dept does is fruitless. Until the laws of the state of Georgia change recreational/medical marijuana is illegal.

Others have touched on this, but I think you’re missing the point. Mills wasn’t kicked off the team for smoking pot. He was (allegedly) kicked off the team for continually smoking pot after being told he was going to be kicked off if the trend continued.

It honestly doesn’t matter if it’s legal or illegal or whether you think or don’t think it’s a big deal. I for one think that if a kid is meeting his team and school requirements then it should not be a big deal...but the school felt different.

The reality is that the kid (allegedly) was given multiple chances and warned what would happen if he continued to screw up...and he ignored them (allegedly). In that scenario I blame the kid.

Don't know if GTAA has an "alcohol" policy or not, but almost sounds like some would be more upset with Mills if he had broken the policy for a legal product than an illegal product. Regardless of whether they both should be legal or not.

True, but I wonder if the older crowd on here will change their tune when (not if) legalization comes to Georgia.
And honestly though, whether it’s legal or not really has no bearing on how we handle players getting caught with it, because a positive drug test has zero legal penalties. We can do whatever we want when a kid tests positive. Arrests, of course, are a different matter entirely.

As I am part of the "older crowd" my personal belief is to follow the law. As I've gotten older my philosophy on many things has changed so if I ever get a chance to vote on legalization then I will have to decide where I stand on that issue.

Where it is legal, is there a minimum age as with alcohol? If so, would he have been of age where pot is legal?

And, as some state, it isn’t addictive why could he not stop?

Not legal for anyone under 21 anywhere in the US that I know of. But legalization will happen for green leafy marijuana. THC oil, not without a prescription most likely. Concentrations of THC in oils are much higher than in raw green leafy form and are currently a schedule I controlled substance.

It is addictive (either chemically or in the mind) to some people - that is obvious. No way Josh Gordon throws his career out the window if it was not.

My opinion is that it is totally dependent on the person.

For example with alcohol, I know many who drink and handle it well - their personality does not change, or if it does, it mellows them out.
But with others, they become the Tasmanian Devil when they drink.

It is strange how different people will react (and possibly lead to dependence) with the same substance.

Nicotine is the same. Some smoke from time to time or socially and never become “dependent.” Others get hooked and can’t quit. It’s widely deemed to be addictive though.

Some people say gambling or porn are addictive and there is no chemical substance involved in either. So.....

I guess I am part of that crowd. I don't oppose the lottery, though I think Georgia and the rest of 'em ought to flat out admit the lottery money replaced but did not augment state education money; I do not oppose alcohol, just not in a car, please; and know diddly about marijuana though the argument has been made to me the intent of pot is a fast high. I do not know. But whatever the merits of legal/illegal of any of them, we do not get to pick and choose the laws we follow. It ain't a cafeteria line. And if your institute has those rules, then as the Stinger says about somebody else saying it, in a different way, that's what the law is. Seems to me Mills picked pot over Tech. Next man up.

ALL marijuana is currently a schedule 1 substance (which is flat out insane, as it’s higher than cocaine and meth amphetamine, besides the fact that there are proven medical uses). And those THC oils are no different than the flower, btw, and anyone who has flower can easily make them in their own kitchens. The states that have legalized so far haven’t differentiated between flower and oils, so expect that to be the model whenever they do anything federally.

Only one? Unlikely. The question isn't the rightness or wrongness of the policy, but the SA's unwillingness to follow a clear policy after multiple warnings.

To me it's pretty simple, you have discipline in your organization or you don't. In this case, the SA was given an opportunity to change behavior but refused to take responsibility for their part of the agreement...that to play football here you must do these things. I once had to fire a young engineer for coming to work stoned on meth. I hated doing it, and we called his family (with his permission) and sent him to rehab for three months. He later in life sent me a letter thanking me for being tough on him, stating that we'd saved his life. Sometimes that best love can be the toughest to give.
