CGC reminds him of Butch Jones

I mean, the man just said in writing on the AJC in that article that if Paul Johnson had recruited better, he would have won FEWER games. It takes a major idiot to put stuff like that in writing.

I think you misread what he wrote:

"Had Johnson run the same offense as everyone else and recruited a couple of notches better, would he have won more? My feeling was that he’d have won less."

I agree with Bradley here.

I do, too. Remember that year when CPJ tried that shotgun formation and diamond offense with Vad Lee at quarterback? It didn’t work very well...

They initially did, but like most athletes, became quickly disillusioned when hype didn't translate to wins. In 2015 & 16, there was a LOT of buzz that Tennessee was ready to turn the corner. Tennessee was ranked when we played them to open the season. As their season fell apart, you started seeing the locker room lose faith in him. Butch was also a lights out recruiter. He had two top 5 classes and the other two were ranked 15th.

There are a LOT of similarities between Butch and CGC as far as hype and buzz go. Hopefully, CGC proves to be as good a recruiter as Butch was, but I think he will be. Time will tell on the coaching, but I believe CGC will prove far superior in that respect as well.

I can see surface-level similarities, but I can just as easily compare CGC to Dabo or Dan Mullen, as far as that goes. Hype and branding is the new norm.
I share your optimism that we got a good one, though.

I read the article and said "So what", there were numerous threads on this very topic over the GT boards.

Coach Collins gets the importance of recruiting... what hasn't been set is his ability to coach the X's and O's.

I remember when they were calling Dabo, a clown, for his recruiting antics...those same people are calling Clemson a dynasty.

You need to have both parts of a great salesperson and a great tactician if you want to be a legend. Far too often a coach only has one.

Nobody knows how Collins will do? Tech supporters hope for the best and support the man. Tech haters point out the obvious, he might turn out to be a dud and they point out why they think he most likely will. Mark Bradley should have been fired years ago. No talent for what he is supposed to be a professional at.

Go Jackets!
you know what drives people nuts about Bradley? The same as what drives people nuts about any columnist. We expect them to have an opinion and to state it forcefully. Just as long as we agree with it. If somebody didn't want him fired he should be fired for not doing his job.

We can **** on Butch Jones, and he deserves its for the dumb **** he said and did, but if we are being honest, most Tech fans are predicting and would be satisfied with his overall record not including the final partial season.

Eh. That was a tweak. I wouldn't say we were running the same offense as everyone else. And as bad as Vad supposedly was, we had an average season, by our standards and coulda woulda shoulda beaten uga.

We've got a turnover cruiser. We're apparently not above gimmicks ourselves.

Yeah, but our gimmicks are GOOD

I agree with @smokey_wasp, the problem with Butch Jones was that no one was buying what he was selling. He would lose games and talk about how it didn't matter because his players were the "Champions of Life." The guy was memed as a total weeny. Jones was similarly a marketer, but he was out of touch with young people and didn't have nearly the "cool" factor that Collins has effectively marketed himself and the football program with. CGC and his staff have been surprised by how much the team has bought into their mission and culture. That's paramount for a good team and Jones didn't have it.

Like a broken record. Write something contrarian to seem like the smart guy in the room... which is also the reason he claims to have started to like Paul Johnson in the end. He makes the comparison to Butch Jones but gives enough outs so that if CGC doesn't turn out to be like Butch Jones, he didn't predict it. Just a stupid article in general IMO... a whole lot of words with no actual conviction.
Exactly!

Offensive yards - 655 vs. 369 - and we still managed to find a way to lose : (

655 yards has to be a record for most Tech yards in a loss. And I would guess it may be up there with the BCS record. Just a bizarre game of mistake after mistake after mistake in the 4th by the offense, defense, and special teams. Still sad about that one.
I remember watching that **** in a bar in Aruba. It was our first night there and I was sitting next to a family of UT fans. I went from drunk, loud and crazy to hungover and embarrassed in a matter of 15 minutes....
That one is up there with the 2013 UGA game in recent let downs for me.

I can't beat up on MB for this article. I think for the most part he split the good and bad down the middle. He certainly nailed PJ with his constant "smirk" when asked about recruiting. From my standpoint PJ's inability to get along with the press & radio folks always worked against him, he really never tried to shmooze them. Just this morning Steak on 68O pointed out that next Tuesday they were going to have their show at the Waffle House with GC and some of the other coaches. So easy to make yourself available and make points.

In the article author says it took him a while to realize that cpj was just right for gt. Imo, i think 2015 really was convinced cpj was just right.

In support of his narrative he quotes gt athletic directors who say gt is half serious football program.

These ad s went 200,000,000 in debt building and went super cheap on coaching staff recruiting support.
Why the ad s didnt go super extra $$ in recruiting support $$$ and assistant coaching pool $$ is bizzaro.

I would say it's a lot easier to fundraise for facilities (your name here practice facility) vs assistant coaching positions. I doubt you could set it up as an endowment to put your name on. But might be something interesting to try. In all honesty, I'd prefer that money go to endow scholarships vs coaching positions.

To the original premise, the biggest difference between CGC and Butch Jones is previous jobs. CGC was a pretty wildly successful assistant coach/coordinator at high levels of P5. Butch had a 2 years at West Virginia as a WR coach.

Butch was all hat and no cattle. I look at how CGC is perceived by his previous guys. He's genuine in his care for his guys. I don't think Butch gave a hoot unless you could perform. Which led to a lot of locker room cancer.

Read this article yesterday. I like how he said our recruiting ceiling was in 2007, a Chan Gailey led team that resulted in multiple NFL draftees who had great careers (Which we all knew already)

What he failed to mention in his story is how those guys were snapped up by none other than Geoff Collins. Mark Bradley can go **** himself as far as I'm concerned.

I am not a big fan of Bradley, but give the guy a break. He has to write a column every week and GT is not his favorite team. Also, the AJC wants clicks. You don't get clicks by saying everything is fine, go read a book.

CGC coached under O'Leary, Saban, Mullen, and Jim McElwain.

O'Leary and Saban are/were two of the most demanding coaches in the business. Mullen has proven to run a very strong program at both of his stops. CGC learned under some of the best, and coached in one of the most demanding conferences. CGC learned at the highest level and under some of the best coaches in this business. Those coaches don't cut corners, and they demanded a high level.

Jones apprenticed under Rich Rodriquez at WVU. IMO, it's not even a relevant comparison. CGC's resume is basically the equivalent of going to undergrad at GT, moving on to Harvard for grad school, then working at fortune 100 company. Jones did not have the pedigree CGC does.

Not saying CGC is going to turn us into Clemson or Bama, but CGC isn't going to cut corners and do things that will hurt our program. CGC and GT will be just fine.

I typically despise MB, but he's not wrong in this article. The only part I'm partly in disagreement with is this:

" Later results showed a marked decline, a sign the rest of the ACC had begun to catch on,"

I think it had more to do with attrition and injury than anybody catching on, but opposing defenders gained experience and DC's had made adjustments that we had difficulty countering, but that was mainly due to lack of the right players due to attrition and injury. Some key recruiting near misses hurt, too. With the personnel we had the last 4 years, I don't think CPJ had his full bag of tricks to work with. We became pretty predictable as a result.
How is that the rest of the acc catching on then? I honestly think it was more a really of having a running at QB for the past two years.
