Attrition and Scholarship Limits

I don't know what happens, but one thing I do know is that if Wesley Wells doesn't get a scholarship, something's wrong.

There was an article in the ajc on the kickers. Wells and King (and Gandis) are in an open competition for the spot. King says he is finally healthy. Honestly, as long as King is on scholly, Wells probably wont get one. Can't see us having 2 scholarship kickers with the serious roster needs. CPJ wouldn't do that, either.

What if Wells wins the job? Any other position on the team would get the scholly.

“Medical” someone’s fanny!

Is this how this post works?
That’s a good example of how medicals should work. You had a scholarship player that was injured, he moves to medical. The healthy guy gets the scholarship. If the hurt guy gets better, he should then get his scholarship back. Maybe he never comes back?

I haven’t said this but the real reason we don’t have medicals is $$$. We’re barely able to pay for what we got now.

Yeah. Kickers are different. Other players can be moved around to find some place to contribute. Kickers are specialists, so if you carry 2, that's a dead scholarship and essentially voluntary probation. Both guys have 3 years of eligibility remaining, as well. I dont want to speculate on individual players, but this is an example of how its not so simple as some want to believe.

If I'm not mistaken, once you "go medical," you're gone from any further competition, which is probably why King is still on regular status. It is NOT like going on the DL for MLB, getting healthy, then coming back to play.

"Medicals" keep their ride, but it essentially become a work scholly & no longer counts against the 85. They fill in with "film" breakdown, meet&greets, recruiting, checking names off at the Letterwinners Lounge at FB games or wherever else needed by the GTAA, et al.

I am pretty sure that a medical scholarship is only available to a player who have what the doctors define as a career ending injury. Once you are placed on a medical scholarship, you can't play at that school again. There are a few SAs who were placed on medical at one school, transferred, and were then cleared by the doctors at the new school to play. Once placed on medical, the player will never play for that school again.

It isn't like the injured reserve list in the NFL. The school is saying that the player's injury or health are too bad to ever play the sport again. Think about the reasons GT players were put on medical scholarships; Traumatic brain injury, serious heart issues, etc. The doctors have basically said that the players risk death if they play football.

@RonJohn I looked up the NCAA rule and unless I don’t understand it correctly you can be placed on medical and at that point you stop counting as a scholarship athlete for roster management purposes. If you’re cleared to play again you count against the roster scholarships again regardless of whether or not you’re still at the school.

The abuse these guys subject their body to is amazing. Tyler Cooksey been wearing head set for a year during multiple surgeries. Hasn't fully contributed but seems well now and want to play.
Now the ethical dilemma of playing time.

I think cgc s commitment to ATL liberal substitutes and sets for them is a good solution that will work well as we recruit better and better players.

I guess you forgot how critical the kicking position is. If your starting Kicker isn’t on Scolly, something is definitely wrong with your priorities. Also, what does it say about your whole walk on program? You tell kids bust your ***, make the field and win a scholly and then they see a starting player pay his own way. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Except its super common everywhere and even at gt we had walkons start without schollies for 1-3 years before getting one. Is it fair? Probably not. But its the way kickers are viewed. It just comes with the territory with those positions

A reason why they are rarely drafted.
A reason why like almost none in the nfl HOF. or none.

Despite their importance as you mention its all through football not just ncaa walkons.

Imo i am good with a starting kicker not getting a ship until after year 2. After year 3 is probably not right.

I’d say it’s between the coaches and the kid and doesn’t say anything else about anything.

Yep......just think if we had a kicker that would have put the KO past the endzone consistently against USF.

It isn't that simple, either, because you have also to consider the very important principle that in order to inspire effort and achievement, you have to reward it. And besides, it's just the right thing to do. If we have too many kickers on scholarship, that's a price we should pay because following those principles are more important, both in terms of doing the right thing and how doing the right thing helps the team. No, I agree that it isn't that simple. If we have a kicker on scholarship who is riding the bench, that should never preclude the one who is starting from having a scholarship. Hypothetically, that absurd situation could continue on the team for three more years. Imagine how that might play out. That situation is all wrong. A scholarship kicker riding the bench is no more a burden to the team as a scholarship player riding the bench in any other area of the team.

I agree the situation is a complicated one at this point. If King wins the job, I understand how the situation might be seen differently. But if Wells wins it, he should be awarded a scholarship without question.
