I guess it depends on how you define "one and done" teams. Personally, I don't consider teams that play with a mix of freshman to seniors, with maybe a single one-and-done player to be a "one and done" team. I believe that was generally the makeup of Mizzouri, Bama, LSU, and NC St. For example, yes, Arizona started and relied heavily on Deandre Ayton, but they also started two seniors, a junior, and a sophomore. Are they considered a "one and done" team? If so, I bet we would find that something like 12 of the lat 15 NCAA champions were "one and done" teams.

Now, of the teams that usually start multiple one-and-dones, the main three over the last few years have been Duke, Kansas, and UK. All are still in it this year and have had more than their fair share of success over the last decade. UNC and Arizona might be next on the list in terms of percentage of one and dones. Both are out this year, but it has certainly worked out well for UNC the last few years.

Bottom line is that there is certainly no single way to win the title, but getting multiple one and dones has been a strategy that has seemed to lead to a disproportionate amount of success.

Personally, I would love Tech to get old and stay old, with a rotating string of one/two and done type players. After all, the last time we actually won a tourney game was the single year with Favors.

I just want us to build a real, competitive roster. I don't care about get old/stay old. Just put a competitive roster out there.

Don't restrict yourself by eschewing going after perceived 1-and-done guys in the guise of, "Bwah, I just wanna lose 'til all our guys are juniors and seniors and have it all figured out."

There's more than one path to success but every path to success requires high-level talent. If we have to take a 1-and-done guy (*gasp* or 2?) to do it, so freaking be it.

An interesting article to wade through with stats on one and dones. Some schools clearly have a lot less of them than you'd think. Looking through it, I'm not 100% certain one and dones = championships. I do find it interesting the huge increase in Freshmen leaving school the past 2 years.

But that's the thing. No one is saying 1-and-done = championship. I'm saying high talent level = championships and, if you have to grab a 1-and-done kid to achieve a high-talent roster, so be it.

I agree with you. I think some people seem to believe it’s either “One and done” or “Get Old, Stay Old” as far as roster makeup goes. Outside of pretty much Kentucky, Duke, and Kansas that’s not really the case.

I don't argue with your point overall but will quibble with a couple of details? Who is the one and done on NCSU this year - Beverly? Or are you referring to Smith from last year? Also, UNC has only had one 1 and done player in 5 years or more - Tony Bradley who surprised almost everyone by getting a late first round selection. He was supposed to be a 3 year type of player and would have made a big difference for UNC in games like yesterday.

Yeah, I only brought up NCST in response to the poster before me who cited them as an example of a team with a one and done that was out already. I don't know enough about their roster to know if they have a single one and done, but know I would not consider them a "one and done" team regardless.

I totally agree with this. My thought process on saying that "I want to get old and stay old with a rotating string of one/two and done type players" is in large part because I just don't think we are capable of recruiting 2/3 one and dones per year. If we can, I will take them all. The people who act all high and mighty about how one and dones are ruining college basketball and they are glad their team doesn't have any are only the teams that can't seem to recruit one and dones. Any coach for any team in the country that can land a top 10 player would jump at the chance to do so. If you could tell me we could get 2-3 top ten players per year, fine with me. Bring 'em all. Would love to getting back to seeing some Tech grads playing in the NBA and continuing to build our brand.

FTFY. People saying we shouldn't go after 5 stars must have really enjoyed the last decade of basketball at GT.

If high talent=highly ranked recruiting classes, someone recently posted a study of top recruiting classes and surprisingly there wasn't a high correlation between those high ranked classes and postseason success.

They have a lot of talent or Bennett is a scary good coach.
Virginia has maybe 1 NBA player on its active roster this year? Imo - De'Andre Hunter. And good chance he's undersized at 6'7" to play the 3, unless he really develops his jumper.

ETA: Interesting summary here, published March 1:
The site NBADraft.net does not project a single player from Virginia’s roster to be selected in the 2018 or 2019 drafts. According to the 247Sports composite rankings, the Wahoos’ past four recruiting classes have ranked 32nd, 62nd, seventh, and 98th. And yet Virginia has put together perhaps its most impressive regular season of the Bennett era, sitting 26–2 and 15–1 in the ACC, ranking first in both polls, the RPI, and the KenPom rankings. They beat North Carolina and Clemson at home and defeated Duke at Cameron, and with two games remaining, they lead the ACC by three and a half games.
When Bennett looked across the country (and beyond) for his earliest recruiting classes, he kept an eye open for the skills that college coaches everywhere covet. He wanted shooters and bangers, athletes and ball handlers. He didn’t contend for the services of one-and-done players, but he wasn’t morally opposed to them, either. He did, however, have one unique requirement, something he’d learned from his father when watching him rebuild programs at three different schools.

“I always think to myself about a player, ‘Can I lose with you?’” says Bennett. “Losing is a truth serum. That’s when you really learn about people. If we can lose together, and we can still survive — to me, that’s the foundational piece.”

ETA2: Talent is probably still better than many teams e.g., Kyle Guy was a McD's player. But Virginia is overachieving in large part due to Bennett, save for some of the tourney performances.

Report: Purdue engineers asked to design NCAA-approved brace for Isaac Haas
Purdue's sports medicine program has reached out to a group of mechanical engineers on campus, according to the Lafayette Journal & Courier, to see if they can design an NCAA-approved brace that would at least open the door for 7-foot-2 center Isaac Haas to be able to return to the court this season.

Purdue coach Matt Painter has been consistently clear that he doesn't expect Haas to be healthy enough to play in the Boilermakers' upcoming games regardless of the brace he wears on his recently fractured elbow, but it appears engineers will take a stab at rebuilding him anyway. They might have the technology.
