CPJ Coaches show

Then the ol' ball coach has some s'plaining to do. He for danged sure was worried about it after Saturday's game, and I don't think it improved in two days.

Did he say after the game that TQM cannot throw the ball? In the radio show and/or the press conference he said that TQM can throw the ball well and does so in practice. Basically saying that he has the physical ability to throw the ball well and he isn't worried about that particular aspect. He wasn't pleased with missing an attempt at wide open receivers. He wasn't pleased with blocking assignments. He said that the WRs and the ABs played pretty well and that the other positions had issues.(I believe that only leaves QB, OL, and BB)

Since you are implicating that he contradicted himself, what is a conflict between: The offense played awful: and : The QB can physically throw the ball well?

He never said that TM cannot throw the ball. He has said many times that he CAN throw it and has done it decently enough in practice, but that he had a poor game throwing on Saturday.

I agree with you. I was asking why others are saying that there is a contradiction between TQM can throw the ball and the offense is playing awfully.

@RonJohn that was not me... but I only saw one specifically due to field of view on the TV screen. At the game I am focusing on the ball versus the total field.

TQM has got the yips, plain and simple. It's clear from some attempts that he has adequate arm strength and mechanics although adequate is probably the best I can say about them anyway. Hopefully, this first game worked things out mentally. If so, massive improvement in the passing game is possible without improving mechanics. I think for him the error that translates to is in weight transfer. His stride gets messed up and hips not square -- throwing off either foot and not transferring his weight from back foot to front foot which is where power is generated. He might be focusing too much on what his arm is doing instead of his feet.

I think the simplest, and best, answer is that CPJ said what he meant each time.
Both before and after the game, CPJ said that Marshall can pass the ball well enough for us and has shown it in practice.
After the game, CPJ said that Marshall passed awfully.

Translation: Marshall has shown in practice that he can pass the ball well enough for us but did not show it satisfactorily in the game. He had a bad game.

Bad Translation: If Marshall's game performance was awful, then he can't throw it well enough for us. Therefore, every positive word from CPJ about him must just be hype for the sake of the player.

the key word here is in" PRACTICE", doing it in practice is not the game, there are lots of guys who choke in skills-- like a bball player shooting good free-throws in practice but not in game

I was wondering how someone saw that. I don't go backwards and forwards like you do with the film, so I appreciate you doing that and your insight. When watching the game at BDS, I usually pay attention to the ball. I can notice if a receiver breaks wide open on a long route, but I can't watch with enough clarity to notice every receiver and whether they are open or not. I usually only notice the ball and have to watch the replays to understand better what happened.

If he said that it is in direct conflict with his offense and the tactics he has explained and used in the past. When he catches the safeties cheating up, he will throw deep. And "have to" will have nothing to do with it. And the question remains: can we hit it?
Is it just when they cheat up or when they are actually crashing down and making plays?

Coach was more upset that his Senior QB did not READ THE HOT receiver on 4 plays. That's called a "missed assignment " .

Coached called the pool passing series for QB- so he could just practice looking off safety and then throwing the called play. Just like practice but at full speed and Qb did ok. GZeeat coaching imo.

I think Qb is going to be fine- just like shooting at a swarm of Teal ducks - pick out one and See, Aim, Fire. Once u hit one and trust yourself it gets fun.
I
Warriors are not trained, they are born; but he has got to " instinctivly make right reads and look off safety" . When he gets its, it could be very very good.

See, stop, pop = we were spoiled by JT who in 14 carried the team last gs and vt.

I don't know if that double block was intentional or not...but it was beautiful and consumed 3(!!) ASU players.

Double team block was part of the play. I believe he said another assignment was missed but it became a mute point since the double team block blew up the D. There was a multi yard push on that block which gathered up other D players and cut off backside pursuit.

What he said was that if we aren't any good at it we won't be throwing it very much. Seems pretty logical to me...but he's also not stupid. 3rd and 16 constitutes a passing play.
Actually, I think twice in the last 10 years I recall 3rd or even 4th and 15 and he ran the QB draw for a first down. You can do that when your best athlete is at QB and not Aback. But I understand, and he will still throw deep to make the safeties get back where they belong so he can run the rest of his offense.

I would never expect a good coach, and Johnson is a very good coach, to hammer any player publicly. He's not going to say he has a QB who can't throw a lick. He wouldn't even say it with Tevin Washington. Or Josh Nesbitt. Neither of whom could throw the proverbial lick, though they did other things. Even given that it was clear to me that at that moment he had no confidence we could pass the ball. If he has more now, good. I don't but that doesn't really matter. I've spent 10 years watching his QBs try to pass, and Thomas is still the only one he's had. (Byerly maybe, except he was on the bench.)

My observation and watching one of his chalk talks is if they cheat up he will try to straighten them out and, obviously, score if he can. But he doesn't want LBs skating and corners squeezing in and safeties creeping up. (Sounds like a country music song, doesn't it?)

Like it. How bout the song to a George Jones tune?

Also "NO SKATING, SQUEEZING, OR CREEPING" would be a nice sign next to uga dorm.

Screens and smoke routes worked because they gave Bebe and Dwyer the ball in space. The screen is a bit like the sprint draw in that it relies on deception and can make the RB a target if they don't have burst and vision. It doesn't seem like a good fit for Benson; he's better suited going downhill -- e.g. that quick motion FB toss and the belly. Mason seems a little shiftier space, and that stuff might work for him. Camp looks like a Transformer, we should force everyone's littlest corner to try to tackle him a few times a game.

He didnt seem all that cheery about TM on his weekly presser, basically saying we won't throw deep if we dont have to. But that he has seen TM in practice and knows he can do it. I am buying the motivational theory.

If he said that it is in direct conflict with his offense and the tactics he has explained and used in the past. When he catches the safeties cheating up, he will throw deep. And "have to" will have nothing to do with it. And the question remains: can we hit it?

Maybe look at what he actually said before declaring a direct conflict with previous comments.

In response to a question about TQM feeling better after a few easy passes in the second half CPJ's response was:
If he throws it better then we we'll throw it more. I'm not going to throw the ball, you know, to make anybody feel better. You've got to be able to complete them. I thought that he got some confidence going in the second half. The first drive I'd told them at halftime... I was a little upset in the locker room.. and I told em we're gonna run one play until we score and in the second series I wanted to throw the ball to see if we could go down the field throwing the ball. You know I didn't feel like we were ever in any danger of losing the game, so there was things that I was trying to work on to do that.. And to their credit they were able to get down. Wasn't always pretty, but we had enough place to throw the ball and I think they went 97 yards or something so they got it down the field

In response to a question about TQM throwing the ball too hard when he has wide open recievers he said:
You know I think that sometimes that everybody makes such a big deal out of it that it probably makes him more antsy. When he does it...my take on that I've seen the kid throw the ball in practice. He can throw it.. just we just need to play better you know. Need to help him with some fundamentals and he needs to throw the ball better. Just relax and believe in yourself and trust it and play. If you'll do that he'll be just fine. Just look at what you're supposed to look at.

Transcribed by me with probably a few wording errors, but it wasn't "won't throw the ball deep".

That is almost a direct statement that CPJ said he was worried about TQM's throwing after Saturday's game. I heard him say he was concerned about the offense, but I didn't hear him say that he was concerned about TQM throwing the ball. If the above post doesn't mean that CPJ specifically said that after Saturday's game then I don't understand what you were saying.

Yep, that’s what I like about a no nonsense coach. He’s not going to say that unless it’s true imo.

Yeah he’s not worried about his arm. He is worried about his reads and seeing onen receivers. Color me a tad concerned on this but it is correctable.

TM is fearless running the ball. He needs to bring that mindset on passing plays also but I think he’s playing tight and pressing on pass plays.
