We'd throw more than 10 times a game with CJ on the roster, until opposing defenses committed hard to double-covering him and adding safety help. Then we would run for about 400 ypg

Unless we somehow recruited and coached up QBs to actually pass and OL to actually pass block it wouldn't happen. Teams would force us to throw and we'd still be bad at it even with Johnson. But the point is moot. In a good year our top WR catches about 3 a game. That isn't attracting high level WRs.

He doesn’t allow them to inferact with the current players or be involved with the team.

yep - we are obviously an option-running team first, passing-second team to anyone paying any attention. Learning how to block is nice but not NFL prep. Nor is running nothing but post routes, which is the only play our WRs get to run. That and the Sideline Bomb. No quick-outs, no crossing patterns. Very vanilla.

Well I dunno. I guess it depends on how you define 'high level'. One definition might be do they make the NFL. We have a long history over the last 10-12 years of putting almost every single multi-year WR starter into the NFL. We just don't play many (essentially we've been playing no more than 2 recently), so the dataset is smaller than teams who play 4-5 WRs and rotated some of them.

Q: If you were a high-school kid coming out, do you think Georgia Tech is the place you’d end up again?

A: Right now, they don’t really throw the ball. So if you’re trying to make plays in the receiving game, 10 throws a game, that’s not going to really (do it). Unless they’re throwing all 10 to you, like they did “Bay Bay” (former All-American receiver Demaryius Thomas).

I'd take that answer as a "NO".

And this would surprise you, why?

CJ left for the NFL when CPJ came in with his run heavy offense. That tells you a lot, no need to speculate.
It leads us to speculate on a Tech man's simple arithmatic skills: 2006 from 2008 = Johnson gone two years by the time Johnson was hired.

I just looked up CJ's stats at Tech. He averaged 4.7 receptions per game and 77 ypg. I believe he could have done pretty much the same (maybe better in ypg) at GT under CPJ. If #21 is on the field and we throw it just 10 times per game, it's a safe assumption to think he's getting 100% (or pretty close) of the balls thrown to him. If we can complete at just 47% (which has admittedly and sadly been a tall task for us due to a host of reasons) there's your 4.7 catches per game. I think CJ's statement underscores the difficulty in recruiting the elite receivers...the perception of Paul's offense can cloud one's judgement...even a guy as intelligent as Calvin was/is.

As i have pointed out and CJ said we dont pass much.

IMO - last year we threw it plenty - We do throw = if at start of year u have 50% completion rate and end 25% rate, your average is 37%. Ofour last 9 completions 4 were to the other team. On stat i saw on Brad s was that most of his throw 2 s were not catchable. Ending the year being totally deficient in passing means ain't going to attract quality wide receivers.

If we were a conventional pro passing team in the sea of run option teams and we recruited a stud qb, we could get stud WR .

But we are what we are - a run option team who needs to " Complete" some key passes to let coach call the whole play book.

As said above in other posts- we come back with a warrior at qb who knows he needs to get way better at passing. Also his backup has had an extra year studying the play book and getting snaps. As cheese has said having experienced and talented skill players is the invisible yeast that makes the offense hum. Also I expect our WR s to take a step at being more physical at the high point.

If we had a better defense in 17 (Mia, Duke, Va) and hit a few passes , we would have had 2 more wins and gone bowling. People would be talking about our potential to break out in the coastal instead of will we be the best of the worst in acc. Let's be positive that the ol will perform and be prepared for a very fun 18!!

I will take it one step further. If we had a kicker, we would have beat Tennessee, Miami, and Virginia. That's 8-3. Defense (and offense) contributed to the problem, but if you go back and look at the games, we had lots of terrible field position from short kicks, we missed kicks, etc. This is not meant to insult our kickers - both battled injuries (and nerves), but the reality is there.

The new rule where you can take a fair catch on a kickoff should help us if teams are smart. If you catch a ball anywhere between the end zone and the 10, I think you're insane to not take a free trip to the 25. No risk of a turnover, no nothing.
