Denmark shut down really early and pretty harshly. After over a month they let small school children go back to school. That was when the curve wasn’t flat but had gone down significantly. They waited a few more weeks after that before they started letting patrons return to shopping and restaurants. By then the curve was nearly non existent. It was a pretty well executed plan overall.

My company has been trying to stay ahead of this junk and today we had a meeting with the hospital, the local health officials & assorted others. I asked if there were any common threads among the deaths in my county and got the following responses:

A. Well, I see you cited the number of deaths we’ve reported but it’s important to understand the context. For example, we had a series of nursing home deaths where the 1st person to die had a relative that visited a person that traveled to NY and visited a person that had C19 & another person that associated with that person died from C19, a confirmed case. So it’s possible that none of the 5 people died of C19 but based on the linkage we classified them as C19 deaths because it seemed more likely than not. We didn’t want to waste tests so on the basis of safety that’s why we did that.

B. Some others showed up at the hospital in respiratory distress. Again, maybe they didn’t have C19 but rather than doing wasteful tests we classified them as C19 as a matter of public safety. You know, there’s people with COPD and are morbidly obese or have lung cancer or something like that. If we thought they would still be alive or may not have died, And they looked like they had the symptoms we classified some of those as C19 even though we didn’t have definitive proof you seem to be hinting at.

So I asked, well we’ve got less than 2 dozen C19 deaths and you seem to indicate a high percentage are not really confirmed as dying from C19. Is the confirmed percentage 50%, 25% or 10% of the total your citing?

“Well, 1 case the guy that went to NYC & NJ was confirmed. We’re pretty sure the 88 y/o woman was a C19 death too so I guess 10% would be accurate. We don’t have results but we’re confident that’s what it is”

Freaking amazing.

In the end we all agreed:

A. Stay home if you’re sick
B. Stay home if you’re feeble, bad health
C. Don’t sneeze on people
D. Face masks when around large groups of people may afford some protection
E. A clean work space is better than a dirty one
F. Don’t travel to hotspots

The list you all agreed to, is helpful how, to anyone with a IQ over 70 ? If only the dozen or so States that are not doing so well, had this list a month ago---who knew? Ok, sarcasm aside, everyone wants the easy button to push on a very complex problem. The WHO, CDC, and countless Drs. and scientists Worldwide, have struggled to understand this novel virus---and yes, they actually do know a great deal more about it than our resident msg brd docs. We all know a great deal more than they do about our professions,
yet we act like we know more than them about theirs. Hypocrisy much?

I know, It’s not really complicated. Wear a mask, socially distance, use good hygiene. It does not get much more complicated than that.

Unfortunately, I see more people NOT doing that. My work is mandating face coverings, but when I go shopping anecdotally I estimate about 25% masked (most being employees who don't have a choice). I am also seeing tons of cross-family vacations to beaches. Nobody is really following the "common sense" mantra.

Same here in all cases. The only exception is at the grocery store - seems about like 80% wearing masks there. Our local rec sports are starting up again, including the kids track team, which has 250+ kids and about 20 coaches. Yes, all inside a fenced track at the same time. Ay ay ay.

I've seen a bunch of race directors recently (running) for a variety of events asking for help figuring out a solution to have their events. They're being told by city, county, local parks and rec folks that they aren't approving any permits for any activities other than protests. You just can't make this stuff up. My feedback was to call the race a protest and give a $5 discount to anybody who carries a protest sign during the race.

Yes, you need an IQ over 70 to comprehend this. It appears there’s more people BTL than ATL. It’s really not that complicated but you’d think we were trying to splice genes here.

You're right, but the "cross-family vacations" can be safe. The problem is that you have to get the others to sign in blood that they haven't been in close contact with anyone but your family. I've posted several COVID-19 vids by Aaron Carroll here. His family has friends - colleagues at IU Med School - who come over for limited visits. They keep safe distance and all of them have pledged to visit no-one else. This is safe enough.

Problem = getting that kind of commitment from others, especially family members. My son has visited his brother-in-law's family down at St. Simon's and they have all been careful to limit contact. I hope the b-i-l is righteous on this. As you say, most people aren't and we'll all pay for that.

I think Lindsey is pretty much right here, though he tends to avoid foreign policy and its effects and way overestimates the "boom" of the 80s and 90s.

But in all seriousness, as an avid, quasi-competitive race runner, I am having withdrawals. Ran a race March 7, everything since then has been postponed or canceled. The Peachtree Road Race has been moved to Thanksgiving Day. What are the chances it gets postponed again? They haven't bothered to post a start time yet, so the ATC probably doesn't expect to run it. If it isn't postponed, who wants to run a point to point race in cold weather without transportation back to the starting line? The long walk back to Marta is fine in the summer, but hot, sweaty run clothes become cold and wet after a race in late November. Maybe they start the race later in the day?
Anyway, get outside, stay active, if you don't run like I do, at least take a walk and get some sunshine. I read one study that shows a very high correlation between normal vitamin D levels and staying asymptomatic if infected at any age.

We had a trail race here a couple weeks ago with about 100 runners. They required masks at the start, social distancing, and started in waves of about 5 runners at a time a minute apart. Everybody followed instructions and behaved - I was impressed. No award ceremony, etc. went off without a hitch.

When folks talk about our federal government as a solution to anything, I ask "What does the Federal Government do well?" Or better than anyone else?

Other than sending out checks, I have yet to get a response that resonates.

Agreed. I got into the Peachtree for the first time in 15 years and was actually getting into pretty decent shape until March. The the postponement til Thanksgiving and sore knees stopped that. I think Thanksgiving is likely a no go too.

I have put on almost 10 pounds since the gym closed and getting lazy on running. (Drinking more beer since the shut down did not help either)

Meanwhile, if you look at the Johns Hopkins-type dashboards, Brazil has packed up their bag and gone home. They have totally removed their data from the system. They were officially moving into second place worldwide in deaths and decided to just turn the lights off and leave the room I guess. They think they can hide but they can't.

I've read that from other sources too. Worldometers still reports a daily count for them. If accurate , they appear to be world leader for daily new cases.
