And these are one year deals/contracts, aren't they?
What difference does that make? The contracts are still one-sided and without negotiation from the player.

The player got the Heisman as a true freshman and wants to renegotiate for more guaranteed years? The school will politely tell them to go eff themselves.

The coaches have the ability to renegotiate for more years, why can't the players?

The current players had no representation nor bargaining power in crafting these contracts. I would argue that these contracts are examples of unconscientious dealings. The players have ZERO bargaining power and are given a take it or leave it contract (which is exactly what happens without unions that have bargaining power).
I had the same thing with my ROTC contract/scholly and I could have been conscripted if I defaulted and I'm not complaining.

A scholarship is a contract technically, but it is more than that. It is an award, albeit with minimal conditions attached, it is not an employment contract. No parallel exists with coaches' employment contracts.

It was actually a response to another poster that appeared to have alluded to the kids having signed a four year deal. I agree that the scholarships are one sided. I signed one of those deals in the 70's. I'm all for the kids.

An award? With conditions attached? Sounds like an employment contract that changed the word employment to award in order to exploit a loophole to me.

Your employer called and is changing your employment contract to an award with minimal conditions attached.

RamblinCharger: Unions are for the lazy and those who do not want to work. Those who are responsible and do a good job do not need unions. I agree, the original unionship was good, but it deterioated into a political scheme where the unions are used to elect Democratic (Socialist) politicians. They take the union dues to help the socialists get elected.

Don't be an ***, it is an award.

A scholarship is an award of financial aid for a student to further his or her education. Scholarships are awarded based upon various criteria, which usually reflect the values and purposes of the donor or founder of the award. Scholarship money is not required to be repaid.[1]

The kids are getting all the benefits, they do not have to play football, and they do not have to attend college. However, if they desire to do so, they can get a completely free ride to play a game they love to play anyway. There is no real work involved, because they have loved the game from their early years and love to play the game. Their desires are being granted by the college in return for a free ride. If they do not want to play the game, then quit the game and the college. If you still want to go to college, pay your own way.

If you want to play the game and do not want the degree, then find another way to play without going to college. Maybe these so-called unions can get the pro football teams to have minor leagues like baseball. The players and coaches are exploiting the colleges, fans, and boosters to pay more and more money for their fun and degrees. If these players succeed, I personally hope college football fails entirely. Then all these players will be out on the streets trying to find a job and a way to pay for their education if they want one.

The non-athletic students would love to have the advantage of the student-atheletes. The professors and teachers would love to have the salaries of the coaches. Of course, this would also mean that the other sports besides football and basketball would also go down the drain. So, many other athletes (both men and women) would also not get college educations for their sports. The football players are now mimicking the CEOs of the various companies, "It is called Greed, pure and simple:".

Cheese you're spot on, it's an award. I'm currently in college. I go to UAH, which is considered better academically than auburn or bama by some, but still a D2 school, but anyway, I digress. I pay around 5 thousand a semester, well my parents do thank goodness, and I know tech is more expensive than that (I'm going to talk about these numbers very conservatively) so lets say $6k a semester for an in state student. That's around 60 thousand dollars they're receiving over 4 just for housing not including books. Then, on top of that they get dining dollars, and they probably get the base amount every month, which is $225-250 every month for probably 9 months. These "dollars" can be used around many campuses to buy a number of things not exclusively food. So that is another $6-8k just so they can eat. Then, they get clothing, shoes, and other team merchandise to wear around or work out in. That is probably a $3k value during their career at least. Last but not least they get free housing. Athletes usually get the nicest dorms or some of the nicest dorms on campus, which are roughly a $5k value per year for 9 months, so another $20k for 4 years. So at most schools a student athlete receiving a full scholarship receives $90-100k worth of goods, that I and my parents and many other students around the country are paying for.

I for one also think they should receive a stipend for gas/spending money at or around $250-300 a month, because they most likely can not work, but that is a different subject. Their scholarships and benefits are most definitely an award. They have worked hard and have talent that I do not have, but if I had the talent and had spent the time playing ball in high school past freshman year I would love the opportunity that many of them have.

There is no reason for these guys at NW, (who btw are receiving a fantastic education that costs more than the average amount to go to school there), should be complaining about what they get or threatening to start a union, it's absurd.

Wait... What? The kids get NO benefits. That is that exact point of APU...

What about the players cut against their will through injury? Many cannot afford college due to the cost. Do you think that they should not be able to graduate because they no longer can afford it?
If these players succeed, I personally hope college football fails entirely.
How very... republican of you. Hope for others to fail even when they succeed because FREEDUMB!!!
Of course, this would also mean that the other sports besides football and basketball would also go down the drain.
Got it... you are a republican and think that any change will bring fire and brimstone.

I'm pretty sure that the college players are not the ones standing on a large pile of money...

Well, there is indeed a lot of $ involved in college sports. But to assume the school is getting "rich" off the athletes is somewhat in error. (Coaches, perhaps)

But all this money is going to facility upgrades, bigger stadiums, supporting sports that often time are only there due to gov't mandates and things like that.

Very seriously doubt that a vast, vast majority of the schools have a ton of money sitting around to give to the athletes beyond ships.

If so, we would not need vehicles such as A-T, or the Tech Fund, and we are not unique in this regard

This doesn't happen. The schools have the ability to grant medical scholarships that allow kids to stay on scholarship and never play another down of practice again.

They also stop counting against the 85 limit which has gotten certain programs a lot of negative scrutiny for putting guys on this status just to free up ships for new recruits. "Bubba hasn't cracked the two-deep after a year, see if he has a hang nail and we'll get him a med scholly."

Schools can grant medical scholarships, but they're not required to. They're also not required to cover medical bills for injuries sustained playing sports.

DTGT - as has been pointed out the kid can be kept on scholly... that's up to the school's AA to decide if they are willing to do the right thing or not. But that's been discussed in other threads here and other blogs.

But they do because they have the money and don't want the fall out of being known as a school that cuts it's dead weight.

Unbelievable that ANYONE thinks going down this foxhole will be a good thing...it will NOT. I have worked in union plants; they are a cancer..not only do they turn management and workers into enemies, but they turn workers and workers into enemies, and they lead to NO COMMON SENSE across the work site....

Unions are for union bosses and more union dues, not their members. I still remember the shop steward giving me the one grievance I ever received, and he said, and I quote, "you are right, you are doing the right thing, but I have to do this because she wants a grievance, and if a member wants a grievance, we file a grievance". Wow, just wow....again, NO common sense. I actually saw a grievance turned in one time because "he looked at me funny."

This thread has taken a bad turn toward people talking out of their *** about unions.
