No need to do that. Like I said earlier, the Federal government doesn't need to shut down the economy again or keep people in their homes. We just need the same rules for everyone: Wear a mask, no large gatherings, no full capacity service indoors (looking at you bars and restaurants)...common sense things that prevent the spread of the virus. What's the point in having one state do that if people from other states are just going to do what they want in another state? There are scientific studies on the drastic difference those steps have on curbing the virus spread.

Of course we can continue to do what we've been doing as the world looks upon us horrified that the country that built a science and economic powerhouse is ignoring it all...for what?

If people are horrified at us, they can just go **** themselves. We are our own country.

Thr Texas Governor said it best - everyone should wear masks and socially distance. Science proves it stops the virus. But there’s a difference between that and passing a federal law. Then you’re talking about police officers having to arrest people and everything else. You’ll have people who resist arrest and then fights start and people get injured and so on and so forth. I think people who don’t wear masks or distance are silly, but I control myself and I don’t have to go near them and I wear a mask. They’re not going to infect me. I don’t understand why some people won’t wear masks, but I don’t think we should be arresting them and throwing them in jail.

Yup, you must be proud that America is the #1 country for Covid 19 infections and deaths! 'Merica!!! Amirite?! (<-- sarcasm)

Cops don't have to arrest people for not wearing masks, but they can force them to wear them or go home. Not everything has to lead to arrest. Your attitude that people can do what they want and it doesn't affect you has proven throughout history that it leads to bigger issues. Maybe not directly, maybe it's someone you know or love. How many Jewish were put in ovens or gassed because they were someone else's problem? How many black people were physically beaten or killed by police for petty issues, or made up issues...but no worries, you didn't know them so it doesn't matter. How many old people get scammed out of their life savings because they trusted someone...no worries though, it's not you.

But as long as you don't get sick that's all that matters, right? SMH.

Were #1 because we’ve tested more than the rest of the world combined.

Pokice should tell people they have to wear a mask or go home. And then what when people refuse? Our books are full of well intentioned laws that never turn out the way we hoped.

"Testing more" means nothing if you don't take into account per capita. And you may also want to walk back your "rest of the world combined" statement...that's absurdly false. Also, the United States reports "test results" as opposed to total people/individuals tested. Let's be honest here, our government has been making a shim sham of the data from the start.

https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-testing-per-capita-countries-ahead-of-us-2020-5

I have ZERO confidence in what our government is reporting. Hell, we have one state (looking at you Florida), one of the worst infected areas in our country, flat out hiding data...in fact, their governor fired the lady in charge of the data because she wasn't willing to manipulate the numbers to make Florida look better. Also, our infections per capita is also among the worst:

https://www.statista.com/chart/21176/covid-19-infection-density-in-countries-most-total-cases/

It's literally a who's who of the countries that handled this epidemic the worst. It may disappoint you that we're only #5 there.

sorry, the last time I looked we had tested more than the rest of the world combined. If that isn’t still the case, I would at least assume that we are close. The point being, we have 5% of the worlds population. Anybody who thinks that we have six times the number of cases and deaths per capita is suffering from how bad the rest of the worlds data is. Take a country like the UK - many people think they have the best healthcare system in the world. Do we really all think that they have almost a 20% death rate? No way. They still have “no tests” for many people who need them.

That there is no direction and they're leaving it up to the states whose residents migrate from city to city, state to state, etc. is utterly mind boggling.

It's called federalism and it's part of what makes the American experiment great. Besides, the federal government's ability to enforce specific public health directives is handcuffed by the 10th Amendment (as it should be). Could lives be saved by ignoring both? Maybe, but at what cost to our national identity and freedoms?

This started out as "flatten the curve." There were 917 Covid 19 related hospitalizations last week according to CDC. Nationwide. That’s an average of about 18 per state, and consistent with what I have heard about the number of patients recently at my local hospitals. No one talks about flatten the curve anymore.
.
A paper on the CDC website from a study in Georgia showed that only 1 in 4 patients hospitalized for Covid 19 needed to be. Clemson reported 23 players with Covid 19, but asymptomatic.

This started out as flatten the curve, but that propaganda didn’t work, so they—whoever “they” are-- have moved on to half-truths. They use the half truths to paint the virus as something that it is not to keep the panic going.

This virus isn't the deadly killer it was first suspected to be. We will always have communicable diseases. Those diseases will contribute to deaths of people with underlying conditions.

So are we all to be permanently forced to wear masks? That is really the question. If they enforce masks, then later drop the requirement, it will prove that the whole thing was overblown--although they will spin it as a great victory.

I continue to ask the question I have asked since March: What is this pan(dem)ic REALLY about?

Round about a February or March there were a couple weeks straight of stories in the media that focused on what they considered to be the most interesting question of it all.

...... It may disappoint you that we're only #5 there.

Why should other countries which have their **** together allow flights or people who have been in the US in the prior two weeks?

Iceland is doing 100% nasal swabs with test results before allowing people to leave the airport. That is a logical requirement for any US person going to another country that has gotten the virus "under control".

This is a horrible trend: Public health officials threatened...

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/a...aving-their-posts/ar-BB15Q3Ip?ocid=spartandhp

From the article:
Ohio’s public health director, Amy Acton, shifted to an advisory role after enduring months of anger against the state’s preventive measures, including armed protesters at her home bearing messages including anti-Semitic and sexist slurs. One Republican lawmaker linked Acton, who is Jewish, to Nazi Germany; another called her a dictator.

Georgia’s public health director said last month that she receives threats daily and now has an armed escort.

Pennsylvania’s secretary of health, who is transgender, has come under fire for the state’s handling of the pandemic, including from a county official who resigned after saying at a recent meeting that he was “tired of listening to a guy dressed up as a woman.”

Not everyone has left willingly. In Colorado’s Rio Grande County, Emily Brown was fired, she says, after advocating a more cautious response to the virus.

“I think I just finally pushed too hard,” she said. “There was resistance to taking steps as quickly as I felt they needed to be taken or move in directions I thought we needed to.”

She had been in her position for six years and valued being part of a close-knit rural community. But during the pandemic, she began getting threatening messages online from people she considered neighbors, including one Facebook post that referenced hanging. She became worried about who she might run into at the grocery store.

Ironic that the EU is mainly opening back up and seeing reductions in cases as they do following science and recommendations primarily from the US.

Circling back to this one - I don't know what data that was, but it is incorrect. Here is what South Carolina states right now:
"There are currently 731 hospital beds occupied by patients who have either tested positive or are under investigation for COVID-19, according to DHEC."
https://www.live5news.com/2020/06/2...8RUAsBA_xzCOljdwyw1pg7FlvKAj_nNxBllu2BBwCwhw4

And I just read North Carolina has about 800 hospitalizations.

Texas is around 3,000.

South Carolina is 1.5% of the population. So I would expect there to be around 35,000 COVID-19 patients in the hospital nationwide right now.

What you said made the case that the shutdown and shelter in place orders worked. People keep forgetting that the outcomes for this virus are trailing...it doesn't happen immediately once you put rules in place. The spikes in infections and hospitalizations we are seeing now are a result of opening back up weeks ago. In two to four more weeks there's a good chance we will either be discussing Shutdown Wave 2, or the more catastrophic F$ck It...Let's Go 100% Herd Immunity Route.

Unfortunately, there were still some states and a LOT of people who still selfishly went about their lives when the shutdowns and shelter in place went into effect. That's the reason we plateaued and didn't decline. Guess what? We never got out of the First Wave...we're still smack dab in it, and the numbers coming in from opening up weeks ago are causing the first wave to rise again.

We chose Door 1 the first time: Shut things down, shelter in place, and hope the curve starts to decline...which it did in the worst infected areas. It cost us economically, and there's no avoiding that toll. However, it also did what some scientists and economist said it would do. That is, it would have a lot of people questioning whether we overreacted.

For those that thought we overreacted, you're in "luck". Every indication is pointing to the United States (and the rest of the World) is about to find out what's behind Door 2: No shutdown, half hearted mitigation attempts, and let a country with over 300 million go about their life as usual during the midst of an infectious epidemic. The Federal government and some states seem fine to let the virus play out without safeguards. We won't have to second guess whether we overreacted the first time, and we won't have to guess the economic and social toll the virus can have if we just ignore it all...we're about to find out first hand.

Let's be clear. There will be no winners in the coming weeks and months.

It's ironic that we aren't listening to our own scientists. The United States has the foremost experts in virology and epidemiology, yet we are placing their expertise behind political stupidity. The United States will get what we deserve.

I agree with almost everything that you said, except for the overreacting part. If people were socially distancing and wearing a facemask, then we wouldn’t need to shut everything down. And not to be too pessimistic, but the high number of people acting foolish makes me think even if our leaders try to shut things back down again, people are going to ignore it.

Its not political - it’s just people choosing to ignore them. Here is S.C. we have a 1000% increase in cases of 20-somethings and younger. Those are not Trump voters. And a lot of Trump voters do it too. Seems to me it cuts across political lines.

About 90% of what Congress does should be "handcuffed by the 10th Amendment." But it's not, and as a result we live in a society governed by administrative bureaucrats.

Go to the CDC website. It's there.

I can tell the people who believe the media. They wear masks. I go to the CDC website, look at the data, and make my own decisions.

It’s wildly wrong. Maybe they’re only counting severe ICU beds or something.
